Kershaw, SC (26 March 2012) – Walldinger Racing scholarship winner Kyle Kirkwood claimed two podium finishes and four top-10s as he made his WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series debut at the Zoom Zoom Nationals held this weekend at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. Kirkwood was a busy racer on the weekend, competing in both the Komet Jr. Heavy and Yamaha Jr. Lite events under the watchful guidance of Walldinger Racing Team Manager Tim Pappas.

Each class holds qualifying, with those times setting the order for a pre-Final sprint, which in turn then marks the grid for the all-important Final event.

After qualifying third to net a second row start for the Komet Jr. Pre-Final, the class made two failed attempts at a green flag start and per WKA rules, when the leaders cannot bring the field to the green at the proper speed and in correct formation, the second row is moved up to the front to lead the class to the start.

So, in just his first WKA Manufacturer’s Cup event, Kirkwood quickly found himself leading 34 karts to the green flag. The young racer was up to the task, and used the inside line to his advantage as he maintained first place to lead the first lap of the race.

Unrelenting pressure saw him eventually cede the lead, but a clean and consistent run netted a second place finish with the No. 29 Arrow machine for the Floridian, which landed him on the outside pole for the start of the 12-lap Final.

Making his first WKA final appearance, Kirkwood didn’t have the start that he wanted, dropping to fourth after the opening lap, but was back up to third the next time by. The top-four karts would run nose-to-tail throughout the following laps and just before the ½ way point, Kirkwood made a pass into Turn 5 to take over the second position. He stayed glued to the bumper of the leader for the rest of the race and would finish second to claim a podium result in just his first WKA Manufacturer’s Cup event.

Meanwhile, Kirkwood jumping back into the Yamaha Junior Lite division for qualifying, Kirkwood took the outside pole with a time of 51.389-seconds in a very competitive class of 40 karts. The Pre-Final race saw Kirkwood run as low as ninth before making a strong close and finishing sixth, netting a row 3 start for the Final.

The start of the Final saw Kirkwood make a great start, moving into fourth place by Turn 4. The top-six karts would run close together as the pack developed a gap over the rest of the 40-kart field. Kirkwood despite holding on to fourth for much of the race, it was not to be another podium for Kirkwood as he ultimately finished sixth at the checkered flag.
Having shown well on Saturday, Kirkwood hoped for similar results on Sunday as he campaigned both the the Komet Jr. Lite and Yamaha Junior Heavy classes.

Kirkwood was once again off to a fast start – qualifying third on the Komet Jr. Lite grid and finishing fourth in the pre-final to net a row 2 start for the Final.
Kirkwood had another great start in the Final, moving up to third before getting a rude introduction to the often rough and tumble WKA karting ranks as he was punted off track and fell to 17th. Showing great poise and determination behind the wheel of the No. 29 Arrow, Kirkwood stayed focused, returning to the fray to pas his way up to 10th at the finish.

The Yamaha Junior Heavy category would see Kirkwood qualify sixth and start the Pre-Final from the third row. Several karts ended up together in Turn 1 and Kirkwood emerged from the cluster of karts in 11th. Once again having to charge forward, Kirkwood put his head down to run another set of clean, flying laps and worked his way back up to finish sixth.

Starting the Final from the third row, Kirkwood got shuffled back to eighth on the start but drove his No. 29 kart back into the top-five by the third lap. As the first five karts ran in a tight pack and battled for the lead on the final lap of the race, the three karts ahead of Kirkwood got together but the young Florida karter made like Cole Trickle and maneuvered through the melee to claim second place, his second podium result of the weekend.

“I had a lot of fun this weekend,” said Kirkwood of his first WKA Manufacturer’s Cup event. “I had never driven at Kershaw before but it’s a fun track. It is very technical and hard to pass. The Yamaha class was especially fun for me and I’m really looking forward to the next race at BeaveRun. I’m already familiar with the track because I raced there last year so I can’t wait until the next one.”

The WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series next travels to BeaveRun Motorsports Complex in Wampum, Pennsylvania May 4-6.

Marsal Looking Ahead to Barber Return

Michael Marsal Looking Ahead to Barber Return

Birmingham, Ala. (26 March 2012) – Michael Marsal returns to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge action this weekend after opening the season at Daytona International Speedway in January. Marsal and co-driver Boris Said return to the seat of the No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW GS for Round 2 of the 2012 championship at Barber Motorsports Park located just outside of Birmingham, Alabama.

The duo kicked off the season with a sixth place result at Daytona and will look to improve on that effort with a podium finish this weekend.

With two top-10 finishes in two GRAND-AM starts at the track, Marsal certainly knows what it takes to run well at Barber. He scored a podium result in his debut at the picturesque facility in 2010 when he drove the Turner BMW to a third place finish with co-driver Joey Hand. The pair returned in 2011 with a run to sixth at the finish.

“Alabama is all about tire maintenance–the track surface is really aggressive on the tires, so patience is key,” said Marsal of the 2.3-mile road course. “After the long break since Daytona, it will be nice to get back in the groove of regular racing starting this weekend. Considering how strong Boris (Said) and I were at Daytona, I expect us to keep the push going this weekend. The two of us have really gelled. We work really well together and I think this will lead to a successful season.”

While the GRAND-AM Series has not convened for race action in over one month, Marsal has remained active as he prepares for a racing season that recently got much busier. In addition to his full-season Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge campaign, Marsal was recently announced as a driver of the No. 20 Lola B09/86-Mazda for Dyson Racing in the American Le Mans Series and will contest six ALMS races this year with co-driver Eric Lux.

“Joining a team like Dyson Racing is an unbelievable opportunity for me,” offered Marsal who recently tested the LMP1 machine at Sebring ahead of his Long Beach debut April 13-14. “I know that stepping up to a prototype is going to be a new challenge, but it is one that I’m very excited about. I’ve tested the car, and the performance is just incredible. I think Eric and I are going to be great co-drivers. Even though the GRAND-AM car is completely different from the prototype, the Barber weekend is a good way to get back to the regular rhythm of the race weekends after this long break. ”

The Barber 200 is set to begin Saturday, March 31 at 5:00 PM (ET). The 2.5-hour race will be televised April 8 at 12:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Charlotte, NC (22 March 2012) – AJ Allmendinger and Walldinger Racing, Inc. are pleased to announce that 13-year-old Kyle Kirkwood has been selected as the inaugural recipient of the Walldinger Racing Karting Scholarship, which will see Kirkwood campaign a full season in the World Karting Association’s Manufacturer’s Cup Series as well as compete at the Rotax Grand Nationals and SKUSA SuperNationals.

As the recipient of numerous scholarships that helped propel his own career, Allmendinger was looking to give back, and created the karting scholarship in order to help a deserving young karter get the support needed to move up through the racing ranks.

Kirkwood, who began racing karts at the age of five, will not only receive support from a fully equipped race team but will also receive valuable media and management training from Walldinger Racing, Allmendinger’s management firm.

Kirkwood has shown great success as he’s claimed several victories and championships throughout his home state of Florida and other various venues around the country. 2012 marks his first year of Junior level competition and he currently competes in the Florida Winter Tour – racing TaG Junior during the Formula Kart weekends and Junior MAX during the MAX Challenge weekends.

“This karting scholarship is an idea I’ve had for a while but the timing was never right,” said Allmendinger. “I wanted to do it this year, and I thought that with everything that happened during the off-season, I feared it would get put on the backburner again, but we were able to make it happen. We’re thrilled to have Kyle on board. He has shown great potential throughout his eight years of karting and maintains a very positive attitude both on and off the track.”

As the winner of the AJ Allmendinger Karting Scholarship, Kirkwood will make his WKA Manufacturer’s Cup debut this weekend at the Zoom Zoom Nationals held at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina under the direction of Walldinger Racing Team Manager Tim Pappas. Kirkwood will contest four categories throughout the weekend: Yamaha Jr. Lite and Komet Jr. Heavy on Saturday as well as Yahama Jr. Heavy and Komet Jr. Lite on Sunday.

“I’m very grateful to have been chosen for this great opportunity,” said Kirkwood. “It is an honor and privilege to represent AJ Allmendinger and Walldinger Racing as the recipient of the scholarship. I’m very excited to race in the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series this year. I feel like I’m heading into my most exciting and prosperous season of karting and I will continue to work hard and do my best in each and every race.”

KartSport and Sparco have joined the effort as partners, with Walldinger Racing media partner Sunday Group Management also confirmed to support the program. Additional entities are also expected to be announced as partners in the coming weeks.

The Kershaw weekend will begin with a full day of official practice on Friday followed by two days of racing on Saturday and Sunday. The race day format begins with qualifying, followed by a Pre-Final and Final.

Positive Prototype Test for Marsal

Positive Prototype Test for Marsal

Follow Marsal at :

Sebring, Fla. March 21, 2012 –Fresh from the announcement that he was joining the American Le Mans Series sprint events in 2012, Michael Marsal geared up for his Long Beach Grand Prix debut with a full day of testing the Dyson Racing No. 20 Lola B09/86-Mazda at Sebring International Raceway this week.

Marsal had previously driven the high power, high downforce machine in a brief test earlier this year, and was eager to build on that experience as he prepares for the demands that the narrow but quick 1.968-mile temporary Long Beach street circuit will put on him and co-driver Eric Lux. The bumpy track surface that makes Sebring such a drivers challenge was ideally suited as Dyson Racing worked to acclimatize the new driver pairing and develop a range of set up strategies for the April 14th event.

“I was pretty pleased with where my times were, and more so with how much we improved through the day,” said Marsal. “Eric (Lux) has a lot more time in prototypes than I do, so he’s a good reference for me and I think we are going to be a good pairing this year. We’ve both come out of GT machines and been friends for years, so it’s exciting for us to be driving together. I think it’s going to bring even more competitiveness out of us both!”

Efficient teamwork and lap after lap reliability of the proven Lola machine saw Marsal and Lux make the most of the track time with a long day of running for Dyson.

“Besides just working on continuing to get more of a feel for the car, the other big thing was to just get to spend some time with the team and work through our changes and get used to how we all approach everything,” said Marsal, who will be completing his college studies this spring. “I was impressed with the Dyson Racing guys-there is a tremendous amount of focus and even though we were ‘just’ testing, everyone was right on top of things and we were able to make a lot of progress.”

The Sebring facility, which was fresh from hosting the huge 60th Anniversary Sebring 12 Hour event, was a fertile feeding ground for thousands of birds, who were feasting on the leftovers from the big event. Marsal hadn’t given the extra attendees much thought, until they made their presence known.

“I was going down toward the hairpin, and had just clicked into sixth gear when I could see the Audi ahead of me come to a complete dead stop, well ahead of the turn. It took everything I had to slow down in time, but thankfully I did because there were what looked like thousands of birds, right on the track and it would have been a mess. That was not what I was expecting!”

Marsal’s busy race schedule will see him next head to Barber Motorsports Park outside of Birmingham, Alabama for the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event March 29-31 before traveling across the country for his ALMS debut on the streets of Long Beach, California April 13-14.

The Barber GRAND-AM event will broadcast April 8 at 12:00 PM (ET) on SPEED and the ALMS Long Beach event will be televised April 14 at 7:30 PM (ET) on ESPN 2.

Busy Weekend For Allmendinger at Auto Club Speedway

Busy Weekend For Allmendinger at Auto Club Speedway

Boys/Girls Club visit, Autograph Session…and a SWAT team

Fontana, CA (21 March 2012) – Between sponsor appearances, team debriefs, and a host of other media appearances including filming for the NASCAR Now’s "Daily Dinger," AJ Allmendinger’s NASCAR Sprint Cup weekends are typically pretty busy. But this weekend’s visit to Auto Club Speedway will see the Penske Racing drivers schedule even more packed than usual, with a wide roster set for the weekend ahead of Sunday’s Auto Club 400.

Things will get off to an adrenaline-filled start with Shiloh Charities and the "Fuel for Success" program on Thursday as Allmendinger is set to participate in a "Hostage Rescue Scenario" with the Colton Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.

The SWAT exercise, which will be held under the guidance of Sgt. Jim Jolliff, will see AJ donning a different uniform as he’ll be fully decked out in SWAT gear, complete with actual SWAT equipment for the exercise. The experience will be even more authentic, as the San Bernadino County helicopter will participate in the exercise.

Immediately after the exercise the helicopter will land, giving the kids the chance to get an close up look at the helicopter as well as the Colton PD SWAT vehicles and equipment. The entire experience is part of the "Fuel for Success" program that Shell has supported for five years.

"Fuel for Success" has eight different law enforcement agencies throughout the United States working together with education leaders and NASCAR drivers to encourage young people to follow their dreams. These mentors share the exciting world of NASCAR Racing with the young participants of the program and expose them to various career options within the racing industry.

After meeting up with representatives from AAA on Thursday, AJ will be part of a NASCAR autograph session on Friday ahead of qualifying. Saturday will see make a suite visit to the Boys and Girls Club in the morning. At lunch, it will be the Dingers Crew Kids time to shine, as the group that won the Shiloh Charities "Food for Success" challenge earlier this year will be at the track, providing lunch to the Penske Racing 2 and 22 teams.

These students from Colton High School will begin their day at the Art Institute of California in San Bernardino. There they will be utilizing the Art Institute’s professional kitchen facilities to prepare the food for the teams before traveling to the track and personally delivering the fruits of their labor.

"I’m looking forward to the Auto Club Speedway weekend–it’s always fun to race in my home state, and hopefully we can have a good run out there" said Allmendinger. "This is a great program that Shiloh Charities has developed, and I’m happy to get invited to be a part of it, and really proud that Shell has been a key supporter for so many years. It should be a lot of fun–really, who wouldn’t want to put the SWAT team gear on?"

The Auto Club 400 will be broadcast on FOX Sunday, March 25 starting at 2:30 PM ET.

About Shiloh Charities
From cities within the United States, to villages in distant lands, we will strive to help women and children improve their daily lives and give them hope for a better and healthier future. In 2012, Shiloh will partner with Shell Oil to inspire young ones across the United States to reach their potential and explore new opportunities.
We hope to help encourage thousands through several carefully designed programs. Shiloh Charities will also continue it’s fifth year with sponsor Shell Oil with the "Fuel For Success" Motor Sports program.

Burt Frisselle Looks to Extend Family’s Winning Legacy at Sebring

pastedGraphic.pdf

Burt Frisselle Looks to Extend Family’s Winning Legacy at Sebring

www.twitter.com/frisselleracing
www.frisselleracing.com

Sebring, Fla. (15 March 2012) – When Burt Frisselle straps in behind the wheel of the No. 06 Soloson Import CORE autosport LMPC this weekend for his first start in the famed 12 Hours of Sebring, he won’t just be going for the win. The sports car ace will also be looking to extend the Frisselle family legacy in the historic event, which is staging its 60th edition to kick off the 2012 American Le Mans Series season (Live Stream ESPN3, Saturday 10:15a, ABC broadcast, Sunday March 18 12:00 PM ET).

A second-generation racer in the Frisselle family, Burt and his brother Brian followed in the racing footsteps of their father Brad, who is a legend in the sports car world with two 12-Hours of Sebring victories to his name. The elder Frisselle began racing SCCA in 1970 and his passion for the sport quickly intensified. By 1974 he was competing professionally as a pesky privateer, taking it to the factory squads. Behind the seriously fun attitude was an equally serious set of skills, and in 1977 Brad stepped up to the IMSA Camel GT class, seeing instant success with a run to second in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

That podium triumph was soon followed by another as he tasted victory in the 12 Hours of Sebring in what was only his second GT class race. He won the 12-Hour endurance event again when he returned to IMSA in 1980 as the number one factory driver for Mazda in the Camel GT series.

“I hate seeing the years connected to those wins–it makes it seem like so long ago now!” laughed Brad, who still is a regular at the race track, offering his insights both on strategy and serving as spotter for his two racing sons Burt and Brian. “I have a lot of great memories from this track, and from this race. The 12 Hour is it’s own monster of an event, and I think this year with the 60th, it’s going to be even bigger. So this is something the whole family is excited about, with Burt getting the call from CORE and making his 12 Hour debut here this weekend.”

So when Burt, who scored an LMPC win in his Petite Le Mans debut in 2010, takes his turn in the 12 Hours of Sebring as ALMS celebrates 60 years of the event, a trip to victory lane would be all the more special for the Frisselles as Burt looks to stand atop the same podium his father did years ago.

“I’m very excited to be racing in the 12 Hour,” said Burt, who opened the year with a run in the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona. “I’ve raced at Sebring before in formula cars, but never in the 12 hour so this is a race that I’ve had on my list for a long time. Of course, with my dad being an overall winner here–no pressure, right?!”

With 64 cars entered, the 60th edition 12 Hour is set to be a busy one on and off the track. With the World Endurance Challenge opening the year along with the ALMS season lid-lifter, the bumpy airport-based track is going to be traffic-intensive. But the multi-class challenge is one that Frisselle relishes as he looks to return to the top of the LMPC podium.

“We always complain about traffic, but I think this weekend is going to be just incredible for the drivers with this field,” said Burt. “I think that being smart is going to be as key as being fast, and even though this is my first run with CORE, I’ve been impressed with the team and hope we can bring home a strong finish on Saturday night.”

With a formula car background and some time working his way up the NASCAR ladder, Burt’s motorsports career has seen him compete largely in the GRAND-AM ranks and with 96 GRAND-AM starts, he is no stranger to endurance racing.

He is also already familiar with winning in ALMS having won the LMPC category in the prestigious Petit Le Mans event while driving for Level 5 Motorsports in 2010 with co-drivers Marco Werner and Scott Tucker. He first competed in the series in 2003 while driving a Porsche 911 GT3-RS for Cunningham Racing and returned in 2010 for three starts with Level 5 Motorsports.

The 12 Hours of Sebring is set to begin on Saturday, March 17 at 10:30 AM (ET). A two-hour broadcast of the event will televise Sunday, March 18 at 10:00 AM (ET) on ABC.

The race can also be followed with live timing and scoring at www.americanlemans.com.

Starting the year with the Rolex 24 win was perfect, and now we just want to get some momentum going and make the most of this opportunity with Penske Racing.”

In addition to his NASCAR endeavors, Allmendinger also recently announced the creation of a new karting scholarship that will see a young karter earn a season in the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series as well as the opportunity to compete in the Rotax Grand Nationals and the SKUSA SuperNationals.

February 15, 2012–(Daytona Beach, FL)–As the child of two parents who went to work everyday (and sometimes nights, as mom is a nurse…) AJ Allmendinger didn’t come from the kind of background that provided him an unlimited budget to go racing. Fortunately, significant parental sacrifices, Allmendinger’s natural talent and desire, and some well-timed help from racing scholarships helped him race his way to the pinnacle of the sport.

Allmendinger is set to make his debut for Penske Racing this Saturday in the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Dodge in the non-points Budweiser Shootout at the Daytona International Speedway.

Having seen first hand the impact that some outside help can have on a racer’s career, Allmendinger is very pleased to announce a new program that will see a deserving young karter receive a scholarship to race in the 2012 World Karting Association championship starting March 23-25 at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. The scholarship winner will also be set to compete in the Rotax Grand Nationals in August and SKUSA SuperNationals in November.

While Allmendinger was lucky enough to have a winning personality to go with his tremendous on-track skill set, he knows that being the full package is key to getting attention and earning the sponsorship and support needed to move up. To that end, the scholarship prize winner will also receive media and management training from Walldinger Racing, Allmendinger’s management firm.

Allmendinger’s scholarships included prizes from the Skip Barber Racing School (where he finished second in the 2001 National Championship and won the 2002 Barber Dodge Pro Series Championship) as well as being selected to compete by the TEAM USA Scholarship, run by long time broadcaster and motorsports benefactor Jeremy Shaw.

“I was very lucky, so many different times through my career, to get the support that I needed to keep racing and keep moving up,” said Allmendinger, who opened the 2012 season with a win in the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona for Michael Shank Racing. “So I feel very fortunate to be in a position to try to help someone else who is trying to do the same thing. I’ve had really great partners through my career and I think you can expect some exciting announcements as we go forward with this program. I am really looking forward to this being the start of something good for some young racer out there.”

Beginning today, Serious applicants ages 13-16 are asked to send their CV, racing credentials, photo, and short summary of their racing goals to:
