Watkins Glen, N.Y. (12 August 2011) – Burt Frisselle qualified the No. 61 GAMMA88 BMW-Riley seventh on the Canadian Tire 200 grid with a time of 1:07.169 seconds at the Watkins Glen International short-course event.

Frisselle returns to AIM Autosport for the 10th round of 2011 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series competition and will take the green flag for the two-hour sprint event from the fourth row before relinquishing the No. 61 GAMMA88 machine to co-driver Mark Wilkins for the second half of the race.

The Colorado racer topped the speed charts in the third practice session of the day and had hoped to carry that momentum into the quick 15-minute qualifying session, but changing track conditions saw Frisselle looking for more.

“I think we probably timed going out a little too soon with the NASCAR rubber and we actually went slower than our practice time which is not normal at all for qualifying,” said Frisselle of the run. “We probably had a little more in it, but we have some work to do. We need to gain a chunk and if we can accomplish that hopefully we’ll be able to put up a good fight with the guys up front. AIM is always so good here at the Glen, and I know they are going to come up with something good for us in the race.”

The Canadian Tire 200 begins Saturday, August 13 at 6:00 PM (ET) with SPEED broadcasting live coverage of the event. The two-hour race is set to go green at 6:00 PM (ET) on Saturday with SPEED carrying live race coverage.

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (12 August 2011) – Brian Frisselle will start the Canadian Tire 200 from the third row of the grid after posting a quick lap time of 1:06.907 seconds around the 2.45-mile Watkins Glen International short-course in the 10th round of the 2011 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season. Having led the day’s second practice session, Frisselle had been hopeful for a sixth consecutive top-five starting spot at the Glen’s short-course event, but battled unexpected handling issues during the 15-minute qualifying session.

Having opening the first segments of the session by sharing the provisional front row with his brother by holding on to the two top spots, he was also frustrated to encounter some precious pace-stealing traffic on his fastest lap of the session, costing him dearly.

Frisselle will open the two-hour sprint event from sixth place before handing the No. 77 Office Depot Ford-Dallara over to Doran Racing co-driver Henri Richard.

“We were fighting understeer earlier and either the track changed significantly or we overstepped our changes,” said Frisselle. “It’s too bad because we thought we were going to do better than that in qualifying but we’ll see what we have in the race.”

Frisselle will look to make a move forward once the green flag waves as he returns to the familiar twists and turns of the historic Watkins Glen road course that took him to victory lane in 2008.

The Canadian Tire 200 is set to go green Saturday, August 13 at 6:00 PM (ET) with SPEED carrying live race coverage.

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (10 August 2011) –Well that didn’t take too long. Just weeks after making his first ever Rolex Sports Car Series GT Class start with Turner Motorsport, Michael Marsal was invited back to once again steer the No. 93 BMW M3 GT class machine as GRAND-AM returns to Watkins Glen this weekend. Adding to the expectations is the fact that he’ll have a familiar face in pit lane as he is rejoined with co-driver Joey Hand.

The GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Series may be taking a month long break before the season finale in September, but Michael Marsal will be back in race action this weekend as he makes his fourth Rolex Series start of the season, co-driving with Hand in the No. 93 Turner Motorsports BMW for the Watkins Glen 200.

The Watkins Glen event will mark Marsal’s second start in the No. 93 BMW as he was drafted to join Memo Gidley and Peter Bassett at New Jersey Motorsports Park when the trio went on to score a 10th place result under blisteringly hot race conditions.

Although this will be Marsal’s first start on the Watkins Glen 2.45-mile short course, Marsal is no stranger to the historic Watkins Glen circuit having finished second in last year’s Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race on the track’s longer 3.4-mile course. Marsal also made his second-career Rolex Series start on the Watkins Glen long course when he joined Racers Edge Motorsports earlier this year in the No. 30 Mazda RX-8 to finish 12th in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen along with Eric Lux and Ari Straus.

“It’s great to be back with Turner Motorsport and have Joey (Hand) with me in the GT car this weekend,” said Marsal. “The more laps I get in the car, the more comfortable I feel so I’m excited to be back behind the wheel of the No. 93. I had so few laps in the car before jumping in during the race, that I’m really looking forward to getting some more seat time in the GT and getting more comfortable with it. Having Joey available for the weekend makes it all the better and I’m really looking forward to it.”

The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series will share the track with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this weekend with Rolex Series practice and qualifying set for Friday, August 12. The two-hour race is set to begin on Saturday at 6:00 PM (ET) with live coverage of the event to be carried on SPEED channel.

NEW RIGHTS AGREEMENT WILL KEEP INDIANAPOLIS 500 ON ABC THROUGH 2018

ABC to be exclusive broadcast network partner for IZOD IndyCar Series

INDIANAPOLIS, Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011 – A Memorial Day weekend television tradition will continue with a new, six-year rights agreement that will keep the Indianapolis 500 on ABC through 2018, extending one of the longest-running relationships between a sporting event and a television network past the half-century mark.

ESPN on ABC will broadcast the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race for the 48th consecutive year on May 27, 2012, and, with the new agreement taking effect in 2013, also will televise the 100th running of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” in 2016.

As part of the new agreement, ABC will be the exclusive broadcast network partner for the IZOD IndyCar Series from 2013-18 and will continue to televise four races each year in addition to the Indianapolis 500. The worldwide presence of the Indianapolis 500 and the series on television will continue as ESPN also has international syndication rights for all IZOD IndyCar Series races.

“The Indianapolis 500 and ABC have been together since 1965, and we are very proud to extend the relationship with this new agreement,” said George Bodenheimer, president of ESPN and ABC Sports. “The 500 is a uniquely American event and a Memorial Day tradition, and we especially look forward to televising the 100th edition of the race in 2016.”

The Indianapolis 500 aired as part of ABC’s “Wide World of Sports” from 1965 until 1971, when it was broadcast for the first time as a same-day, stand-alone, tape-delayed telecast in prime time. It was shown on a delayed basis until the first live telecast in 1986. This past May, ESPN’s production of the Indianapolis 500 telecast used 64 high definition cameras, a satellite-activated effects system and more of the most modern television technology available.

Beginning in 2012, ABC’s coverage of the Indianapolis 500 and the IZOD IndyCar Series will be expanded to include live streaming of ABC’s onboard cameras on ESPN3.com, ESPN’s signature broadband sports network. The streaming also will be available to ESPN3 subscribers via www.indycar.com.

“We value our partnership with ABC and ESPN and are pleased that the relationship will continue into the future,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and CEO. “Along with a vast understanding of the Indianapolis 500 and the sport of INDYCAR racing, ABC’s production team continues to seek out innovative ways to televise our sport. As broadcast technology advances and opportunities arise to implement new technology, we can count on ABC and ESPN to bring the best quality production to our viewers.”

ABC has televised IZOD IndyCar Series races every year since the formation of the series in 1996 and has aired five races each year under the current agreement, which began in 2009 and runs through the 2012 season.

“INDYCAR is very excited about our continued relationship with ABC,” said Randy Bernard, CEO, INDYCAR. “This allows the series long-term growth on the network. This new contract also helps us expand our presence around the world with ESPN representing our international rights. I want to thank ABC for their strong confidence and commitment in our brand and series. This deal will help our series, team owners, sponsors and fans for the long term with a much more solid foundation.”

The next IZOD IndyCar Series race airing on ABC will be at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H., at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday, Aug. 14.

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (10 August 2011) – As the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series returns to Watkins Glen International for the Watkins Glen 200 and Round 10 of the 2011 season, Brian Frisselle heads back to the track that saw him score his second-career GRAND-AM victory.

While driving for AIM Autosport with co-driver Mark Wilkins on the Watkins Glen “short-course”, the duo dominated the 2008 event by starting from the pole and leading a race-high 79 laps en route to the win.

Frisselle and Doran Racing co-driver Henri Richard return to the famed facility this weekend after finishing sixth earlier in the year when the series competed on the track’s longer 3.4-mile circuit in the fabled 6 Hours of the Glen. GRAND-AM shares the track with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series this weekend, and Frisselle hopes to turn the team’s luck around on the Watkins Glen 2.45-mile short course. The team suffered a disappointing result in the previous round at New Jersey Motorsports Park when the cooling system in the No. 77 failed while the team battled sweltering race conditions under record high temperatures.

Rolex Series plans ‘triple crown’ of endurance races

Grand-Am plans to link together its biggest Rolex Sports Car Series endurance races–Daytona International Speedway, Watkins Glen International and Indianapolis Motor Speedway–in a triple crown mini-championship, perhaps as early as 2012.

Grand-Am boss Tom Bledsoe explained that the confirmation of next year’s three-hour race on the Indianapolis road course, during the same weekend as NASCAR’s Brickyard 400, was the catalyst for the idea. He said that the triple crown, which would have its own prize fund and points structure, could become a reality next season.

“It is something that made sense now that we have three such iconic tracks on our schedule,” he said. “It is something that we would like to accomplish in 2012 on a pro-am basis and on a full basis in 2013.”

Bledsoe explained that he hopes the triple crown will encourage extra entries from existing teams and also those not wishing to partake in the full schedule, as the Rolex24 at Daytona already does.

Wayne Taylor, who runs the front-running SunTrust Racing Daytona Prototype team, said, “A triple crown is a great idea, but I’m sure that if we or a team like Ganassi were to enter an extra car it would have to be with an all-pro line-up of drivers.” AutoWeek

SPORTSCAR: 5 Questions With BMW’s Jens Marquardt
BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt discusses GRAND-AM, DTM and future GT involvement…

While BMW has been recently making a name for itself in the American Le Mans Series, the Bavarian manufacturer has also gained a strong presence in GRAND-AM, both with its Dinan-tuned engines in Daytona Prototype and customer support in the Rolex GT and Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge ranks.

With new DP regulations on the horizon, a recent push for GT3-based cars into the GT category and continued talks of a U.S. DTM championship, SPEED.com caught up with new BMW’s Jens Marquardt to get his thoughts on a wide range of topics.

Marquardt took helm as BMW Motorsport director on July 1, following the retirement of Dr. Mario Theissen. The 44-year-old German is no stranger to U.S. motorsports, having worked for Illmor Engineering on development of its Formula One and CART engines in the late ‘90s before joining Toyota’s Formula One program in 2000.

BMW’s GT3-spec Z4 car has become a popular choice for customer teams in Europe. Could it hit the U.S. shores soon? (Photo: John Dagys)

DAGYS: There has been a big push in GRAND-AM recently to adopt GT3-based cars into the series’ Rolex GT category. Do you see that as a possibility for the BMW Z4?

MARQUARDT: If that is done in a balanced way, so those cars can be competitive, I think there’s no reason why that shouldn’t be the case. It’s obviously something that we’d have to look how to properly support from Munich and from our people at BMW of North America.

It would be important to make the private teams running them gain a proper level of support. The Z4 is, from a racing car point of view, a car that’s on a very high level and not just an easy plug-and-play racecar. It needs some technical support from our side, which we’d be happy to give. But we would need to make sure we could organize it in an appropriate way.

I think we have a very good relationship with the people at GRAND-AM. We’re working on those things with them. I’m sure we’ll find a solution to bring those very exciting cars over. But as I said, we need to make sure they’re competitive and can win and at the same time provide the level of support that’s required.

DAGYS: Does GRAND-AM’s new DPG3 platform, which will allow for manufacturer-specific bodywork, interest BMW?

MARQUARDT: Honestly, if it’s a prototype, then the prototype is OK for us in the end. I think at the moment, it’s clear that the powerplant is a BMW and I think that the marketing message is coming across well. I feel that the product is stronger if you look at a car like the M3 GT2, which is based on the car you can have on the street. Therefore, I feel that is the better story to be told rather than a prototype resembling a street car.

I feel that with what Riley is producing and the way GRAND-AM is approaching the whole thing in that your aerodynamics will be balanced. So whatever shape you have, it won’t be an advantage or disadvantage one way or another. It will probably come down to a commercial view on the whole thing.

What’s been a clear message from the board of directors back in Munich is that whatever activities we have, it’s really something that should be production car-based. So [the focus is] our works efforts in the DTM as well as the GT program is based on M3s or Z4s. That’s the story we want to tell and was part of the reason why BMW decided to withdraw from Formula One.

DAGYS: What is your viewpoint on the proposed U.S. DTM championship?

MARQUARDT: From what I understand from [DTM organizers] ITR’s side, talks are really going well and there has been progress made. But where they exactly stand, I honestly don’t know. I think the plan will still be to find an agreement that those cars could be racing in the U.S. in 2013, which I think would be great.
1085141_article_img_large3.jpg
BMW took the wraps off its new M3 DTM challenger last month. The car will debut in next year’s European-based championship, alongside new-look cars from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. (Photo: BMW)

The cars are spectacular and the series is run quite well over in Europe. I feel that being able to attract a premium U.S. manufacturer into the championship, and maybe somebody from Japan, like Lexus, would make this whole thing a very good premium road car racing series. It’s something the race fans in the U.S. would appreciate very much.

DAGYS: Do you feel that the success of a U.S. DTM series could hinge on factory involvement from Audi and Mercedes-Benz in addition to BMW?

MARQUARDT: I think the American market is equally important to all three of us. In that respect, I think we’re all thinking in the same way about the series coming to the U.S. Audi has their LMP1 cars racing here every once in a while. Mercedes will have an American F1 Grand Prix in Austin next year. But those are essentially one-off races for both of them.

I think the brand awareness with a product like DTM… is just much stronger if you have a season-long series in a market like the U.S. Sebring is big event for Audi, but for the rest of the year they disappear. I think the awareness you get from a series that’s run here and hopefully in the end run with the likes of Cadillac and Lexus, overall makes it a much better and stronger package.

DAGYS: Could a BMW U.S. DTM program run in parallel with a GT effort in America?

MARQUARDT: Depending if we had the M3 showcased in DTM and a GT program more based on the Z4, then it probably could be an option. Having privateers and customer-based teams running in GT, where we’d have a more works-supported on the DTM side [is an option]. I think the overall brand awareness is what counts. In the end, what we all want to achieve is to make the brand and dynamics of BMW brought to the fans.

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (11 August 2011) – Burt Frisselle rejoins AIM Autosport this weekend as he returns to GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series competition behind the wheel of the No. 61 GAMMA88 Daytona Prototype with co-driver Mark Wilkins at Watkins Glen International for Round 10 of the 12-race championship.

Frisselle returns to AIM Autosport after having joined Doran Racing in the previous round of Rolex Series competition at New Jersey Motorsports Park along with his brother Brian and co-driver Henri Richard. The experienced Colorado driver has jumped from different chassis and motor combinations throughout the season, having also raced for Action Express Racing twice this year.

But every time out and no matter what his driver suit looks like, Frisselle has been quickly up to speed in each race despite the challenge of adapting to the differences of each car.

The New Jersey round did not yield the results the Frisselles had anticipated when the cooling system on the No. 77 Doran Racing machine malfunctioned on one of the hottest Rolex Series race weekends on record, but Frisselle returns to a track this weekend that has brought him success in the past. Frisselle landed on the podium with a second place result in his debut at the New York track’s 2.45-mile short course in 2004 and the No. 61 AIM Autosport Daytona Prototype started from the front row in last year’s Watkins Glen “short course” event before contact with a competitor saw Frisselle and Wilkins finish a disappointing 11th place.

AIM Autosport Revved Up For Watkins Glen

Stopping at Go Canada Go Rally on Way to Race

Woodbridge, Ont. (August 9, 2011) — After missing two races since their outing at Road America in June, AIM Autosport’s Daytona Prototype team is excited to be racing at this weekend’s Watkins Glen 200 at Watkins Glen International in New York. Thanks to continued sponsorship from GAMMA88, the team will be entering at least two more races this season, Watkins Glen on Saturday and Montréal one week later.

Despite competing in only about half of this year’s races, AIM has managed to field a competitively quick car, but two fourth-place finishes amid several disappointing finishes has left the team short on points. Returning to Watkins Glen, a great track that’s fairly close to home and where AIM has won in the past, has the team in an enthusiastic state. The AIM Autosport BMW-Riley sponsored by GAMMA88 is undergoing final preparation before being shipped out on Wednesday.

On the way to Watkins Glen, the car will be displayed at the Go Canada Go Rally being hosted by Team CMS at 3 West Sports Bar & Grill in Fort Erie from 4–8pm on August 10. Driver Mark Wilkins will be on hand to chat with fans and sign autographs.

“I am very excited to be back in the AIM autosport GAMMA88 car,” said driver, Burt Frisselle. “It’s wonderful to return to action at a ‘The Glen’ where AIM has a history of success! Mark and I have been training hard and we’re focused on getting the best result we can. We know it will be a challenge, but history has proven that Ian and the crew will give us a car to fight at the front.”
