Lakeville, CT (27 May, 2011)– Despite matching a season-best grid spot of fifth on the Lime Rock Park Memorial Day Classic grid with the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Koup, Trevor Hopwood (Eliot, ME) was still a little bit frustrated after the 15-minute qualifying session on Friday.
“I caught traffic right at the apex of the fastest corner and I had to hit the brakes,” Hopwood relayed about a lap that was still just over .3 of a second behind the pole-winning time. “That pretty much killed any shot we had at pole. But, that’s the nature of Lime Rock Park, it’s a busy place and traffic can catch you out.”
But despite not getting everything he felt the Kinetic Motorsports-prepared machine was capable of in qualifying for round five of the 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season, he was still encouraged with the way the home race event had progressed. Hopwood will open the 2.5-hour race from behind the wheel before turning the car over to Adam Burrows (Canton, CT) to take to the finish as the duo reverse roles from the rotation at VIR.
A braking issue in the morning session saw him struggle with huge entry speed and a significant lack of decelerating capability in the uphill corner, but he managed to escape with nothing worse than a Darlington Stripe along the side of the Koup. Still, the outcome cost some key track time to work on the set-up.
This was where having thousands of laps on a track came in handy as Hopwood jumped back in the car for qualifying and ran in the top five the entire session.
“It’s too bad we couldn’t have been closer to the front row, but the Forte Koup should be really good tomorrow in the race so I can’t be too upset,” said Hopwood, who made his GRAND-AM debut at the track in 2006. “A big Thanks to the Kinetic guys for turning the car around as quickly as they did to be ready for qualifying. It’s good to be in the top five for the start again, just like VIR, and hopefully we can come home even higher in the order here at the home race.”
