Birmingham, AL-(10 April 2011) After starting from fifth on the grid with the No. 77 Office Depot Ford-Dallara and running in position for podium, Brian Frisselle and co-driver Henri Richard finished the Barber 250 in tenth position as the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series staged round three of the 2011 championship.
Frisselle opened the race from behind the wheel, looking to go easy on the tires and make the most of a possible long green flag run. That paid a short term dividend as the Office Depot car was up to third before turning the machine over to co-driver Richard on the 13th lap. Making his first visit to the complex 2.3-mile circuit, the leader in the rookie standings rejoined the pack in 19th, moving back to eventually have the machine once again in podium position. But the long green flag run and a stop for a driver change and new tires eventually saw the car down two laps to the leaders.
Frisselle, who moved easily to the front of the Homestead race, had been hoping to do so once again but despite a pair of yellow flags, the luck didn’t play out and the team wasn’t able to regain the laps to the leader. Despite the potential and speed the car showed, the team emerged from the race with a 10th place finish.
“The 90 and 99 had an incredible pace early on, but we were just trying to be conservative and smart with our race pace. Henri didn’t have many laps around this track, so he had to learn a lot this weekend, with the lack of track time not helping at all,” said Frisselle. “It is a very technical track, so it can be a challenge. We had a good strategy once again, but the way the yellows fell we just weren’t able to get that second lap back. It was frustrating because even though our car wasn’t as strong as it was at Homestead, it was still capable of a podium, no question. I think VIR is going to be a much better place for us.”
Frisselle returns to Rolex Sports Car Series competition May 13-14 for the Bosch Engineering 250 at Virginia International Raceway with the green flag set to wave at 3:00 PM (ET). Coverage of the event will broadcast May 14 at 5:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.
