Lakeville, CT (25 May, 2011)– The 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship features a full roster of great events staged at some of the best race tracks on the continent. But for Adam Burrows (Canton, CT) and Trevor Hopwood (Elliot, ME), there is just no place like home as the former Series Champions look forward to this Saturday’s Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park.
Sharing the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Koup for Kinetic Motorsports, the duo have delivered an upward trajectory of results in the two most recent rounds with finishes of 10th and eighth as they look to power Kia, just three points out of the lead, towards a GRAND-AM Manufacturer Championship.
Lime Rock Park marks round five of the championship season as the series prepares to enter the second half of the 10-race championship. It will be a double dose of races the next two weekends, with the Lime Rock Park event quickly followed by a visit to Watkins Glen for round six the following weekend.
In addition to having lived close to and raced extensively on the fast-paced 1.53-mile classic at Lime Rock Park through the years, the track is the site of several significant moments and memories for the duo, who will look to add to that roster of highlights with yet another strong run in front of friends and family this weekend.
With Hopwood having pounded the Lime Rock Park pavement with everything from a thumping high horsepower GT-1 Corvette to mastering the momentum required to win on the track in Spec Racer competition, the high school teacher has a lot of laps on the track and is looking to put that experience to use again on Saturday.
“Adam and I have experienced a little bit of everything at Lime Rock Park, and it is one of my absolute favorite places to race,” said Hopwood, who would also mention Spa in Belgium as another outstanding track. “We’ve been able to bring the car home with some solid points the last two rounds and we want to just keep building on that and bring as many points as we can for Kia in the championship. A lap at Lime Rock is always busy for the driver and with the laps clicking off so quickly, it is always an intense race. I just can’t wait to get down there and get going.”
Lime Rock was also the place where the two first got the chance to impress Kinetic Motorsports, as the Georgia-based team gave them a run in the top GS class in 2008. The race saw the two show impressive pace, something that the team took notice of. That one-off weekend ended up turning into a new career break for the previous champions as the team called on their services to be pilots for the Kia factory racing program ahead of the 2010 season.
“Lime Rock Park is a track that rewards momentum more than outright horsepower, and strong braking and handling are key as well,” said Burrows, who also frequents the facility as an instructor for The Club at Lime Rock Park. “Kinetic continues to find more speed with this Forte Koup, and it should be a great match for this track. The VIR weekend was really encouraging with the pace we had in qualifying, and hopefully we can have a car that has that same kind of speed throughout the full race distance on Saturday. There is a lot of racing to go this year still, and with just a three point deficit in the Manufacturer Championship, we want to make the most of any opportunity we have to bring a great result home for Kia. And, to do it on our home track would make it that much better.”
The official running will get underway with practice on Friday , with qualifying slated for Friday afternoon. The 2.5-hour race takes the green flag at 10:30 AM local time.
