Lakeville, Conn. (27 May 2011) – Matt Bell once again laid down some quick laps in the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R to earn his fifth consecutive top-10 starting position of the season at Lime Rock Park. With a lap time of 58.651 seconds during the 15-minute qualifying session, Bell will start Round 5 of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge from ninth on the grid in Saturday’s 2.5-hour Memorial Day Classic.

Bell and co-driver John Edwards proved to be fast from the start of the weekend, clicking off laps to complete the first practice session fourth, and the second practice 10th.

The Stevenson Motorsport team is utilizing a new wing this weekend and despite running in the top-10 all day, the configuration did not generate as much speed as the group had originally hoped for at the 1.5-mile circuit and is looking to get even more speed out of the Camaro.

“With the new wing that we were allowed to run, we thought it might be our savior, but here at Lime Rock it might actually be hurting more than helping,” said Bell after noting that another Camaro team had elected not to run it posted a faster (by all of .003 seconds…) time. The Stevenson squad, along with Bell and Edwards will regroup to determine the best setup for tomorrow’s race.

“Now, we have the gamble–do we remove the wing and start over with the set-up? Or do we just stick with it?” offered Bell. “One thing is that the wing helped a lot over the long run – my fastest lap was later in my run and that is not how qualifying normally goes. The wing also offers the driver a lot of information and it makes it more comfortable to drive. We’ll talk with the engineers and go through all the scenarios and decide what we are going to do. I’m optimistic about the progress we’ve made so far and hopefully we can come up with something good for tomorrow.”

The ninth place start marks the 11th consecutive top-10 grid spot for the California racer as he continues to impress when the pressure is on. Bell has not started outside the top-10 since April of last year at VIR, where the team rallied to score a debut podium for the Camaro.

Bell will take the green flag for the Memorial Day Classic tomorrow at 3:30 PM (ET). Tune in to www.grand-am.com for live timing and scoring during the race

Insight Racing Takes Fourth on Lime Rock Park Grid

Insight Racing Takes Fourth on Lime Rock Park Grid

Lakeville, Conn. (27, May 2011) -Insight Racing driver Tyler McQuarrie posted a fast lap time of 1:00.158 seconds in qualifying at Lime Rock Park to take fourth on the grid with the No. 18 Insight Racing BMW 328i for Saturday’s Memorial Day Classic.

McQuarrie will open the 2.5-hour race at the controls before turning the machine over to co-driver Nico Rondet as the team looks to build on its positive result in the most recent round of GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition.

Following a pair of practice sessions on Friday, one final 15-minute session to set the field saw over 30 cars take to the track to set the starting order for Saturday’s ST-only race. The lap was good for an average speed of 91.558 mph around the fabled 1.5-mile circuit, and was the fastest time of the ten BMW machines entered.

“The car got a lot better from when we first went out–it’s been better every session,” said McQuarrie after the session. “The problem is that there just isn’t too much track time with this schedule. So we made a big change for qualifying, but we hadn’t had a chance to try it out before hand. Fortunately, it was a good change! Pace wise, it was better. I would like to have had a little bit more clear track to string some laps together. You would get almost one clear lap, then have to slow down for traffic. But we are close to pole with that time, and starting close to the front. It is a testament to the series that it is so close with the times. If we can just have a clean start and stay out of trouble, I think we should be good in the race tomorrow.”

The ST machines will take the green flag for the 2.5-hour race on Saturday at 10:30 AM (ET).

Rum Bum Racing Charges to 3rd on Lime Rock Park grid

Rum Bum Racing Charges to 3rd on Lime Rock Park grid

Lakeville, Conn. (27 May 2011) – Rum Bum Racing returned to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition at Lime Rock Park looking for redemption after the team spent countless hours over the last week repairing the No. 13 Rum Bum BMW that had suffered extensive damage at Virginia International Raceway.

Those efforts were well rewarded in today’s qualifying session when Nick Longhi put down a quick lap-time of 58.251 seconds to start tomorrow’s Memorial Day Classic from inside the second row.

While the day did not get off to as quick of a start as the team had hoped due to ABS issues in the morning practice session, the Rum Bum Squad worked quickly to resolve the problem and had the BMW back up to speed to run in the top-five throughout the second practice. Both Longhi and co-driver Matt Plumb laid down some quick laps to complete the session in the third position.

“We had a brake issue that was a legacy of the crash at VIR, but the Rum Bum guys got it figured out,” said Longhi. “The brake problems this morning cut into our practice times pretty severely, so it was the second time in two races that I haven’t had many practice laps before qualifying.”

Longhi would strap in for the 15-minute qualifying session and click off consistently fast lap times as he maneuvered through the twists and turns of the high-speed 1.50-mile track. With his best lap time just a scant 0.428 seconds off the pole time, Longhi will start the 2.5-hour race from third on the grid.

“I was a bit conservative during the qualifying run because the guys put so much effort into turning this car around that I didn’t want to jeopardize anything by putting a wheel wrong,” commented Longhi. “I have to thank the entire Rum Bum Racing team – Joe Varde, John, Bob, Sean and Ed – and everyone else. This was a destroyed car a week ago, so it’s pretty cool that it’s back together now. We have a good starting spot for the race and we’ll build from there.”

Rum Bum Racing will take the green flag for the Memorial Day Classic tomorrow at 3:30 PM local time.

Hopwood Flies to Fifth at Lime Rock Park

Lakeville, CT (27 May, 2011)– Despite matching a season-best grid spot of fifth on the Lime Rock Park Memorial Day Classic grid with the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Koup, Trevor Hopwood (Eliot, ME) was still a little bit frustrated after the 15-minute qualifying session on Friday.

“I caught traffic right at the apex of the fastest corner and I had to hit the brakes,” Hopwood relayed about a lap that was still just over .3 of a second behind the pole-winning time. “That pretty much killed any shot we had at pole. But, that’s the nature of Lime Rock Park, it’s a busy place and traffic can catch you out.”

But despite not getting everything he felt the Kinetic Motorsports-prepared machine was capable of in qualifying for round five of the 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season, he was still encouraged with the way the home race event had progressed. Hopwood will open the 2.5-hour race from behind the wheel before turning the car over to Adam Burrows (Canton, CT) to take to the finish as the duo reverse roles from the rotation at VIR.

A braking issue in the morning session saw him struggle with huge entry speed and a significant lack of decelerating capability in the uphill corner, but he managed to escape with nothing worse than a Darlington Stripe along the side of the Koup. Still, the outcome cost some key track time to work on the set-up.

This was where having thousands of laps on a track came in handy as Hopwood jumped back in the car for qualifying and ran in the top five the entire session.

“It’s too bad we couldn’t have been closer to the front row, but the Forte Koup should be really good tomorrow in the race so I can’t be too upset,” said Hopwood, who made his GRAND-AM debut at the track in 2006. “A big Thanks to the Kinetic guys for turning the car around as quickly as they did to be ready for qualifying. It’s good to be in the top five for the start again, just like VIR, and hopefully we can come home even higher in the order here at the home race.”

Insight Racing Heads East to Lime Rock Park

Insight Racing Heads East to Lime Rock Park

Lakeville, Conn. (26, May 2011) – Racing at Virginia International Raceway for round four of the 2011 championship, Insight Racing drivers Nico Rondet and Tyler McQuarrie raced to a second place finish in the Street Tuner (ST) class with the No. 18 BMW 328i, finishing just .621 seconds adrift of the winner. Looking to achieve even better results, Insight Racing will return to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition this weekend at Lime Rock Park.

While the first four races of the season have seen the usual combined class format of both the ST and GS cars running simultaneously, the 2.5 hour race will see each class stage their own separate races. Unfortunately, some bad racing luck in the previous round will prevent Insight Racing from participating in both.

While the duo have shown race-leading pace in the opening races of the 2011 season, the drivers of the Insight Racing No. 19 BMW M3, Martin Jensen and Paul Gerrard have suffered from contact from competitors in the last two race outings. At Barber Motorsports Park, an overly ambitious passing move from another driver saw Jensen’s outing severely hindered after being hit. Looking to rebound at VIR, the BMW was once again knocked out of contention when a competitor experienced brake failure.

The incident caused significant damage to the No. 19 BMW M3 and forced the team to retire early. Following the race weekend, it has been determined that the damage was significant enough to require that the team make the decision to not enter the Lime Rock Park round with No. 19 BMW M3 machine. The setback is a double-blow to the team’s GS effort, as the back-to-back race weekend schedule of Lime Rock Park and Watkins Glen will not see the No. 19 machine back in action until round seven at Road America.

“VIR was an interesting weekend for us because on one hand, we were so pleased with the performance of the No. 18, yet we were all also disappointed after experiencing such a frustrating day for the No. 19,” said Insight Racing Team Principal & Director Gilbert Lynagh. “It is far from ideal with the short turn-around between races, so we’ve elected to make this decision. We would prefer to arrive at Elkhart Lake with a car that is ready to fight for a win than having to compromise our preparation for Lime Rock and the Glen. The podium result at VIR certainly was a positive indication of what this group is capable of. But we are not satisfied with second place, so we will look for even better results this weekend.”

Insight Racing returns to on-track action Friday, May 27 for official practice and qualifying. The ST machines will take the green flag for the 2.5-hour race on Saturday at 10:30 AM (ET).

Rum Bum Racing Makes a Visit to BMW NA Headquarters ahead of GRAND-AM Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park

Rum Bum Racing Makes a Visit to BMW NA Headquarters ahead of GRAND-AM Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park

Quick pit stop on the way to Memorial Day Classic

26 May 2011–This weekend, GRAND-AM will stage round five of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship at Lime Rock Park as the series makes its traditional visit to the Northwest Corner of Connecticut for the Memorial Day Weekend. The double-header Continental Tire race day will see the Street Tuner (ST) class machines do battle starting Saturday morning, with the Grand Sports (GS)-only 2.5 hour race set to take the green flag on Saturday afternoon.

But before the teams take to the track, there was time for a quick field trip as drivers and crew members from BMW-equipped teams including Rum Bum Racing paid a visit to the BMW of North America campus in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. The team personnel had the chance to meet the BMW Performance Parts team and tour the Accessory/Engineering and National workshop.

Following lunch and an opportunity to meet BMWNA employees, the guests were given a framed copy of the BWMNA ad featuring CTSCC teams (currently in this week’s Autoweek magazine – picture taken at VIR) from Larry Koch, BMWNA Motorsport Manager as well as a BMW Motorsport hat and shirt.

“This was a great opportunity to meet some of the folks who are so important to what we are doing every weekend in GRAND-AM,” said Rum Bum Racing driver Matt Plumb, who with co-driver Nick Longhi won the two final races of the 2010 season and the first race of 2011. “We are very exited to be representing BMW, and the M3 it is obviously an amazing platform to race with–that is clear by how many of our competitors choose the M3 to race with! I was very impressed with the people that we got to meet, and the passion that hey have for BMW is obvious. Hopefully we can give them something good to cheer about this weekend at Lime Rock!”

BMW won the 2010 GRAND-AM Manufacturers Championship in Grand Sport, and the Roundel has started the 2011 campaign with a strong championship defense. Having a BMW M3 finish either first or second in each of the opening four rounds of the season, the brand is tied for first in the Grand Sport championship. Heading to Lime Rock Park, which proudly utilizes the BMW Pace Car and has designated BMW as the “Official Vehicle” for the track, Rum Bum Racing is hoping to continue to show what the brand is capable of in some high-pressure situations.

Memorial Day Shootout at Lime Rock Park for Matt Bell

Memorial Day Shootout at Lime Rock Park for Matt Bell

Lakeville, Conn. (26 May 2011) – Following two consecutive top-10 finishes in the previous two rounds of GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition, Matt Bell and Stevenson Motorsports co-driver John Edwards will look to capitalize on this positive trend and make another run to the front in the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park this weekend.

Saturday’s 2.5-hour race marks Round 5 of the 10-race Continental Tire championship and as Bell returns to the 1.53-mile track in Lakeville, Connecticut, the California racer will roll into the picturesque facility with some fond memories, having scored a podium at the lightning-quick track in 2009 while racing with Turner Motorsport. Not only did Bell earn his second podium in his debut season, but he also led 12 laps on his way to a third place finish.

While Bell fondly remembers the highlights of that first trip to the Lime Rock podium, some fresher memories are not quite as fond and might have him looking for a measure of redemption this weekend.

Last year’s race saw him make yet another impressive qualifying run to start fourth on the grid, only to receive significant damage when another competitor made contact with the No. 9 Camaro in the opening stages of the race. Despite some quick repair work in the pits and consistently quick lap times once he got back on track, there was just not enough time to make up the needed track position and the team settled for a disappointing 19th place result.

“We didn’t have luck on our side last year, but we had a great car and were starting to unlock the potential,” said Bell. “The Stevenson Motorsport guys definitely deserved to be running up front like that but we just had a bit of bad luck take us out. Hopefully we can have a lot better luck on Saturday.”

Having earned the first-ever pole position for the Camaro last year, Bell has maintained his strong qualifying record again this year with grid spots firmly in the top ten in each of the four opening rounds including a front row start at Barber Motorsports Park in the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R. Entering the Lime Rock Park race weekend, Bell has yet more reason for optimism as his fourth place Lime Rock grid spot last year was preceded by yet another front row start in 2009.

The usual Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge format sees the Grand Sport and Street Tuner divisions take to the track at the same time, but Lime Rock’s unique line-up will see the two classes run separately on Saturday. Bell knows his way around the Connecticut circuit and as he looks ahead to this weekend’s event, he sets his sights on grabbing another top spot on the Memorial Day Classic starting grid.

“Lime Rock is such a quick, intense track and it can be a tricky place to pass so hopefully we can start up front and stay there,” said Bell. “We’ve been knocking on the door of a podium and the guys keep working to do whatever we can to make sure we keep a consistent race pace. That’s been the biggest challenge for us-just trying to engineer the car so it doesn’t become such a handful after a few laps. The super-quick laps are a challenge for the engineers, because you can lose a lap very easily if you pit at the wrong time. But the Stevenson guys on the pit box really know what they are doing and seem to come up with the right call, so hopefully we can use that to our advantage on Saturday.”

Bell returns to on-track action on Friday, May 27 for practice and qualifying, with the race slated to begin at 3:30 PM ET on Saturday.

PR inquiries about Matt Bell should be directed to Matt Cleary at Sunday Group Management; 317.908.2975 (mobile) or media @sundaymanagement.com

Tim Bell Set for Lime Rock Park Debut

Tim Bell Set for Lime Rock Park Debut

Lakeville, Conn. (26 May 2011) Tim Bell will add yet another new track to his racing resume this weekend as the Doran Racing driver makes his debut at Lime Rock Park for round five of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship season. Set to share the Office Depot No. 14 BMW 128i with BJ Zacharias, the rookie racer Bell has been soaking up the experience as he takes on the 10-round season in his first year of racing at the GRAND-AM level.

The Lime Rock Park layout is a deceptively simple one, with the 1.53-mile, seven-turn track boasting just one left hand turn and lots of high-speed corners. But there is a lot of lap time to be found in each of those corners and Bell is eager to experience first-hand a track that has historically both frustrated and pleased racing drivers, depending on the lap time.

“I’ve been spending time driving the track on iRacing to get ready for the weekend, and I feel like I’ve got a good feel for it, but I’ve learned this year that there is no replacing the real thing,” said Bell. “It is a rhythm track and it looks like it will be a lot of fun. Carrying your momentum through every corner will be key and I think this could be a place where the BMW is strong.”

While the 12th place result in the most recent round at VIR wasn’t what Bell had been hoping for following the breakthrough podium finish at Barber Motorsports Park, it still paid some dividends. Bell is still firmly fifth in the driver championship standings, and sliced some 11 points into the MESCO Building For The Future Rookie of the Year deficit. He still stands second, but is now just 25 markers in arrears as the season rounds into the second half with a back-to-back schedule of races the next two weeks.

Adding to the new range of experiences for Bell will be the unique format of the 2.5-hour race, as the event will mark the only single-class race of the year as it will be a Street Tuner-only event.

“I don’t know what to expect, but I know it will be good to not be constantly looking in the mirror to make sure there isn’t a GS car trying to drive right through you!” joked Bell about some of the possible perils of multi-class racing. “It looks like every lap at Lime Rock is busy for the drivers, so with an ST-only race, that will be one less thing to think about for us. Hopefully it plays to our advantage.”

The race weekend is a compressed one, with Friday setting the grid and a Saturday morning race start. The race will not carry coverage from SPEED, so tune in to www.grand-am.com for timing and scoring on Saturday.

Rum Bum Racing Ready To Rebound at Lime Rock Park

Rum Bum Racing Ready To Rebound at Lime Rock Park

“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.”
-Vince Lombardi

Lakeville, Conn. (26, May 2011) – When Rum Bum Racing left Virginia International Raceway, the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing BMW M3 had sustained heavy damage following an incident caused by a competitor which sent the BMW crashing into the tire barriers at a high-rate of speed.

The team certainly had its work cut out for them in order to repair the mangled car in the short turn-around between races in time for this weekend’s Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park.

With help from one of the team sponsors and BMW dealer The Imported Car Store, as well as the guys at Irish Mikes Collision, the Rum Bum squad worked relentlessly to make extensive repairs, and within just 72 hours had the BMW back in prime condition. The team then worked to set up the car for the quick 1.53-mile Lime Rock Park road course before setting off for the trip to Lakeville, Connecticut for Round 5 of the 10-race championship.

Plumb and co-driver Nick Longhi will look to score maximum points as the duo shares driving duties in the No. 13 Rum Bum machine again this weekend. Rum Bum Racing sits fourth in the team championship standings – just 36 points out of the lead – and as the season reaches the half-way point, it becomes ever more crucial to finish at the front and earn valuable championship points.

“We took a hard hit at VIR, but the Rum Bum boys just did an incredible job getting the BMW ready for this weekend,” said Plumb. “The car looks brand new and I have to thank The Imported Car Store for assisting in the quick turnaround. You would never know the condition it was in just days ago, so hats off to them and the entire Rum Bum team. Hopefully we can pay all that effort back with a big day on Saturday.”

With top-five finishes in the two Continental Tire opening rounds and a seventh place result at Barber, Rum Bum Racing understands what it takes to run up front. As the team returns to Lime Rock, Plumb and Longhi who both have vast experience at the track, hope to turn their luck around and set their sights on a return to the podium.

“For Luis Bacardi and Rum Bum Racing, the goal is to win championships and to compete at the top level,” offered Plumb, who resides in nearby Rhode Island. “Even with what happened at VIR, that goal remains the same and we’ll continue to go for wins, and score as many points as we can. This championship wasn’t decided until the last lap of the season last year, and I think it could be that close again this year so we will just keep fighting.”

“Lime Rock is an intense, busy track, and for Matt and I, it is a lot like coming home” said Longhi, who calls Nyack, New York home and has long been called on for his coaching and instructing skills at the tricky track. “Hopefully we can turn our luck around after what happened at VIR. The guys have put in so much work, and it shows when you come back from a crash like that and turn up at the tracking looking like we will at Lime Rock. Mr. Bacardi has put a group of people together at Rum Bum Racing that are second to none, and this is a top-notch organization so I’m very excited to get back to work this weekend.”

Leading up to the Memorial Day Classic event, Rum Bum Racing spent time visiting the BMW North American Headquarters in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey on Wednesday. Rum Bum Racing’s huge push in the second half of the season-which saw the duo score two wins and a run to second place in the final three races of the year–helped to push BMW to the 2010 GRAND-AM Manufacturers Championship.

While the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge normally sees the GS and ST cars racing simultaneously, the unique Lime Rock event format will see the two classes run separately.

Luis Bacardi’s Rum Bum Racing returns to action with official practice and qualifying on Friday. The green flag is set to drop for the Memorial Day Classic GS race at 3:30 PM (ET) on Saturday, May 27.
