Millville, NJ ( 23 July, 2011)– Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood combined to take an eighth place finish in Saturday’s B+ Foundation Heroes 200 with the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Forte Koup in round nine of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship. Burrows opened the race from ninth on the grid and by the 15th trip around the 2.25-mile circuit, had worked his way up to sixth in the order.

He then turned the car over to Hopwood, who in turn kept the forward momentum going by pushing up to second place in the 2.5 hour event. A final pit stop saw a change from the traditional strategy with one last driver change as Burrows returned to the controls and rejoined the race in 22nd. Despite the heat, he made constant forward progress to score eighth at the finish.

“We went with a different pit strategy to try to have the freshest tires we could at the end, and the freshest driver,” said Burrows. “It was a different approach, but we wanted to make sure we were going to be strong late in the race despite the heat. It also gave the team more options in terms of pit windows for the No. 10 car. The heat was pretty intense, but fortunately I think this strategy helped Trev and I both get the most out of the car today and hopefully we can have a strong finish to the year at Mid-Ohio.”

“This race was much easier than last year!” joked Hopwood, who had to muscle to the finish without power steering in the 2010 running at NJMP. “The car was good, and it was great to once again have the Kia fighting at the front end of the field. We lost some track position on the final stop but Adam did a great job to keep moving up all the way to the end. It was a shame that the ten car’s day went south right at the end, hopefully they can finish the job at Mid-Ohio.”

The final race of the 2011 campaign will be held September 16-17 at Mid-Ohio. In the meantime, please take a moment to visit http://bepositive.org/ to see how you can help.

Promising Start but Tough Finish for Matt Bell in New Jersey

Promising Start but Tough Finish for Matt Bell in New Jersey

Millville, N.J. (23 July 2011) – Looking to score his third win in as many races, Matt Bell got off to a strong start in the B+ Foundation Heroes 200, but a promising beginning to the 2.5-hour New Jersey Motorsports Park event left the Stevenson Motorsports team looking to fight back in the final round.

Bell opened the ninth round of GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition with a remarkable run from 10th place on the grid – moving forward five positions within the first five laps. He continued to charge the No. 9 Camaro GS.R even further up the order and moved into the third position just prior to the first race caution.

Stevenson Motorsports would call Bell to pit road and the team quickly worked a routine pit stop for fuel and tires which saw the Camaro return to the track in the ninth position. However, GRAND-AM cut the forward progress short when the team was issued a 30-second stop-and-go penalty for a pit lane infraction and Bell would fall to 18th.

Despite emerging deep in the field, the poised young California racer began to steadily work his way back to the front and slotted into the ninth position following the second restart. However, the run at the front would come to an end when the Camaro made contact with another car and ended up off track. The No. 9 machine sustained significant damage to the left-front of the car and Bell was forced to return to pit lane.

The Stevenson Motorsports squad changed the entire left-front suspension but benefited from a full course caution which was displayed just after Bell hit pit road for repairs. Following fast pit work by the Stevenson Motorsports crew, co-driver John Edwards strapped in behind the wheel of the Camaro and drove to a 15th place finish.

“The car was very good,” said Bell. “You can’t see a whole lot with the Camaro so I didn’t know there was a stack of tires when I came out of our pit box and I hit the next team’s tires. We had a drive through plus-30 (second) penalty so I ended up at the back of the field and just tried to make my way back up through the field. I kind of got pinched down to the inside of turn one and it was my mistake.

“I didn’t know it was going to be that slick on the inside and the car barely slowed down and I hit the No. 01. You hate to ruin anyones race, but especially another Camamro. Stevenson once again was amazing–the team had a record-quick suspension change so that was pretty incredible. It’s unfortunate but we’re going to keep trying.”

Bell next travels to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio for the final round of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

“We were on the pole at Mid-Ohio last year and I like that track so we’ll do our best,” offered Bell of the final round of competition in September. “We took a hit in the championship today, but we’ll see how far up the standings we can go.”

The GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge will see a break in race action with the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio set to take place September 16-17.

SPEED will broadcast the B+ Foundation Heroes 200 on July 30 at 3:00 PM (ET).

Tim Bell Nearly Nets Top Ten in New Jersey

Tim Bell Nearly Nets Top Ten in New Jersey

Millville, N.J. (23 July 2011) – Adding to his burgeoning list of racing accomplishments, Tim Bell had another successful debut at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Round 9 of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge as he and Doran Racing co-driver BJ Zacharias drove the No.14 Office Depot BMW 128i to an 11th place finish in the B+ Foundation Heroes 200.

Bell opened the 2.5-hour event from 12th on the grid under sweltering conditions as the New Jersey circuit experienced a second day of record-high temperatures. Despite racing the No. 14 BMW for the first time in such extreme heat, Bell delivered the performance of a much more experienced driver – clicking off quick, consistent lap times on his way to moving up eight positions to fourth place in just 25 laps.

Near the half-way point of the race, Bell made the team’s final pit stop and handed the controls of the No. 14 BMW to Zacharias who would run as high as seventh throughout the closing stages. It would appear that the Doran Racing duo would claim their second consecutive top-10 finish, but some all-too-close racing saw the BMW going off track on the final restart and dropped to 11th place. With only minutes left in the race, the track could not be cleaned up in time to restart the race and it would finish under caution.

“The car was really good and I ran in fourth place for a while,” said Bell. “We didn’t feel like we had a top-10 car so running fourth was pretty good for us. For some reason our handling went out the door early in the race so BJ (Zacharias) had a car that he was struggling with. I was trying to save the car for BJ and be conservative with the driver cooling and everything–you don’t want to use it all up before he gets in the car! We just tried to keep the car clean so it’s a pretty good result for the amount of damage and carnage that went on out there. ”

Bell will complete his rookie season in September when the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge travels to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

“I’ve never been to Mid-Ohio before so hopefully can get a chance to go to my simulator and try it out,” said Bell. “We can out-brake just about everybody out there so I think if we get our motor situation sorted out, we’ll definitely have a chance.”

The final round of GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition will be held September 16-17.

Coverage of the B+ Foundation Heroes 200 event will broadcast July 30 at 3:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Rum Bum Racing Fights to Fifth in New Jersey

Rum Bum Racing Fights to Fifth in New Jersey

Late-Race yellow compromises strategy

Millville, N.J. (23 July 2011) – Rum Bum Racing had been looking to make it three podiums in a row in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition as the series staged round nine of the 2011 championship at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Despite setting the fastest lap of the race and having a strategy that should have harvested a podium result, Rum Bum Racing had to fight back to finish fifth in the Be Positive Foundation Heroes 200 after a yellow flag put paid to a chance at an encore podium at the track for Rum Bum Racing drivers Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi.

Longhi opened the race from behind the wheel, and after making a conservative start was soon up to third in the order. Looking to move up without taking any risks, Longhi still showed the pace that the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing M3 was capable of as he clocked the fastest lap of the race on just the fourth lap.

A few laps later, the race leader was sent spinning from the front after running across some oil on the track. Unfortunately, the track conditions also sent the Rum Bum machine spinning–nearly.

Longhi was able to save the car from spinning off-track and instead of suffering the same fate as the leader, just drove straight through the run-off area before safely returning to the course. While the quick action kept the car out of harms way, it still cost some track position as Longhi fell to 10th.

“We had the fastest car of the race,” said Longhi, whose son Max was on hand and celebrating his birthday. “I was pretty happy with the start, and everyone behaved. But then I encountered something–not sure what it was– but it sent me off. So to keep from spinning the car, I just went straight. At that point, just wanted to be conservative and careful and pick my spots to move back up. When you fall back, you race against some guys who might not have the same approach as the guys driving at the front so you have to be careful. But being consistent always pays off, and I was just saving the car and fuel and trying to move up where I could.”

But using the most of the speed in the car saw Longhi pick his way back forward to move to sixth before turning the car over to Plumb on a quick stop just under an hour into the race.

Plumb returned to the fray and after working forward from seventh in the order, was once again up to podium position by lap 36. One final pit stop saw the Rum Bum BMW fueled to the finish, with Plumb eighth on the restart. The strategy play was set to have the BMW the only machine ready to go all the way to the finish, with Plumb and Longhi doing their part to conserve fuel all along.

Unfortunately, a full course caution on lap 44 spelled the end of the advantage as the competition got a free pass to pit and take on fuel to the finish as the field circulated behind the pace car. With the advantage erased, and the Rum Bum machine mired deep in the pack, it was a tough run to the finish. But Plumb once again showed his speed and smarts to bring the car home fifth at the finish.

“Everything was good until that yellow came out,” said Plumb, who had been hoping to be the first driver to see the checkered flag that his mother had been selected to wave as part of the Be Positive event.

“The strategy was right, but the advantage went out the window at that point. So, we were back in that pack, and just not getting all the air to the car as we needed to be, so the temps were higher than they normally would be. That cost us some power today. So even though the car continued to handle great, I just didn’t have the grunt I needed to move up. It is a shame because we had so many friends and family here this weekend to root us on and to support the Be Positive organization that a podium would have been a great way to not only close out the day but also make a dent in the championship.”

SPEED will show the 2.5-hour race at 3:00 PM (ET) on July 30.

Matt Bell Has the Inside Line in New Jersey

Matt Bell Has the Inside Line in New Jersey

Set to start from fifth row on a sweltering Saturday

Millville, N.J. (23 July 2011) – Matt Bell will start the B+ Foundation Heroes 200 from the fifth row at New Jersey Motorsports Park after qualifying the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R 9th on the grid with a time of 1:31.020 seconds.

As Bell and co-driver John Edwards look to score their third consecutive GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge victory, the duo aims to move up the order throughout the 2.5-hour event.

“We knew we were only going to get two or three laps on the tires, so we waited to go out until a little later in the session,” said Bell of the qualifying run. “The car was not 100%, but the Stevenson guys spent a lot of time changing the whole cooling system and once again showed that they are the hardest working team in the paddock. We know what needs to happen with the car based on what we’ve already done this weekend and what the car feels like, so I’m not concerned and I’m sure they’ll give us a great car for the race.”

The 2.5-hour race will begin at 2:45 PM (ET) and can be followed with live timing and scoring on www.grand-am.com. Some eligible viewers can also see the event LIVE on www.speed2.com.

Millville, NJ (23 July, 2011)– Adam Burrows will start the B+ Foundation Heroes 200 from the fifth row after a fast lap time of 1:34.529 seconds in the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Forte Koup for Kinetic Motorsports. Saturday’s race at New Jersey Motorsports Park is the penultimate round of the 2011 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship. Burrows will start the 2.5 hour race from behind the wheel before turning the controls over to co-driver Trevor Hopwood.

The race is slated to start at 2:45 on Saturday afternoon as the weekend continues to feature record high temperatures and remarkable humidity.

“The car was good but I got balked by a BMW in the last corner heading on to the front stretch and that cost me a good bit of time on my fastest lap,” said Burrows. “But the car is good so hopefully we can rectify our starting position with a move up once the race starts. We had a great dinner with a fun group of Kia dealers last night and there are a lot of folks from Kia here for the race so hopefully we can give them something to cheer for. We really appreciate their support, and for them to be out here in this incredible heat says a lot about the passion that they have.”

Rum Bum Racing Set for Sixth on NJMP Grid

Rum Bum Racing Set for Sixth on NJMP Grid

Millville, N.J. (23 July 2011) – Rum Bum Racing continued to show strong pace at New Jersey Motorsports Park in the penultimate round of GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition. Saturday’s 2.5-hour B+ Foundation Heroes 200 will see Nick Longhi start from sixth on the grid after setting a fast lap time of 1:30.728 in the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing BMW M3 in qualifying on Saturday morning.

Rum Bum Racing started fourth and finished second in the 2010 event at NJMP. The Longhi-Matt Plumb combination have led 135 laps so far this year, and will look to lead even more on Saturday as they pursue a third consecutive podium.

“I wasn’t 100% happy with my fastest lap, but it is still a solid place on the grid and it gives us a good base to start the race from,” said Longhi. “Going through the data after the session, I think we could have been third on the grid but we had a small hold up on the back stretch on my fastest lap. So, we were hoping for a little bit more (in qualifying), but the car is very good and that’s the biggest thing. The heat is going to be an issue for everyone. Hopefully we get a clean start and can just use our heads in our approach and come out of here with a big result.”

The event will see Longhi’s co-driver Matt Plumb take over the controls to power the car to the finish. Adding even more motivation for Plumb is the fact that his mother, Donnan Jones, will be waving the checkered flag. Jones is a cancer survivor and made a generous donation to the B+ Foundation and was awarded the honor as a token of thanks and recognition.

The B+ Foundation Heroes 200 green flag is slated for a 2:45 PM (ET) start.

Rum Bum Racing Fast on Friday

Rum Bum Racing Fast on Friday

Millville, N.J. (22 July 2011) – Rum Bum Racing had another successful day at New Jersey Motorsports Park as the team prepared for tomorrow’s B+ Foundation Heroes 200 under sweltering weather conditions. Nick Longhi and Matt Plumb topped the day’s final practice session with the No. 13 BMW M3 posting a fast lap time of 1:31.165 seconds.

Following Thursday’s promoter test day, the Rum Bum squad continued to improve the No. 13 machine and started off strong with the fourth quickest time in the first practice session. The team battled the heat all day at the New Jersey road course with abundant sunshine accompanied by temperatures approaching the 100 degree mark.

“The car was great, even though the conditions are very difficult,” said Longhi, who will qualify the car on Saturday. “It is incredibly warm. I ran that session without the cool suit, and it was fine while I was in the car. But then when you get out, it is just incredible with this heat. But it was good to run in these conditions because it’s likely exactly what we’ll have tomorrow in the race.”

With similar conditions expected for tomorrow’s qualifying session and 2.5-hour race, Plumb took over the controls of the Rum Bum Racing BMW M3 and returned to the track after Longhi posted the fastest lap time.

“Nick was very quick again in that session and I was just getting some laps in to confirm where we were with the set up and to also make sure my cool suit was working!” said Plumb.

“The car seems good and the drivers are happy, so it was a good day today,” offered crew chief Joe Varde. “We have to be smart with the heat. I think that it’s going to be a big factor tomorrow, but we’ve got a plan for the race so we’ll see how everything plays out.”

Rum Bum Racing will return to the track tomorrow morning for a 15-minute qualifying session at 10:10 AM (ET) with the B+ Foundation Heroes 200 green flag slated for a 2:45 PM (ET) start.

SPEED will show the 2.5-hour race at 3:00 PM (ET) on July 30.

Big Week for Be Positive in New Jersey

Courtesy B+ Foundation

22 July 2011–The week of The B+ Foundation Heroes 200 scheduled for Saturday, July 23 at New Jersey Motorsports Park started on a high note for the B+ Foundation and B+ Racing drivers Al Carter, a cancer survivor and Wilmington, Delaware resident and Hugh Plumb from Unionville, Pennsylvania.

On Tuesday night The B+ Foundation fund raiser was a true success and $24,000 was raised for The B+ Foundation. 300 VIP guests attended the fund raiser and bought paintings from 2010 Rolex 24 At Daytona program cover artist, Frenchman Erwin Dazelle. The original of The B+ Racing acrylic on canvas went for $10,000! Other items were auctioned including the right to wave the checkered flag of The B+ Foundation Heroes 200. Mrs Donnan Sharp bought the right to wave the checkered flag of The B+ Foundation Heroes 200. It could be a very exciting moment on the flag stand when Donnan waves the flag because she is the mother of Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge drivers Hugh and Matt Plumb, two of the top winning contenders for Saturday’s race.

The B+ Foundation organized a B+ Racing Facebook contest with a chance to win the right to wave the green flag of The B+ Foundation Heroes 200. Andrew Koenig won the contest and he is the father of drew Koenig, a 5-year old childhood cancer survivor. Drew was diagnosed at 4 with Medulloblastoma a malignant brain tumor. He has had multiple surgeries, received 8 round of intravenous chemotherapy, 2 stem cell replacements, and 8 weeks of radiation in Boston at Massachusetts General. His parents Andrew and Catherine are young people with 2 boys Drew and Jack being the younger brother. The entire family will be guest of The B+ Foundation at The B+ Foundation Heroes 200 on Saturday. Drew and Andrew will wave the green flag!
