Mooresville, NC (13 April 2011)— Even for a company with the record of success that Riley Technologies has established, the Porsche 250 GRAND-AM at Barber Motorsports Park was a particularly big highlight.

After scoring a 1-2 finish in both the Daytona Prototype and GT classes in round two at Homestead Miami Speedway, Riley Technologies customers were looking to build on that momentum at Barber Motorsports Park.

For the third consecutive race, the No. 01 BMW-powered Riley of Memo Rojas and Scott Pruett won the overall event for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. With the team kicking off the season with a victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the duo have launched an impressive campaign for their championship defense, having scored the Rolex Series Team and Driver titles in 2010.

Riley Technologies products also enjoyed success in the GT Class at Barber Motorsports Park, as the No. 94 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 of Paul Dalla Lana and Bill Auberlen scored the GT Class victory for the second consecutive race. The two consecutive wins have powered the Turner Motorsport group forward in the driver championship standings, as the duo are now tied for the championship lead.

Adding to the trophy count for Riley Technologies products at Barber was the No. 70 SpeedSource Engineering Mazda RX-8 of Sylvain Tremblay and Jonathan Bomarito, which crossed the finish line third in GT.

In a race that saw seven lead changes, the Riley Technologies Daytona Prototypes were a dominant force, scoring the top eight positions in the running order. The GRAND-AM Rolex Series championship standings also reflect that on-track strength, with the top nine drivers all running Riley equipment.

“Congratulations to the Ganassi organization on another perfect weekend and to getting the season off to the ideal start with three wins in a row,” said Riley Technologies VP Bill Riley. “To have our Riley teams finish first through eighth at Barber brings a lot of pride to our entire organization. And to have two customers finish on the GT Class podium, one with a BMW and one with a Mazda RX-8, I think also says a lot about that platform. It all comes down to the team’s hard work and to executing on race day, and we work very hard to give them everything they need to succeed. We are already looking forward to VIR.”

Brian Frisselle Takes Tenth at Barber Motorsports Park

Birmingham, AL-(10 April 2011) After starting from fifth on the grid with the No. 77 Office Depot Ford-Dallara and running in position for podium, Brian Frisselle and co-driver Henri Richard finished the Barber 250 in tenth position as the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series staged round three of the 2011 championship.

Frisselle opened the race from behind the wheel, looking to go easy on the tires and make the most of a possible long green flag run. That paid a short term dividend as the Office Depot car was up to third before turning the machine over to co-driver Richard on the 13th lap. Making his first visit to the complex 2.3-mile circuit, the leader in the rookie standings rejoined the pack in 19th, moving back to eventually have the machine once again in podium position. But the long green flag run and a stop for a driver change and new tires eventually saw the car down two laps to the leaders.

Frisselle, who moved easily to the front of the Homestead race, had been hoping to do so once again but despite a pair of yellow flags, the luck didn’t play out and the team wasn’t able to regain the laps to the leader. Despite the potential and speed the car showed, the team emerged from the race with a 10th place finish.

“The 90 and 99 had an incredible pace early on, but we were just trying to be conservative and smart with our race pace. Henri didn’t have many laps around this track, so he had to learn a lot this weekend, with the lack of track time not helping at all,” said Frisselle. “It is a very technical track, so it can be a challenge. We had a good strategy once again, but the way the yellows fell we just weren’t able to get that second lap back. It was frustrating because even though our car wasn’t as strong as it was at Homestead, it was still capable of a podium, no question. I think VIR is going to be a much better place for us.”

Frisselle returns to Rolex Sports Car Series competition May 13-14 for the Bosch Engineering 250 at Virginia International Raceway with the green flag set to wave at 3:00 PM (ET). Coverage of the event will broadcast May 14 at 5:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Strong run with new sponsor nets 4th at the finish

10 April 2011- After taking a strong fourth place finish in AIM Autosport’s first race of the 2011 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season, Burt Frisselle was looking to go even better in round three. With a new sponsor joining the effort–GAMMA88–and a solid start to 2011, Frisselle and co-driver Mark Wilkins were hungry for even more at Barber Motorsports Park.

Wilkins started from sixth on the grid, and was up to second by lap 15. After an extended run in the lead pack, Wilkins turned the car over to Frisselle.

Working his way up after running as low as ninth, Frisselle moved to take the lead on lap 72. But that view was soon spoiled as a fraught battle with the eventual race winning No. 01 machine saw unfortunate contact with a GT car, sending Frisselle back to the pits to address a cut tire. Despite the loss of the lead and track position, Frisselle made the most of the new tires to race back up to fourth at the finish.

While the team had been hoping to convert the run up front into a spray of champagne, the fourth place finish still marked another solid result as AIM continues to adapt to the new Continental Tire, having missed out on the data gathering at the Rolex 24.

“At the end of the day it cost us one spot,” said Frisselle about the late-race tangle. “It was a good run, a good good race, and we’re getting there. We really had a podium car today. It was typical GRAND-AM racing – it’s chaos out there and in the mix of a GT battle there was a DP battle we clipped the 59 and unfortunately it took our tire down.

“We were fighting for the front, they were fighting for the front and that’s life. The guys did a great job – we recovered really well and we drove back up to fourth place and in two more laps I think we would have had the Starworks car so we just have to dig and at VIR, we expect to be on the podium.”

Those expectations are fueled by past performance, with the No. 61 having finished second at the event last season.

Matt Bell Scores Best Result of the Year at Barber Motorsports Park

Matt Bell Scores Best Result of the Year at Barber Motorsports Park

(9 April 2011) – Matt Bell returned to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition in Round 3 at Barber Motorsports Park as he and Stevenson Motorsports co-driver Jon Edwards scored their best result of the young season with the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R. The duo placed fifth among a stout GS field after a heated battle through the 2.5-hour event.

The weekend started out strong for Bell as he consistently ran in the top-10 in Thursday’s practice sessions. Ever the strong qualifier, Friday’s qualifying session saw Bell lay down the second quickest lap time to start the two and a half hour race from the outside pole.

Looking to be mindful of tire wear and not using the car up before Edwards took the controls, Bell drove a smart opening stint and stayed glued to the bumper of the No. 15 Mustang while conserving tires in a race where tire wear is key. Even while driving with conservation in mind, Bell remained on pace as the top-three cars developed a substantial gap on the rest of the field.

“The tires fall off very fast,” said Bell. “So the team made a few changes to make it a bit easier for us which helped, but toward the end of the stint I was still in emergency sideways mode.”

That sidewise mode was most apparent as he was knocked into what should have been a full spin by the No. 61 machine in a fight at the front. But Bell put his fast hands and natural talent to quick use as he kept the car from going off-track and returned to keep fighting. Bell pitted from third place to hand the No. 9 Camaro over to Edwards.

The Stevenson Motorsports machine dropped to 21st position following the pit-stop but Edwards made quick work of moving forward and slipped into the top-10. Edwards battled throughout the final stages of the race to finish sixth, the best finish of the year for the No. 9 entry.

“The car was really good,” offered Bell. “We managed to keep the tires under us and finish toward the front to grab some championship points. Hopefully we can continue to bring home some more solid results in the next few rounds. We were on the podium with the Camaro at VIR last year and it would be great to do that again. The Stevenson guys have worked so hard this weekend and it’s good to get some momentum with a finish like this. We’ll look to be even better at VIR.”

Bell returns to racing action at Virginia International Raceway May 13-14 for the Bosch Engineering 200 at VIR. The Barber 200 will air April 16 at 2:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Barber Breakthrough for Bell

Barber Breakthrough for Bell

Podium in just his third pro start

(9 April 2011) – Tim Bell scored his first-ever GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge podium result on Saturday as the young Californian and his Doran Racing teammate BJ Zacharias finished second in the Barber 200 with the No. 14 Office Depot BMW 128i at Barber Motorsports Park.

As a rookie in GRAND-AM, Bell has quickly got up to speed learning the ins and outs of professional racecar driving, and Saturday’s accomplishment was another notch in his rapidly expanding experience base. Despite enduring a race weekend that didn’t get off to a quick start, Bell’s third-ever pro-race start had a nearly ideal ending as he and co-driver BJ Zacharias stood on the podium and relished the traditional champagne spray in the podium ceremonies.

Bell took the green flag and quickly picked his way through the field as he drove cleanly throughout the first four laps to make up five positions. He continued to show judgement and poise behind the wheel as he clicked off fast lap times and moved the BMW forward into the top-10. As the race neared the half-way point, Bell brought the No. 14 to pit lane for fuel and tires and handed over driving duties to Zacharias to take to the finish.

Despite quick pit work by the Doran Racing squad, Zacharias returned to the track with some work to do as he was deep in the pack. But the experienced racer was up to speed quickly, matching the quick pace previously set by Bell to push the machine ever closer to the front. That charge ended up just over one second short of the leader, but the result was still a welcome one for the entire Doran Racing team, which is staging the maiden campaign for the BMW 128i.

“When I started from 19th on the grid I just did my job and moved as many positions forward as possible,” said Bell. “ BJ just slowly worked his way up and then ran one of the the fastest times of the race.”

In a weekend that saw the Doran Racing team face numerous challenges leading up to the race including a transmission problem and a shortened final practice session, Bell faced limited practice time in his first visit to the Alabama natural terrain road course. However, the California native remained patient and optimistic throughout the weekend and that patience paid off for Bell as he made his first trip to the podium in the pro-driver ranks.

“With the challenges we had this weekend, I certainly didn’t know we were going to do this well,” Bell said of his second place result. “I was hoping for a top-10 because we were going to need at least a top-10 to keep in the points – but to come away with second is great. I had a couple really good battles out there, and it was a lot of fun. This was a great day and I’m leaving here with a smile, no question.”

Next up for Bell is the Bosch Engineering 200 at Virginia International Raceway May 13-14. The Barber 200 will broadcast April 16 at 2:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.
