Promise Unfulfilled for Insight Racing at Watkins Glen

Promise Unfulfilled for Insight Racing at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, New York (3 June, 2011) Despite starting up front and running in the lead, the Continental Tire 150 at Watkins Glen didn’t produce the result that Insight Racing had been targeting in round six of the 2011 GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship.

A mid-race fuel strategy change cost the front-running group crucial track position as Jeff Westphal and Nico Rondet shared the No. 18 Insight Racing BMW 328i to bring home a seventh place finish.

“We had a great car. Two great drives, and the crew did a great job,” said Insight Racing Principal and Director Gil Lynagh. “The simple fact is that we had a pit stop strategy that
was based on last year’s cautions, and for some inexplicable reason during the race, we changed our strategy because we doubted a repeat of the number of cautions. But in the end, we had more than last year. We could have stuck with our original strategy and wouldn’t have had to come in for the splash and we would have been right where we should have been.”

The race got off to a promising start, as the team once again led early as Westphal converted his pole position into the point at the start before turning the car over to Rondet.

“We fared pretty well. Obviously I would have liked to lead the field longer, but we knew we didn’t have the straight line speed especially up to the bus stop so I had to do everything I could to defend,” said Westphal. “I’m glad we held them off.The car was in a good position throughout the opening stint and the car was handling well. Nico and I worked on a direction with the set up this weekend and we were on the same page, so it was great to start up front like we did.”

Returning to the fray in 29th, Rondet set about moving his way forward, setting the second-fastest lap of the race on the way back into the top-10. The strong pace and planning were looking to produce another podium run for the first year team, but a subsequent stop for fuel compromised the result as the team scored a fifth-consecutive top-10.

“I wasn’t sure where we were with the strategy but I knew we had to do a splash at the end,” said Rondet. “We had a fast car, on our own. If we had no one ahead, I could carry all the speed through the corner that the car was capable of. But, then you would catch other cars and they just don’t have the cornering speed that we do, but they have so much torque so it was very difficult to pass. There was a chance to take one more position right at the end, but it was high risk. That is not how you win a championship, and that is what we want to do, so I didn’t take the risk."

With the top-10 result, Insight Racing picked up valuable points as the team continues its quest for the championship. It also picks up yet more experience to build on in the future.

“We took the work that the crew and drivers did, and through a miscalculation on the fuel strategy, we came home in eighth," said Lynagh. "But we brought home a good car that was in good shape. The boys raced really hard and we had the second fastest lap of the race. But in ST, track position is critical, and we gave some of that up today. And because the turbo cars have so much torque, they can power out of the corners and we just cannot pass them. We are faster through every corner. It was a good race at the end with 10-12 cars together, running neck and neck, going after each other and racing clean. Today was a learning error, and we will learn from it, and not make it again."

Insight Racing returns to on-track action June 23-24 for Round 7 of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. The Continental Tire 150 will air June 12 at 5:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Breakthrough Podium for Matt Bell at Watkins Glen

Breakthrough Podium for Matt Bell at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (3 June 2011) – Matt Bell and Stevenson Motorsports co-driver John Edwards persevered at the Continental Tire 150 to score their first podium of the season with a run to second in Round 6 of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge at Watkins Glen International.

With the second place result, Bell delivers his third podium to Stevenson Motorsports having finished second last year at VIR and third at Trois-Rivieres.

Following an impressive qualifying session, Bell started the 2.5 hour race from the sixth position and set a rapid pace to take the lead of the race by lap six. The California native led the team’s first laps of the season and continued to push the car as he remained at the front of the field for an additional eight laps around the 3.4-mile New York road course. He would pit out of the lead and hand the controls to Edwards when Stevenson Motorsports took the opportunity to pit under caution.

Unfortunately, the No. 9 Camaro GS.R would suffer a setback following a pit lane hiccup which would see GRAND-AM enforce a 30-second penalty on the team. However, Stevenson Motorsports rallied back when Edwards rejoined the field in the 19th position and quickly made a charge forward.

“John averaged faster lap times than the leaders and began to make up ground,” said Bell. “He was a rock star out there.”

The No. 9 Camaro climbed 17 spots and would challenge for the lead before taking the checkered flag in the runner-up position.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Bell of his season-best result. “Nick Eddy and the rest of the engineering team did an awesome job with engineering the car. We had a couple slip ups with the pit stops but it didn’t matter. I’m really happy with the result and now we have two weekends in a row with solid finishes and points.”

While Bell celebrates his Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge podium result, the race weekend is not yet over as he joins Doran Racing in the No. 77 Daytona Prototype for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race on Saturday.

With the fourth place finish at Lime Rock followed by the Watkins Glen podium result, Bell and Edwards will look to continue this positive trend as Stevenson Motorsports heads to Road America June 23-24 for Round 7.

The Continental Tire 150 will air June 12 at 5:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Tim Bell Adds Watkins Glen to Growing Race Resume

Tim Bell Adds Watkins Glen to Race Resume

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (3 June 2011) – Tim Bell posted another strong performance behind the wheel of the No. 14 Office Depot BMW 128i on Friday in his sixth GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge start. Starting from the 17th position, Bell had his work cut out for him as the rookie racer took the green flag for the Continental Tire 150 at Watkins Glen International.

As he began the 2.5-hour race, he made quick work of moving forward to grab an impressive seven spots and run 10th by the end of the first lap. Unfortunately, that effort would not be rewarded as the No. 14 BMW suffered a mechanical setback during the final stint of the race which ended the Doran Racing team’s day early.

Bell put down some quick laps throughout his one hour stint despite suffering multiple hits to the BMW throughout the busy opening laps in the ever-competitive ST class field. With damage to the side and rear of the car, Bell endured less than ideal handling conditions to move the No. 14 machine forward into the sixth position before handing the car over to co-driver BJ Zacharias.

Zacharias would run as high as 13th before the early retirement saw the team finish a disappointing 27th place.

“I had a great run into turn one and made up several spots on the start,” said Bell. “There was some beating and banging at the beginning which left the car pretty battered, but there was a lot of passing going on out there and we made it up to sixth. The early laps were fun but unfortunately he car is pretty damaged and some of the guys didn’t seem to be using their heads out there. But I’m really looking forward to the next one at Road America. I’ve tested there before, but the BMW will be different so I’m excited to see how it goes.”

Bell returns to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition June 23-24 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

The Continental Tire 150 will broadcast on SPEED June 12 at 5:00 PM (ET).

TV Information: SPEED, June 12th, 5:00 PM ET

Watkins Glen NY (3 June, 2011)– Adam Burrows and Trevor Hopwood broke through for their debut GRAND-AM win together at Watkins Glen in 2008 and the duo had been hoping to once again celebrate a big day at the legendary finger lakes facility with a strong result in Friday’s Continental Tire 150. Despite running six laps of the race up front with the No. 12 Infinity Audio Kia Forte Koup for Kinetic Motorsports, the day didn’t end in champagne as the duo came home fifteenth at the finish on Friday night.

Burrows opened the race from behind the wheel, and with the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge staging its first combined-class race since VIR, it was a busy stretch of 3.4-mile track as the large field raced hard right out of the gate.

“It was definitely an interesting start to the race,” said Burrows, who on multiple occasions had to make lightning moves to miss multi-car accidents. “I think I spent more time just dodging people that had been hit by someone else or going sideways. It was not pretty to begin with – more of it was just trying to keep out of trouble.”

He did exactly that, and stayed out of trouble to work his way to the front, leading six laps before peeling into the pits on lap 33 to turn the car over to Hopwood during one of the race’s 5 caution periods.

“All in all, I thought the car was pretty good but still weak in a straight line compared to the turbo cars,” said Burrows. “I was around probably every different car in the field… and every car pulled us going up through the esses and down the back straightaway. That didn’t make it easy. The Kinetic guys had solid pit stop – I think it was one of our better pit stops of the year for sure.”

Hopwood returned to the fray deep in the pack as others had elected to pit earlier in the race. But looking to make the most of the fresher tires and even fresher driver, he began to pick his spots and move up the order. But there was a lot of track position to make up, so a lap 51 caution was well welcomed to bunch the field.

“The strategy was tough-everyone had pitted before we did so we had a lot of ground to make up after the driver change, I did my best to pick up as many spots as I could,” said Hopwood. “It’s tough here with not having the motor that some of the other cars do. I had to really make a lot of moves where I could. I tried to catch up to Nic to try to help him out at the end. The last yellow helped us, getting everyone back in the pack. But the second yellow didn’t because it shortened the amount of time we had to race and move up. Maybe we could have grabbed a few more spots at the end, but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Burrows echoed that sentiment as the two headed out of the track for the trip home.

“This result wasn’t what we had been hoping for, but we will take the points and look forward to Road America, although that track has a lot of long straights too…”

Contact Ruins Rum Bum Racing’s Return to Victory Lane

Contact Ruins Rum Bum Racing’s Return to Victory Lane

Watkins Glen, NY (3 June 2011) – Less than one week after Rum Bum Racing drivers Nick Longhi and Matt Plumb won the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park with the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing BMW M3, the team was right on track to make the same statement with a win at Watkins Glen on Friday night.

Unfortunately, the roller coaster that has been the last three rounds of GRAND-AM racing for Rum Bum Racing took a plunge on Friday night as the No. 13 was damaged after contact from another car. The hit and resulting damage forced the machine back behind the wall for repairs, scuttling any shot at a win. The team rallied to make repairs and return to the track to run to the checkered flag and scrape as many possible championship points out of the predicament, but the damage was done as the team finished 20th in class.

Longhi opened the race and after being frustrated to only qualify fifth, found himself behind the wheel of a car that felt just like it has in races past. While he knew he had a machine capable of charging to the front, Longhi played it cool, knowing that it was more important to stick to the plan and turn the car over in top-five position, which was exactly what he did.

“The car was absolutely transformed compared to what we experienced in qualifying, and I was nearly giggling in my helmet about how good the car was,” said Longhi. “Joe Varde had once again worked some magic, and the car was back to its old self. I know those Camaros have an unbelievable amount of speed in a straight line, but we had a race winning car today, no question.”

Plumb returned to the track in seventh after a quick pit stop from the Rum Bum Racing crew, and was quickly up to fifth in the order after the restart. A line of cars formed behind a Mustang that was fast in a straight line but with a non series regular behind the wheel, giving up a lot of time in the corners. Plumb had the pace, but the competitor didn’t have the race craft as he came slamming into the Rum Bum BMW at the apex of turn one, even though Plumb had the line.

“I really don’t know what he was thinking. We were behind him and had several chances to get by, but I didn’t know how he’d race me so I wanted to wait until it was a clean shot,” said a gutted Plumb. “I just don’t know what to say-I was already there inside him but he came right down and just hit me. Unbelievable. It’s just not possible that he didn’t see me. I’m so disappointed, I can barely think of what to say right now. The car was spectacular–and that almost makes it worse, to have such a competitive car but to have something like this take us out of a win.”

The team will have another shot at the top step of the podium in three weeks’ time as the series heads to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

Brian Frisselle Ready for Six Hours at Watkins Glen

Brian Frisselle Ready for Six Hours at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (1 June 2011) – Just days after completing the Memorial Day Classic at Lime Rock Park, Brian Frisselle heads to Watkins Glen International this weekend for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen.

The event is the second-longest race on the schedule and marks the half-way point of the 12-race GRAND-AM season. Frisselle, who has competed in the six-hour race for the past six years, looks to use his experience and knowledge of the track to gain an advantage in Round 6 of the championship. He has one win on the short course to his credit (of four career Rolex Series victories) and will look to add a top trophy from the classic Grand Prix circuit to his collection.

Frisselle fondly remembers his podium result at the event in 2009 when he started from third on the grid and drove a remarkable race to finish second, and while last year’s race was also a memorable one for the Colorado racer, it is one he does not wish to repeat.

Frisselle shared the seat of Michael Shank Racing’s No. 6 Daytona Prototype with co-drivers Michael Valiente and Mark Patterson and after starting seventh, ran solidly in the top-10 throughout the race. Valiente took control of the No. 6 for the final stages of the race, but the Michael Shank Racing Daytona Prototype suffered a devastating fire which left the car destroyed.

“Last year’s race certainly was not how we wanted it to end up, but I’ve had some great runs at The Glen and I’m excited to get back,” said Frisselle. “I really enjoy the longer races and the Six Hours of the Glen is one race that I really want to win.”

Frisselle returns to the facility with Doran Racing for the 2011 running of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen along with co-driver Henri Richard who leads the MESCO Building For The Future Rookie of the Year Award standings. The two will again join forces behind the wheel of the No. 77 Office Depot Daytona Prototype and could have the added challenge of wet track conditions as a chance of rain is forecasted for Saturday’s race.

“Weather is always a factor when we race at Watkins Glen,” commented Frisselle. “It will be a challenging race but it’s a great event and we hope to have the No. 77 Office Depot machine mixing it up at the front.”

The Doran Racing duo returns to on-track action on Friday, June 3 for practice and qualifying with the six-hour race set to begin on Saturday at 1:00 PM (ET). The race will broadcast on tape delay beginning at 4:30 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Rum Bum Racing Fifth on Watkins Glen Grid

Rum Bum Racing Fifth on Watkins Glen Grid

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (2 June 2011) – Rum Bum Racing returned to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition for the Continental Tire 150 at Watkins Glen International just days after winning its second race of the season at Lime Rock Park. Riding that wave of momentum, Nick Longhi and Matt Plumb were hoping to score a strong spot on the mixed Grand Sports and Street Tuner grid at the historic track.

Longhi took controls of the No. 13 BMW M3 for the 15-minute qualifying session and secured fifth place on the 55+ combined class grid to start from the third row. The result marks the fourth top-five and fifth top-10 starting position of the season for Rum Bum Racing.

“The car was better than it’s been, it just didn’t come together and I’m not sure why,” said Longhi, who has habitually put the car up front in qualifying and again at race time. “I had a good lap going and for some reason the time just doesn’t show how quick the car is. We’ll go through the data and see, but fifth is still a decent place for us. It’s a long race and I know we just have to be smart out there and put Matt in a position to close just like he did last weekend.”

Qualifying Ends Short for Tim Bell at Watkins Glen

Qualifying Ends Short for Tim Bell at Watkins Glen

Looking for another top-15…or better on Friday night

Watkins Glen, N.Y. (2 June 2011) – As Tim Bell took his first laps at the historic Watkins Glen International road course in preparation for Friday’s Continental Tire 150, the California racer made solid progress throughout the opening practice sessions to shave three seconds off his best lap time.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to keep improving after the No. 14 Office Depot 128i suffered a setback during qualifying after a differential issue cut the session early for Bell. Despite not getting much time on track to lay down a flyer, Bell will open the 2.5-hour race from the ninth row and look to move up before handing the car over to co-driver BJ Zacharias.

Westphal Takes Watkins Glen Pole for Insight Racing

Westphal Takes Watkins Glen Pole for Insight Racing

Despite traffic on fastest lap, scores debut pole in second series start

Watkins Glen, NY- (2 June 2011) – Jeff Westphal made his return to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge look as seamless as his Series debut as he notched another new accomplishment for Insight Racing by scoring pole position for Friday’s Continental Tire 150.

Westphal will open the 2.5-hour race from behind the wheel of the No. 18 Insight Racing BMW 328i before turning the driving duties over to co-driver Nico Rondet. Westphal clocked a fast lap time of 2:09.430 seconds around the legendary 3.4-mile track to set the BMW on pole. The team finished the Virginia International Raceway race in second, led the event at Lime Rock Park, and will look to make a trip to the top step of the podium Friday at Watkins Glen.

“All told it was pretty good and we were pretty happy with the car,” said Wesphal. “The team has worked really really hard and we’ve made a lot of progress this weekend. I had traffic on two of my fastest laps so I’ll admit that I was frustrated not to be even quicker. We know we have a good race car so we’ll see what we can do tomorrow.”

The young charger last raced for Insight at Barber Motorsports Park, but showed no signs of rust in just his second career GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge start.

“It definitely takes a little bit of adjusting especially when you’re bouncing between different cars. But with that said a car is a car-it has four tires so it’s my job to figure it out. Fortunately, this car is so nice to drive with the Insight team and all of Steve Dinan’s work. I can get acquainted really fast and feel comfortable and feel right at home right away.”
