Westphal Takes Watkins Glen Pole for Insight Racing
Despite traffic on fastest lap, scores debut pole in second series start
Watkins Glen, NY- (2 June 2011) – Jeff Westphal made his return to GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge look as seamless as his Series debut as he notched another new accomplishment for Insight Racing by scoring pole position for Friday’s Continental Tire 150.
Westphal will open the 2.5-hour race from behind the wheel of the No. 18 Insight Racing BMW 328i before turning the driving duties over to co-driver Nico Rondet. Westphal clocked a fast lap time of 2:09.430 seconds around the legendary 3.4-mile track to set the BMW on pole. The team finished the Virginia International Raceway race in second, led the event at Lime Rock Park, and will look to make a trip to the top step of the podium Friday at Watkins Glen.
“All told it was pretty good and we were pretty happy with the car,” said Wesphal. “The team has worked really really hard and we’ve made a lot of progress this weekend. I had traffic on two of my fastest laps so I’ll admit that I was frustrated not to be even quicker. We know we have a good race car so we’ll see what we can do tomorrow.”
The young charger last raced for Insight at Barber Motorsports Park, but showed no signs of rust in just his second career GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge start.
“It definitely takes a little bit of adjusting especially when you’re bouncing between different cars. But with that said a car is a car-it has four tires so it’s my job to figure it out. Fortunately, this car is so nice to drive with the Insight team and all of Steve Dinan’s work. I can get acquainted really fast and feel comfortable and feel right at home right away.”
