Westphal Takes Watkins Glen Pole for Insight Racing

Despite traffic on fastest lap, scores debut pole in second series start

Watkins Glen, NY- (2 June 2011) – Jeff Westphal made his return to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge look as seamless as his Series debut as he notched another new accomplishment for Insight Racing by scoring pole position for Friday’s Continental Tire 150.

Westphal will open the 2.5-hour race from behind the wheel of the No. 18 Insight Racing BMW 328i before turning the driving duties over to co-driver Nico Rondet. Westphal clocked a fast lap time of 2:09.430 seconds around the legendary 3.4-mile track to set the BMW on pole. The team finished the Virginia International Raceway race in second, led the event at Lime Rock Park, and will look to make a trip to the top step of the podium Friday at Watkins Glen. Watkins Glen, N.Y. (31 May 2011) – Rum Bum Racing had much to celebrate following the Memorial Day Classic when Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi drove to victory at Lime Rock Park just two weeks after the No. 13 BMW M3 had sustained heavy damage at VIR. The Rum Bum team put forth a tremendous effort to repair the car in time for the Memorial Day event and celebrated those hours of hard work in victory lane on Saturday.

While the entire Rum Bum group was elated with the result, the team only got to bask in the glow of victory for a short time before quickly turning to focus on preparing for the next one with the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge staging back-to-back race weekends and a trip to the historic Watkins Glen International road course this weekend.

Matt Bell Set For Daytona Prototype Return at Watkins Glen

Matt Bell Set For Daytona Prototype Return at Watkins Glen

Lakeville, Conn. (1 June 2011) – After backing up an outstanding debut run in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototypes with a pair of strong encore performances, Matt Bell has once again got the call-up to the bigs as Doran Racing has signed the young Californian to join the team’s Daytona Prototype campaign in the Sahlen’s Six Hours at Watkins Glen this weekend.

The return to GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series action will mark Bell’s fourth career Daytona Prototype start, having scored the prestigious Trueman Award honor in his debut run at New Jersey Motorsports Park last year. Bell, who has earned a reputation as an ace in qualifying and a canny racer once the green flag flies, followed that strong NJMP debut up with stout performances for Doran Racing in the 2010 season-ending race at Miller Motorsports Park and once again in the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

2007: Finish 6th on way to championship
2008: Win
2009: P5 finish
2010: Start/18, F/12

Watkins Glen NY (1 June, 2011)– While the home race at Lime Rock Park didn’t go as planned for Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood, the duo at least won’t have to wait long for another shot at glory. The former champions will be back in GRAND-AM race action this weekend with the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Koup for Kinetic Motorsports starting with practice and qualifying this Thursday at Watkins Glen International.

Friday’s Continental Tire 150 (SPEED, June 12) will mark round six of the 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship season as the two Kia drivers return to the site of their debut GRAND-AM race win (2008). A brake issue at Lime Rock Park preceded a string of setbacks that culminated in the No. 12 machine not making it to the race finish, dashing hopes of a strong result at the home track for Burrows and Hopwood. But with the Glen so close on the horizon, the duo have already closed the LRP chapter and are looking forward to improving on their race finish from last year (12th) at the classic upstate New York track.

GAMMA88 Extends Sponsorship with AIM Autosport

GAMMA88 Extends Sponsorship with AIM Autosport

Three More Races this Season as Primary Sponsor

Courtesy AIM Autosport Marketing Communications

Woodbridge, Ont. (May 31, 2011) — AIM Autosport is pleased to announce that GAMMA88 will be the primary sponsor of its BMW-Riley Daytona Prototype for three more races this season. The fuel and oil supplement manufacturer is pleased with the results of its two-race sponsorship and is eager to do more. GAMMA88 will return as the primary sponsor for races at Road America, Watkins Glen International and Montreal.

As a new company, GAMMA88 needed to gain awareness and AIM Autosport has been a key component in that strategy. At the same time, however, costs must be kept in check and, based upon available budget, sponsorship was limited to three select races.

AIM is working to find sponsorship to fill out the remainder of the season, but has elected not to enter the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park and Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen at Watkins Glen International.

“The Best Car I’ve Ever Had” Powers Rum Bum Racing to Lime Rock Park Victory

“The Best Car I’ve Ever Had” Powers Rum Bum Racing to Lime Rock Park Victory

Lakeville, Conn. (28 May 2011) – Just two weeks after suffering disappointment that would have put lesser teams on their back foot, Rum Bum Racing rebounded with an outstanding start to finish performance to return to victory lane as Nick Longhi and Matt Plumb won the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park with the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing BMW M3.

The race, which marked the halfway point of the 2011 season, followed a race-ending crash with the No. 13 Rum Bum BMW M3 in the most recent round after Plumb was punted off-track at VIR while battling in the lead pack.

“The car was just perfect, lap after lap it did the same thing–every lap,” said Plumb of his run up front. “The car couldn’t have been better. It was the best car I’ve ever driven. It was the same in every corner, on every lap, the entire time. And the fact that that thing was in pieces a week ago, and now it’s at the top of the podium. It is unbelievably magical.”

Longhi opened the race from third on the grid, and after judiciously avoiding some questionable driving from a competitor, moved in to the lead on lap 44 before turning the car over to Plumb on a lap 63 pit stop. Stalking his way back up the order, Plumb put the Rum Bum machine back up front on lap 83, and never looked back, growing a huge lead over the rest of the field in the final 60 laps. But it was not a clear sail into the sunset, as a pair of late-race caution periods erased the gap and gave the field two shots at dethroning the leading No. 13.

But Plumb would have none of it, pulling away both times to come home an elated first-place as Rum Bum Racing scored a second win of the season to launch back up to second in the unofficial standings.

“It was a hectic couple of weeks after we got taken out at VIR. And the car was close to destroyed, almost totaled,” said Longhi. “These guys, Joe Varde and everyone here, just worked so hard. It is a great outcome and fantastic reward that all the guys put in to fix this car. There was so much wrong, but they did a perfect job. I’m really glad to be here. We really didn’t know what we were going to have on our hands. It turned out, obviously, perfect. The goal was to do the best we could here and get to Watkins Glen next week, which is another important race for us and a track we like. First place is obviously a testament to a perfect job done by the crew. It’s all them.”

After closing the 2010 season with a flurry of wins and returning to Daytona International in winning style to open the 2011 campaign, the team is hoping to keep the championship momentum going through a hectic summer stretch of races.

“I’m just so thankful that we pulled this off after what happened at VIR. This team, this crew, they deserve this every time so to give it to them feels good,” said Plumb, who celebrated with some special guests in Victory Lane as his two sons also soaked in the celebrations. “During the green flag laps, I knew we had a good car and good pace. There was a ton of tire rubber build up on the track. So I just wanted to keep my tires clean. I’ve driven with Bill (Auberlen) and against him and I knew he wasn’t going to do anything silly. I had saved the tires and brakes as much as I could when I had that gap and I used that to be conservative with the car, so that really helped at the end. I still had a lot of car available, it was just perfect. I’m so elated with this outcome and I can only thank Mr. Bacardi and all the effort that everyone puts towards this team.”

The Continental Tire 150 will take the green flag Friday at 6:00 PM at Watkins Glen for round six.

Big Rally For Matt Bell at Lime Rock Park

Cut tire sends him back before racing forward

Lakeville, Conn. (28 May 2011) After a cut tire sent him spinning, Matt Bell and his Stevenson Motorsports team had a huge hill to climb after the No. 9 Camaro fell nearly two laps behind the leader, but Bell and co-driver John Edwards rallied back to score their second consecutive top-five result of the season with a run to fourth place in Saturday’s Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park.

The fourth place result in Round 5 of the 10-race Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship marks the best finish of the season for the Stevenson Motorsports drivers.

Despite falling to 22nd following the unscheduled green flag pit stop, the California native began methodically moving up through the field as he negotiated his way through the intense, high-speed 1.5-mile Connecticut road course. By lap 60, Bell had worked his way into the 16th position and began clicking off smooth, consistent laps to move into 10th by lap 70. Bell dropped into a solid rhythm and was continuing to move forward when Stevenson Motorsports utilized a caution on lap 82 for a pit stop which would see Bell head to pit lane while running eighth.

“I felt the tire going down, and then it just let go and spun me around,” said Bell. “The guys did a great job to get me back out quickly but in a green flag stop you are just going to lose a lap here at Lime Rock. We were lucky not to lose two. I had to fight for every spot but the car was good and I’m really happy about how it went today.”

The Stevenson Motorsports squad made quick work of a driver change and routine pit stop and Edwards would return to the track in the 11th position. He quickly resumed the quick pace Bell had previously set and in similar fashion began to move his way through the competitive GS field to improve seven positions and bring the Camaro home fourth.

“Hats off to Stevenson for this huge rally,” said Bell. “The car was very consistent from the start of my stint to the end, even though we ran so many laps on the right side tires. The car was great. We will celebrate tonight, but then it’s straight on to preparing for the race at Watkins Glen next weekend.”

Bell does not have much down time before the next GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship round as the series heads to Watkins Glen International for the Continental Tire 150 in just four days.

Bell will participate in a promoter test day on Wednesday, June 1 followed by official practice and qualifying on Thursday. The Continental Tire 150 is set to begin Friday at 6:00 PM local time.

Insight Racing leads at Lime Rock Park on the way to fourth at the finish

Insight Racing leads at Lime Rock Park on the way to fourth at the finish

Lakeville, Conn. (28 May, 2011) -Insight Racing was once again in a familiar position on Saturday as the team led 19 laps of the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park for round five of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. But after scoring a second place finish in the most recent round of GRAND-AM racing, a run to the top of the podium for Insight Racing was denied after a small brake issue compromised the race outing for drivers Tyler McQuarrie and Nico Rondet in the No. 18 Insight Racing BMW 328i.

McQuarrie opened the race from behind the wheel, and moved forward to lead the race on lap 43 of the 136-lap event. Growing his gap over the field to over five seconds, McQuarrie only ceded the lead when he was called into the pits some 19 laps later.

“The car was great-it never fell off (in lap times),” said McQuarrie after his stint. “My biggest concern going into the race was the start, but we came out of turn one in fourth and it was a clean start so I was happy with that. Then we just stayed in the train for a while. The leader was kind of holding us up but I was just biding my time and saving the car. It’s hard to pass here, and it just wasn’t worth it to do anything foolish at that point. But if there was an opportunity that came up, I took it. The car was awesome. I worked really hard out there when I got the lead to try to give us as much of a gap as we could before the pit stop.”

Rondet assumed the controls and returned to the track 18th in the running order, and moved up to once again press for a podium position. But that forward progress was thwarted after a quick spin. He fought back to sit fourth for the final restart on lap 129 and held his ground to finish just over one second behind the leader.

“Tyler drove a fantastic race and the team gave us a great car,” offered Rondet. “We are still struggling a little down the straight away with the rules as they are. We made the most out of the strategy as it played out, but then I had a bit of a braking problem. So I lost the positions from running second when the ABS had an issue, and I only had rear brakes and it spun me around and it almost happened a second time. So, it was an exciting race! At the end with the restarts, I couldn’t really get up to get into the fight, but I knew that anything could happen so I wasn’t giving anything up until the final lap. We got a lot of points today, and we’ll take this and move on to the Glen.”

“We had pace, the engineering effort put the car up where it belonged, and we had a great effort from the drivers so it was frustrating not to take a win today,” said Insight Racing Principal and Director Gil Lynagh. “Tyler did a phenomenal job, everything we asked him to do-save the car, save the tires, perfectly. Nico had little bit a of an issue with the brakes, I think there was some pad knock back that caught him out. Luckily, he saved it without flat spotting the tires too much. We had the race-we were there. Even at the end, we had the pace to win. But a small thing like the brake issue just cost us today. The team, the crew, drivers, performed excellent. We can’t wait to get the GS car together and back on track as well. We had a great week with getting to visit the folks at BMW NA and their support is very much appreciated. All in all, I’m happy. We are pushing and we are doing everything we can to prepare to win. I feel like this is a very competitive team, and we should be a force to be reckoned with.”

Insight Racing will return to race action soon as GRAND-AM reconvenes for the Continental Tire 150 event at Watkins Glen International.

Tim Bell Makes Lime Rock Park Debut with Office Depot BMW

Tim Bell Makes Lime Rock Park Debut with Office Depot BMW

Lakeville, Conn. (28 May 2011) – As Tim Bell marked the half-way point of his rookie GRAND-AM season in the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park, he delivered yet another strong performance at the controls of the No. 14 Office Depot BMW 128i in his first visit to the Northwest Connecticut track.

At the drop of the green flag, Bell quickly maneuvered through the twists and turns of the busy 1.5-mile circuit and made a charge forward in the ST calss-only race. The California racer picked up five positions during the first lap to run 18th and continued to move his way through the field to run as high as 11th before turning the No. 14 Office Depot machine over to co-driver BJ Zacharias.

Bell was forced to pit under green flag conditions when the rear bumper began to drag after a competitor hit the No. 14 from behind. Despite a great driver change and quick work by the Doran Racing crew to make repairs, Zacharias would re-enter the race in 24th position. In a race that saw several late cautions, Zacharias steadily climbed back up through the field to take the checkered flag in the 15th position.

“The car was great in the beginning and it was fun to move forward in those opening laps,” said Bell of the stint. “But then the tires started to go off a bit, we struggled with understeer. We also had some power down issues later in the run and weren’t as strong on the straights, so to end up 15th is not bad considering the problems we were dealing with. The Doran guys really improved the car since yesterday and even without the perfect car we were able to hang in there for a solid finish.”

The result marks the fourth consecutive top-15 finish for the Doran Racing duo.

Bell returns to on-track action in just four days as GRAND-AM stages The Continental Tire 150 and Round 6 of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship at Watkins Glen. Bell will participate in a promoter test day on Wednesday, June 1 followed by official practice and qualifying on Thursday. The Continental Tire 150 is set to begin on Friday at 6:00 PM local time.

Early End to Promising Day For Burrows and Hopwood at Lime Rock Park

Early End to Promising Day For Burrows and Hopwood at Lime Rock Park

Lakeville, Conn. (28 May, 2011)– Kinetic Motorsports drivers Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood had long been looking forward to the home race and round five of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship as the series hit the halfway mark on the season with a return to Lime Rock Park for the Memorial Day Classic.

But after racing up into a strong podium position early in the event, Saturday’s 2.5 hour race ended short of the potential on offer as the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Koup suffered a mechanical set-back that saw the former champions’ day end early.

“It started to smoke a bit in the corners and it just developed a big push so I felt like we might be in trouble,” said Hopwood, who had been hoping to show particularly well with so many friends and several members of the Hop clan on hand. “That ultimately ended up causing a brake problem, and I had no brakes coming into the uphill but I was at least able to spin it and slow down enough to get away with just hitting the wall a little bit. But our shot at a podium was done at that point.”

Not done at that point though was the fighting spirit of the Kinetic Motorsports crew as the Lee Webb-led No. 12 car group worked to refit an entire left front section of the suspension. Despite losing some time on pit lane with the repairs, it was back to the battle for Burrows as he rejoined the field to harvest as many points as possible toward the Kia Manufacturer Championship aspirations.

Alas, the previous contact had caused more damage than was initially clear and unsettled some mechanical fixtures as Burrows’ run was ultimately stopped short when he pulled to the side of the track to clear the race traffic.

“It is a shame to have our day end so early here at the home race, particularly when we were right on track with our race strategy,” said Burrows, who with Hopwood finished fifth in the most recent round of GRAND-AM action. “Ultimately, I just couldn’t make it back to the pits so I had to stop out there. It’s not the outcome we were looking for. But on the other hand, we were running right in the lead pack, and now we’re headed to a place where we’ve won (Watkins Glen) before, so hopefully we can bounce back from this next Friday. Thanks to the Kinetic guys’ hard work to get me back out there, hopefully we can bring them the championship points that their effort deserves next weekend.”
