LEXINGTON, Ohio, 16 September – When it counted most, the Rum Bum Racing squad stepped up to the plate and got a hit.

Nick Longhi qualified the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing BMW M3 in the fourth position for tomorrow’s season-ending GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge EMCO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank. Earlier in the day, the squad was troubled by the handling behavior of the No. 13 machine.

Yet after a thorough diagnosis, a series of adjustments brought the car back to its usual sweet spot allowing Longhi to crack off a lap at 1:31.533 sec. around the 2.258-mile length of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

“It’s all down to the team and (crew chief) Joe Varde. These guys never quit,” said Longhi. “We weren’t in a good place after the first practice this morning and there was not one thing that was the root cause. We got together and prioritized what we could accomplish before qualifying, which ended up being a host of refinements here and there across the car. So, when I went out, from the first lap, the car felt great, and I immediately had the confidence to push hard. I made a small mistake on my best lap, so we may have been a place higher, but the Mustangs and Camaros are hard to beat over one lap. I think we’ll be in better shape over the race distance though.”

The Rum Bum squad knew from the start that they had the GS Class M3 dialed when Longhi opened the 30-minute session with a lap at 1:32.453 sec., good enough for fourth quick. His next trip across the start-finish line lowered the mark to 1:31.533 sec., which set pole at the time. Eventually a pair of Mustangs would usurp his time dropping Longhi to third place. Two more successive laps at 1:31.7 and 1.31.6 sec. fell just short of his best time. Still, it appeared Longhi would hold on to the inside of row 2 until the No. 01 Camaro squeaked in by a going a tenth of a second faster. Thus, No. 13 Rum Bum Racing machine starts on the outside of row two, with Longhi’s best lap ultimately only three tenths of a second adrift of pole.

“We definitely struggled through the test and practice to get the balance right on the car. But, in the end we got right, as Nick proved with a great qualifying run to make us the best BMW, which is always what we aim for. The Mustangs and Camaros are really fast around here, but it will be interesting to see if they can maintain that pace over a race distance. Everyone is so close that it’s going to be nose-to-tail all race,” said Longhi’s co-driver Matt Plumb.

“To be on the podium tomorrow is going to be a matter of survival with all the traffic and with the ST Class cars as fast as we are through large sections of this track, it’s going to make for a very difficult race. There’ll be a lot of cautions, I think. So being lucky and getting your strategy aligned with the yellows will be key to hold track position until the last 30 minutes and then, it will be a straight fight to the finish,” added Plumb.

The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race gets underway Saturday, September 17th at 11:00 AM eastern time. Follow the action on live timing and scoring at grand-am.com.

Lexington, Oh (16 September 2011) – Matt Bell broke his own track record in qualifying for the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race on Friday with a fast lap time of 1:32.120-seconds around the 2.258-mile natural terrain circuit. Unfortunately, the time, which was a marked improvement over his 2010 mark of 1:33.635-seconds, will only net him 17th on the grid for Saturday’s season-finale race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Bell, who with co-driver John Edwards, will look to pursue a third race win on the season, although he knows that the challenge will be significant after a disappointing qualifying session.

“The Stevenson guys will go back and look at every possible element and go through all the data to see what is going on with the car,” said Bell. “We have lost some time this weekend with some breakages on the car, so we kind of started one day behind everyone else today. I’m not sure what our direction will be, because it wasn’t like there was an obvious issue.”

Having started the Road America race from 11th before breaking through to score the first ever win for the Camaro in GRAND-AM, Bell knows that qualifying is just one element of the race weekend.

“We just have to see what we can find with the car, and make some decisions about what we need to do to improve tomorrow,” said Bell. “ We have a warm up in the morning, and that will be another chance to work on it and hopefully we can come up with some thing that will help us move forward tomorrow. We started pretty far back and still won at Road America, so hopefully we can use that script again tomorrow!”

Race coverage will broadcast September 25 at 1:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Rum Bum Racing Tests at Mid-Ohio Show Team Is On Target

Rum Bum Racing Tests at Mid-Ohio Show Team Is On Target

You can follow Rum Bum Racing on Facebook:

LEXINGTON, Ohio, 15 September – Completing a day of pre-race testing at the Mid-Ohio Sports Course, Rum Bum Racing affirmed they are on target for a front-running performance when the final round of the 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge finale gets underway in earnest tomorrow, September 16. Following three separate test sessions, where the No. 13 BMW M3 finished among the three fastest in the second session, drivers Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi shared the workload experimenting with a variety of set-up combinations.

Despite the nearly two month layoff since the last round in New Jersey, neither driver found it difficult to get back in the saddle.

“Both Nick and I have plenty of laps around here at Mid-Ohio, so it’s not like we need to shake off any cobwebs,” said Plumb. “We tried a variety of set ups today just to see what’s working and what’s not,” Plumb continued. “A big difference today from when we were here last year in June is the temperature. Back then, the temperature was in the 80’s whereas today we barely got above 60 (degrees Fahrenheit). So we are experiencing some different reactions from the car, but that’s why these test sessions are so key. We can test a variety of set ups without fear of failure and we accumulate data that will help us enormously when it counts tomorrow. That being said, so have all the other teams, so we’ll find out tomorrow who was able to make the best use of their data.”

The team also carried out numerous tire change practice stops giving new crew member, Joe Hall, some time to integrate into the team’s well-oiled pit stop mechanism.

Competition officially gets underway for the EMCO Gears Classic presented by Key Bank on Friday, September 16, with two practice sessions at 8:45 AM and 1:30 PM eastern respectively.

Qualifying for Saturday’s 2.5 hour race is set for 3:45 PM eastern. Follow all the action on live timing and scoring at grand-am.com.

Lexington, Ohio (14 September 2011) – Michael Marsal returns to race action this weekend for the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course as both the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge conclude their 2011 championships at the 2.258-mile road course.

Marsal has a busy weekend ahead of him as he will once again pull double duty by closing out the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season in the No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 and also make his fifth Rolex Series GT start as he drives the No. 93 Turner Motorsport BMW entry for the third time this season.

With five top-10 finishes in Continental Tire Challenge competition this year, Marsal is currently ninth in the Driver Points and hopes to follow up a 10th place effort at New Jersey with another strong run in the No. 97 BMW at Mid-Ohio.

Marsal will see a full day of racing on Saturday with the 2.5-hour Continental Tire race set for an 11:00 AM (ET) start followed by the 2.75-hour Rolex Series race at 3:00 PM (ET). Marsal looks to make the most of the final Rolex Series race of the year and will be joined by team owner Will Turner, who will strap into the Rolex car for the first time.

“I’m very excited for the upcoming weekend at Mid-Ohio,” said Marsal. “It will be a busy one between running both series, but I’m very happy that Will (Turner) invited me back to close out the season in GT – and it will be extra exciting to share the driving duties with him for the first time! The Turner Motorsport BMWs have proven to be strong all season and hopefully we can finish off the year with solid finishes in both categories.”

Marsal will participate in a promoter test day on Thursday, September 15 followed by practice and qualifying on Friday. The Continental Tire race begins at 11:00 AM (ET) on Saturday and can be followed with live timing and scoring at www.grand-am.com. The Rolex Series race is slated for a 3:00 PM (ET) start time with SPEED carrying love coverage of the event.

Lola T70 Chevrolet that propelled Penske to first Rolex 24 triumph will join the 50th Anniversary overall champions display

Donohue, Parsons drove the famed No. 6 to a win in the 1969 Rolex 24

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 6 Lola T70 Chevrolet fielded by legendary car owner Roger Penske and driven to victory in the 1969 Rolex 24 At Daytona by Mark Donohue and Chuck Parsons will join the display of past overall Rolex 24 At Daytona championship cars to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the twice-around-the-clock challenge on January 28-29.

The victory was the first for Chevrolet in an international endurance race and also the first time Penske celebrated a triumph at Daytona International Speedway.

The No. 6 Lola T70 Chevrolet joins the growing field of prestigious championship cars in the display:

· The No. 96 Arciero Racing Lotus-Climax 19B from the inaugural Rolex 24 (then known as the Daytona Continental) in 1962
· The Porsche 907 from the 1968 Rolex 24
· The No. 98 Eagle GTP from the 1993 Rolex 24
· The Preston Henn Porsches from the 1983 and 1985 Rolex 24s.

Additional cars will be announced in the coming months as they are secured to be part of this one-of-a-kind display.

Race strategy was the key to victory in the 1969 Rolex 24 for the No. 6 Lola T70 of Donohue and Parsons, who was a last-minute replacement in the car for injured Ronnie Bucknum. Entering the race, Penske believed the difference in winning would be attrition and directed his drivers to run a conservative pace.

Penske made the right call.

Despite the No. 6 Lola T70 experiencing a wide-range of problems from a fuel pick-up issue to exhaust system and starter motor failures, Penske’s drivers were the last men standing as accidents and mechanical failures took out the pre-race favorites such as the Porsche 908s and Ford GT40s.

Despite having to spend a combined two hours, 10 minutes and 12 seconds in the pits on 31 stops, the No. 6 Lola T70 won by a margin of 30 laps and covered 626 laps, 2,382.63 miles.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona, the kick-off event to Speedweeks 2012 as well as the international motorsports calendar, showcases the world’s best drivers competing against each other lap after lap for 24 hours on Daytona International Speedway’s challenging and demanding 3.56-mile road course.

Tickets for the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona are on sale online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP.

Burrows and Hopwood Set For Mid-Ohio Finale

Columbus, Oh- 14 September 2011-Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood have been restless the last few weeks as the championship duo have counted down the days ahead of this weekend’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season finale at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Burrows has kept himself from boarding his flight to Ohio early by cranking out the miles on his road bike to keep fit, as well as making a quick tour of Iceland, making a visit to his old home town to take in the Baltimore Grand Prix , and spending some quality time pulling crab traps in Maryland with his driving mentor, Bob Dotson (www.twitter.com/Wattabout1).

And for his part, Hopwood made the most of the long break by playing cheerleader while his wife Casey delivered a healthy new Patriots fan into the world as Charlotte Elizabeth Hopwood was born on September 2.

The Mid-Ohio weekend is one that many have been anxious to get started, as mere points separate the top contenders in several championship categories, including the sister No. 10 machine for Team and Driver Championships. and not least considerable Kia’s opportunity to show well in the Manufacturer Championship in just its second season of North American racing.

The weekend will also feature the strong in-person support of a rousing Kia contingent as the nascent motorsports program continues to grow in awareness and activation.

The Mid-Ohio locale is one that has featured a little bit of everything for Burrows and Hopwood through the years, from Burrows starting the race on the front row to Hopwood putting on an amazing display of car control to keep from crashing despite losing a wheel on the flat out fastest segment of the track.

“This is a big weekend for everyone involved with this program,” said Hopwood, who made his second-ever GRAND-AM race start at Mid-Ohio in 2006. “There is a lot on the line for Kinetic and Kia with this championship and hopefully it turns out to be a successful race. We also want to move the 12 car as far up in the team standings as well to finish the year on an upswing. This is a fun track but we’ve had some tough luck here through the years so we’ll just look for a good run, start to finish.”

“It seems like it’s been forever since we raced in the huge heat of New Jersey in July,” said Burrows. “Trevor’s gone off and become a father, and the temperature should be much more reasonable this weekend. It’s amazing how close everything is with this championship, but that’s the way it was when we won and it is typical Continental Tire Challenge close competition. I know the Kinetic guys are really looking forward to getting this weekend going and I for one can’t wait to get back to racing, especially at a place like Mid-Ohio. We are looking forward to the weekend and hoping the Nic and Kia can score a very big trophy.”

Tim Bell Looks Forward to Mid-Ohio Finale

Tim Bell Looks Forward to Mid-Ohio Finale

Ready to “graduate” from a strong rookie season in GRAND-AM….

Media Contact: Matt Cleary, Sunday Group Management
Media@sundaymanagement.com
317-908-2975

Lexington, Ohio (14 September 2011) – Like a student getting his scores back from his last final exam and confirming that he will soon be picking up a diploma, Tim Bell is looking forward to graduating from his rookie year of pro racing as the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge stages the final race of the season this weekend at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car course.

Throughout the 2011 championship campaign, Bell has delivered impressive performances at race tracks around the country. Nearly every race meeting saw Bell learning a new track for the first time on Friday and then returning to race on it come Saturday.

As Bell prepares for the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio, he enters the final race of the season fourth in the MESCO Building For The Future Rookie of the Year Award standings, having amassed six top-15 finishes in the first nine races. The highlight of the year came in April when the California racer stood on the podium in only his third GRAND-AM start after he and Doran Racing co-driver BJ Zacharias drove the No. 14 Office Depot BMW 128i to a second place finish at Barber Motorsports Park.

Bell’s two most recent race outings have yielded strong results – finishing eighth in his home race at Laguna Seca before nearly scoring a second consecutive top-10 result when he finished 11th at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Bell looks to carry this momentum into the final event and hopes for another strong run at the front of the field.

The New Jersey round saw teams battle extremely hot and humid conditions as the Garden State faced an intense heat wave, but with Ohio temperatures predicted to be in the mid-60s for the final round of 2011 competition, teams and drivers will welcome the much cooler race conditions.

“I’ve never been to Mid-Ohio before so I’m excited to get going,” said Bell. “It’s been a long break and I’m eager to get back behind the wheel. The Office Depot BMW can out-brake just about everybody out there, so I definitely think we have a great chance for another good run this weekend.”

With a nearly two-month long break between the New Jersey and Mid-Ohio rounds, Bell has spent time using an iRacing simulator in order to familiarize himself with the Mid-Ohio circuit in preparation for his first visit to the 2.258-mile, 13-turn challenging Ohio road course.

“Working with a car in its first season of racing has proven to have some drawbacks, but I know that being a part of that process–even when it has sometimes been frustrating–will make me a more complete driver in the end. But of course, you are hungry to have good results every time out, so hopefully that is the way we can finish the season. Being in Ohio, this is Doran Racing’s home track and it’d be great to bring the guys another strong result because they’ve worked so hard, all year long. I think it’s going to be a very fun place to race.”

Bell will take to the track for the first time on Thursday, September 15 for a promoter test day. Official practice and qualifying will take place on Friday with the EMCO Gears Classic set to begin at 11:00 AM (ET) Saturday, September 17. The 2.5-hour race can be followed online with live timing and scoring at www.grand-am.com.

SPEED will air the race on Sunday, September 25 at 12:00 PM (ET).

Burt and Brian Frisselle Target Strong Season Finish in Home Race for Doran Racing

Burt and Brian Frisselle Target Strong Season Finish in Home Race for Doran Racing

Burt was recently in action at Mid-Ohio, taking to the track for Continental Tire to give some media guests, contest winners, VIP’s, and Contintnal Tire dealers a very special lap of Mid-Ohio. As it turned out, Burt was also a driver coach and then reluctant rider as SPEED Channel’s Brian Till took him for a ride in the DP at Mid-Ohio:

Lexington, Ohio (14 September 2011) – Burt and Brian Frisselle return to GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series competition this weekend for the EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course as the brothers join together in the No. 77 Doran Racing Office Depot Ford-Dallara in the final race of the 2011 season.

The Frisselles first raced together at the 2.258-mile road course in 2005 while driving for Synergy Racing and started the Mid-Ohio event ninth and finished seventh. Since then, the brothers have competed against one another in the Rolex Series – each having driven for a variety of different teams throughout the years.

Both have had increasingly strong results at Mid-Ohio with Burt scoring the third starting spot in both 2009 and 2010 while driving for AIM Autosport. He scored his best finish at the track last year when he and co-driver Mark Wilkins stood on the podium with a third place result. Brian, who has qualified in the top-five in the last three Mid-Ohio events, matched his best Mid-Ohio finish of fourth in last year’s EMCO Gears Classic while driving for Michael Shank Racing.

Burt and Brian last joined forces when Burt was drafted by Doran Racing as a relief driver for the team earlier this year in the New Jersey round when the area experience extremely hot and humid conditions.

Burt has driven for three different teams this year and despite having to adapt to the different engine and chassis combinations has collected four top-five results – including three fourth place finishes.

“I’m very excited to join Doran Racing again and to close out the year with Brian,” said Burt. “The team has not had the best racing luck so far this year so hopefully we can give them a great result to finish out the season. I always love coming back to Mid-Ohio and after finishing on the podium last year, it makes me all the more excited to get back out there and go for another one. I want to thank Henri Richard for this opportunity, and we are looking forward to getting going.”

Brian has faced some unfortunate racing luck throughout the 2011 season, but drove to a season-best fifth place finish at Virginia International Raceway. He hopes to capture another solid result in Saturday’s 2.75-hour race.

“I’m really looking forward to returning to Mid-Ohio,” said Brian of the season finale. “We’ve had some tough luck with some small things that have just kept Doran Racing from bringing home the results that this team is capable of, but hopefully we can turn that around this weekend in front of Doran Racing’s home crowd. It’s always great to be racing with Burt because our driving styles are so similar, so hopefully we can deliver Doran Racing a great end to the season with a good result.”

Together, the duo look to use their combined experience and knowledge of the 13-turn Mid-Ohio road course to make another run for the podium as the 2011 season comes to a close.

The EMCO Gears Classic weekend begins with practice and qualifying on Friday, September 15. The 2.75-hour race is set for a 3:00 PM (ET) start time on Saturday with SPEED carrying live coverage of the event.

Matt Bell Ready to Run Up Front Again at Mid-Ohio

Matt Bell Ready to Run Up Front Again at Mid-Ohio

lagunapodiummbell

Lexington, Ohio (14 September 2011) – Following an eight-week break in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition, Matt Bell returns to race action this weekend as the series stages the season finale at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

The California racer has shown his prowess behind the wheel of the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro throughout the first nine rounds of the season, qualifying the car in the the top-10 – including a pole position at his home track of Laguna Seca – in all but one event this year (but he still went on to win that race). Bell is setting his sights on a similar performance this weekend as he closes out the 2011 season.

And there could hardly be a better track for Bell as he looks for his third win of the year, because the 2.258-mile natural terrain circuit in rural Ohio has been one that Bell has shown mastery on for years. Bell broke the GS track record in 2009 on his way to pole position in his first GS start at the track. Last year, Bell backed that up with an encore pole on his way to bringing the Camaro its first-ever laps led in GRAND-AM competition.

A lap of Mid-Ohio on Continental Tires with Brian Till

Brian Till – Lap of Mid-Ohio on Continental Tires

With experience racing in everything from the Indianapolis 500 to the Rolex 24 at Daytona, SPEED Analyst Brian Till is no mere talking head. Calling the SPEED Channel coverage of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge as well as the Rolex Sports Car Series, Till brings his experience to bear week in and week out.

And when it comes to Mid-Ohio, there is likely no better person to talk about the track. Why? Because as the Head Instructor for the Mid-Ohio Sports Car School, Till has trained thousands of drivers on how to make the most of every corner on the 2.258-mile circuit.

Even though his duties for SPEED see him on site at tracks across the country nearly every weekend, it has been a little while since the racer-turned-instructor and broadcaster actually donned a helmet and took to the track in anger.

But thanks to Continental Tire, that is exactly what he did as he strapped in to the Continental Tire Daytona Prototype at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The car was the same Dallara-Ford combination that was raced by NASCAR Drivers AJ Allmendinger and Michael McDowell as well as IndyCar star Justin Wilson in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Till first got a feel for what to expect when he was strapped in as a passenger, with Burt Frisselle wheeling him around for a few fast laps. Then, it was Till’s turn to run as he took to the track to get his first ever laps behind the wheel of a Continental Tire-shod Daytona Prototype on a track that he knows well. After he pulled off the helmet, Till sat down to talk us through a lap of the track on Continental Tires, as well as how his experience gives him a whole new point of view–that of the drivers.

“Coming out of the carousel, you have the pits to your left, and you move up from second up to fourth gear before dropping down to third. And you head to Turn 1 which is the highest speed corner on the race track but in a Daytona Prototype in these Continental Tires the turn in is great and I was amazed with how quickly you can pick the throttle back up well before the apex and drive the car aggressively off towards the track and then up to the key hole.

“It’s up to fourth gear through there and the longitudinal G’s in this car and the braking G’s are pretty phenomenal, especially for the lack of downforce the Daytona Prototype inherently has. You can go almost to the 2 marker under braking into the Keyhole which is pretty darn late.
