Rum Bum Racing’s Top-11 of 2011

www.facebook.com/rumbumracing

30 December, 2011–As the last days of 2011 click away and everyone looks ahead to what 2012 will bring, it is a good time to take a quick look back at the accomplishments of Rum Bum Racing in 2011. It was hard to narrow down the list, but here are the “Top 11 of 11” for Rum Bum Racing. See you at Daytona in 2012!

1. Daytona Double – After winning the final two GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge races of 2010, Rum Bum Racing burst back into its winning ways at the 2011 season opener at Daytona. Nick Longhi put the No. 13 BMW on the pole and along with Matt Plumb, returned to victory lane at the World Center of Racing for the second consecutive year.

2. Home Sweet Homestead – Rum Bum Racing scored its second pole of the season when the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series traveled to the team’s home track of Homestead-Miami Speedway for Round 2. Nick Longhi turned a quick lap of 1:25.994 seconds during the 15-minute qualifying session with a speed of 96.285 MPH to claim the top starting spot for the second race in a row.

3. Victory at Lime Rock – When the Rum Bum squad scored its second win of the season at Lime Rock Park, the victory was extra special for the team. Following a massive crash in the previous round at VIR, Rum Bum Racing worked around the clock to have the No. 13 BMW back in prime condition in time for the Lime Rock Park event. The effort was well-rewarded when Nick Longhi put the No. 13 machine third on the grid and he and Matt Plumb dominated the race as the duo led 79 laps en route to the win.

4. Return to Road America – The GRAND-AM series returned to historic Road America for the first time in 10 years, but Rum Bum Racing wasted no time getting up to speed in the No. 13 BMW. Nick Longhi earned the team’s third pole of the season with a time of 2:24.547 seconds around the 4.048-mile track and drove to a third place finish along with Matt Plumb to give the team its third podium of the year.

5. Winning at Mid-Ohio – Rum Bum Racing once again bookended the season with wins when the No. 13 was the first to cross the finish line at Mid-Ohio. For the second consecutive year, Rum Bum Racing took a trip to victory lane in the opening round and then returned to the top-step of the podium in the season-finale. The victory marked the team’s third win of the season.

6. Championship Contender – Throughout the entire 2011 season, Rum Bum Racing remained in contention for the championship title. Never falling outside of the top-five in the team standings, Rum Bum Racing’s solid results kept the team in the championship fight until the season-finale race at Mid-Ohio. Despite leading laps and winning the Mid-Ohio event, Rum Bum Racing ultimately claimed third in the championship – a mere 14 points shy of the title.

7. Most Points Delivered for BMW – With three wins, three poles, five podiums, and seven top-five results to the team’s credit, Rum Bum Racing helped BMW to clinch the Manufacturer’s championship for the second consecutive year by scoring more points than any other BMW team with a total of 135 of the 328 points earned for BMW.

8. No. 13 At The Front – Nick Longhi and Matt Plumb set their sights on the front of the field and became quite familiar with the leading position as the No. 13 BMW led laps in six of 10 races for a total of 138 laps led.

9. BMW Power Pays Off – Rum Bum Racing spent most of its time at the front of the field, but even when the No. 13 was not pacing the field, the reliability of the BMW showed itself with the Rum Bum Racing machine completing 739 of 758 laps for a percentage of 97.5% laps completed.

10. Top of the Charts – The Rum Bum Racing BMW had a stellar season with Nick Longhi and Matt Plumb claiming a top-five position in seven of 10 races. The team finished outside of the top-10 in just two events.

11. Strong Starts – In 10 race starts, the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing BMW showed its speed in each qualifying session and started among the top-five in eight events – highlighted with pole positions at Daytona, Homestead, and Road America.

AJ Allmendinger Returns to Kart Action at Daytona

AJ Allmendinger Returns to Kart Action at Daytona

December 28, 2011 (Charlotte, NC)– AJ Allmendinger returns to WKA Manufacturer’s Cup competition this week as he travels south for the WKA Daytona Kartweek event which takes place on the 0.7-mile sprint track located inside the famous Daytona International Speedway oval.

Allmendinger last competed in the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup in March when the series raced at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. As he raced against some of the country’s most talented karters, Allmendinger drove to a second place finish in both the TaG 1 and Parilla Leopard classes and earned sixth in the TaG 2 event. He will participate in those same three categories this week and will run the No. 29 Arrow provided by KartSport. The TaG 1 and Parilla Leopard finals take place on Thursday, December 29 with the TaG 2 final on Friday, December 30.

Allmendinger, who was recently signed to drive the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Dodge for Roger Penske, has been keeping busy in the off season with a pair of previous karting outings at PRI and the Indy Motorsports Show.

The Daytona Kartweek event features the best sprint karters from across the nation with 700 entries expected. As Allmendinger prepares for both the Rolex 24 and Daytona 500 events at the World Center of Racing in the coming months, he hopes to jump start the festivities with victory on the kart track.

“It’s great to come out and stay sharp with some karting, but it is always so tough to jump in and go against the guys who do this week in and week out. I just want to say that in case I don’t win anything!” joked Allmendinger. “It is really very competitive, so I sometimes have to remind myself that I am out here to have fun and hopefully do well. My man Pappas will be taking care of the kart and I’m looking forward to doing a lot of karting over the next few days.”

Live timing and scoring throughout the week can be found on www.worldkarting.com.

ALLMENDINGER TO DRIVE THE PENSKE RACING NO. 22 SHELL-PENNZOIL DODGE IN 2012

ALLMENDINGER TO DRIVE THE PENSKE RACING NO. 22 SHELL-PENNZOIL DODGE IN 2012

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (December 21, 2011) – AJ Allmendinger will join Penske Racing as the driver of the team’s No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Dodge Charger for the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Allmendinger, who has competed in the Cup Series since 2007, is coming off a NASCAR career-best season that saw him finish 15th in the series standings while battling for a position in the Chase for the Championship. The 30-year-old native of Los Gatos, Calif., earned one top-five, 10 top-10 and 22 top-15 results in 2011 while driving the No. 43 car for Richard Petty Motorsports.

“I am really excited about the opportunity to join Penske Racing and drive the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Dodge in 2012,” said Allmendinger. “I have always admired Roger Penske and the way his teams compete and win in every series where they race. It is a privilege for me to represent such iconic and respected brands as Shell-Pennzoil, AAA and Dodge. I am honored to join Penske Racing and I will do my very best to continue to build on the standard of excellence established across the organization.”

Allmendinger will join a winning team that’s poised to compete for a position in the 2012 Cup Series Chase. The No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Dodge team produced two wins, three poles and 16 top-10 finishes in 2011 and earned a spot in the Chase. Allmendinger will be paired with crew chief Todd Gordon, who led the Penske Racing No. 22 Nationwide Series team to six victories last season and was named last week as the new chief of the Shell-Pennzoil Dodge.

“AJ is a very talented and motivated driver and we believe he will be a terrific fit with our team,” said Roger Penske. “He has shown great promise and consistent results on the track over the last few seasons and working with Todd and the Shell-Pennzoil Dodge team will allow him to take the next step and compete for race wins and a spot in the Chase in 2012.”

The new team allegiance will see Allmendinger moving from Richard Petty Motorsports, which went through a series of ownership and management changes since Allmendinger joined the group late in 2008. Despite the off-track dynamic, Allmendinger overcame the challenges as he continued to deliver improved results for the team, year after year.

Allmendinger first competed in the No. 44 entry for RPM, which did not have the sponsorship in place to run the full 2009 Cup season. Allmendinger stepped up to the challenge, funneling prize money earned from strong finishes back into the race program, allowing the No. 44 Dodge entry to run every race of the year. That strong effort saw the Californian asked to carry the colors of the iconic No. 43 starting in 2010, and he continued to deliver improved results.

“I want to thank everyone at Best Buy for their support,” offered Allmendinger. “Last year at this time, we didn’t even know if we had a program in place, but Best Buy jumped in and was a key partner as the No. 43 had it’s best finish in the championship in years. I feel like the people at Best Buy are part of our extended family at Walldinger Racing, and I wish them the best of success in the future. I also want to thank all my guys at Petty. I appreciate all the hard work and dedication from everyone, through some sometimes tough circumstances.”

The 2012 season will see Allmendinger return to driving Dodge machinery as he targets his best season yet in his sixth NASCAR Sprint Cup campaign.

“This is an excellent opportunity for AJ,” said Tara Ragan, Vice-President of Walldinger Racing, which manages AJ Allmendinger’s motorsports interests. “We had to make some tough decisions over the last few days, but these moves will put RPM in a healthier position and help to make sure AJ’s guys all have a place to work in the future. I want to thank all our partners for their support in getting AJ to this point. It is an honor for AJ to have his talents recognized by icons like Richard Petty and Roger Penske, and he is fully committed to making the most of this opportunity.”

Allmendinger Nets Shootout Invite

Allmendinger Nets Shootout Invite

15 December 2011–After placing a career-high 15th in the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings, AJ Allmendinger will make his first Bud Shootout start in February as the 2012 season kicks off at Daytona International Speedway.

2011 saw Allmendinger complete his best season to date as he picked up a top-five finish and 10 top-10 results en route to earning his best ever finish in the championship. HIs year-long effort for Richard Petty Racing has been recognized as he has earned a spot in the 2012 Shootout on February 18.

The All-Star race format isn’t new to Allmendinger and he is already quite familiar with what it takes to win such an event having won the 2008 Sprint Showdown at Charlotte Motor Speedway in only his second Sprint Cup Series season.

Allmendinger has traditionally run well at the World Center of Racing – leading laps at the famed oval as well as scoring a career-best result of third in the 2009 Daytona 500. The Bud Shootout, held a week ahead of the Daytona 500, includes what could be the most talented field to date but Allmendinger looks to return to his winning ways as he returns to a track where he has always been quick.

The race format is a total of 75 laps divided into a 25-lap and 50-lap segment. A 10-minute pit stop between segments allows teams to change tires, add fuel and make any necessary chassis adjustments.
The Bud Shootout is set to begin February 18 at 8:10 PM (ET) on FOX.

"The more I can race, the better, so it’s great to know that we’ll be getting a little bit early start on the season next year in the Shootout," said Allmendinger, who will also race karts at Daytona in an upcoming WKA event. "It sounds like there are going to be some changes in terms of tandem racing and the draft next year so the more experience we can get with that before the 500, the better so I’m happy and hopefully it helps us in the big show a week later. There would be no better way to start 2012 by winning the Daytona 500."

NOVICH AND BURROWS RE-JOIN C360R FOR 2012 CAMPAIGN

NOVICH AND BURROWS RE-JOIN C360R FOR 2012 CAMPAIGN

Up-and-Coming Star to partner with former series champion in new 2012 Honda

(Toronto, Ontario, Canada) — Compass360 Racing (C360R) today released details of the driving duo that will pilot the team’s second brand-new 2012 Honda Civic Si for the coming Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season.

Andrew Novich will return to the team for his second full-season in CTSCC, having impressed in his first year. “Andrew did a tremendous job with us last year,” remarked Team Principal Karl Thomson. “Having spent a season learning the tracks we race at and the nuances of driving one of our Hondas, he’s ready to go for a championship in a new 2012 car.”

Sharing driving duties with Novich is 2007 CTSCC Champion Adam Burrows, who drove to second place in the Driver’s championship with C360R in 2008. He comes back to the team after two seasons in the factory Kia program that won the championship last year. “It’s a bit of deja-vu, because in 2008 we signed Adam (and then co-driver Trevor Hopwood) after they beat Billy Johnson and me to the championship the year before,” laughed Thomson. “And now we’re doing it again, snagging Adam from the championship-winning Kia squad.”

Burrows and Novich will drive the #74 Dr. Kimberly Henry Plastic Surgery / Speed Secrets / Honda Performance Development (HPD) Civic Si, one of two new 2012 Hondas that Compass360 Racing will debut at Daytona Test Days on January 6th.

“I’m excited to start off the season with Adam in a month’s time,” enthused Novich, fresh off a very successful run at the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. “I know the team has been testing and doing a lot of development work with HPD in California on the new cars during the off-season.”

Burrows was similarly pleased. “It’s going to be great to be back with (Technical Director) Ray Lee, Karl and the C360R team. It feels a bit like coming home, and I know with Andrew we’re going to have a real shot at a championship this year.”

The duo will join Ray Mason and Ryan Eversley, who will share the #75 Columbus Truck / Racing4Research / HPD Honda Civic Si. The team expects to announce driver line-ups for its other two cars in the coming weeks.

The Grand-Am season begins with Daytona test days January 6-8th. Fans are welcome at the test; tickets can be purchased at the Daytona International Speedway website: http://bit.ly/rEnQzs.

Allmendinger Set For Indy Classic

Allmendinger Set For Indy Classic

9 December 2011–It isn’t just the elves that are keeping busy these days. Even though the NASCAR Sprint Cup season wrapped a few weekends back, AJ Allmendinger didn’t get the memo to slow down, and has not stopped finding new places to race.

Allmendinger got into the karting sprit last weekend by racing in the Red Bull Kart Fight at the Performance Racing Industry show in Orlando and will once again be up against a field of big names from across the sport.

This weekend, Allmendinger will return to the fray once again as the Richard Petty Motorsports driver is set to race in the Indy Karting Classic.

The Indy Karting Classic features a compact, full day of karting inside Conseco Fieldhouse – an arena located in downtown Indianapolis. Held in conjunction with the International Motorsports Industry Show, the Karting Classic is highlighted by the Pro Division category which will see Allmendinger compete against five other NASCAR drivers as well as six IZOD IndyCar Series drivers. The 12 Pro Racers will go head to head as they compete against one another in what many consider to be the purest form of motorsports.

The temporary indoor 10th-mile kart track is a combination of an oval and road course, with several sweeping left-hand turns featured on the ultra-quick track.
The Pro Racers will each use the same IAME Parilla Leopard X30 engine, but will utilize different brands of chassis with Allmendinger running a Arrows chassis provided by Walldinger Racing partner KartSport of Mooresville, NC

Always quick to return to his karting roots, Allmendinger last climbed behind the wheel of a TaG kart in March during one of NASCAR’s few off-weekends. He competed against the nation’s top TaG racers at the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series Zoom Zoom Nationals held at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina and finished second in both the TaG 1 and Parilla Leopard categories as well as sixth in the TaG 2 class among an elite field.

In addition to the Pro Division, five karter divisions will also run the event including Kid Kart, Yamaha Sportsman Heavy, Yamaha Junior Heavy, Yamaha SuperCan Heavy and TaG Senior. The Indy Karting Classic will see a full day of practice, qualifying, heat races, and main races on Sunday, December 11. In addition to the racing, the halls of Conseco Fieldhouse will be filled with karting industry displays and representatives from karting tracks, karting manufacturers and other suppliers.

“I’m looking forward to racing again this weekend and seeing what this track is like,” said Allmendinger. “Karting helps to keep you sharp in the off-season so I’ve been trying to do as much as I can. We were in Orlando last weekend and now to Indy, and then it will be back down to Dayona for the WKA races in a few weeks. It’s good to get into the rhythm of racing on a kart again. It’s hard to just jump back on to a kart and expect to be competitive right away against guys who are on these things week in and week out. So the more I can do, the better!”

Insight Racing Confirms 2012 GRAND-AM Driver Line Up

Insight Racing Confirms 2012 GRAND-AM Driver Line Up

Rookie standout Ryan Ellis joins Jensen, McQuarrie, and Westphal in 2-car BMW campaign

1 December 2012–After making an immediate impression at the front of the field in 2011, Insight Racing will look to build on an impressive rookie season of GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition as the team announced a strong driver line up for the 2012 campaign. The line up for both team BMW entries represents largely known entities to the team, combined with new talent that will progress the teams goals for success in 2012.

Insight Racing will compete in the Grand Sport (GS) class with drivers Martin Jensen (Denmark) and Jeff Wesphal (United States) co-driving the No. 19 Insight Racing BMW M3. Jensen is a proven touring car ace, with Westphal in a full-time seat with the team after showing tremendous speed in a limited schedule of race outings with Insight in 2011.

The Street Tuner (ST) effort will see Tyler McQuarrie (United States) return to the team, joined by GRAND-AM Rookie of the Year Ryan Ellis (United States) as the duo are set to share the team’s new No. 18 BMW 128i for the 10-round championship season. McQuarrie showed his natural speed with Insight Racing last season, and will be a perfect match for the young up and coming Ellis, who despite his youth, brings years of experience to the organization.

With the 2012 driver line up now in place, the team is well-situated to continue to develop as a group and be ready to perform from the onset of the 2012 GRAND-AM season at Daytona.

“I’m pleased with the driver line-up for the 2012 season,” said Insight Racing Team Director and Principal Gilbert Lynagh. “This group is quite talented–both the drivers that we’ve signed to race, and the group of engineers and mechanics who build and prepare the cars. We have a plan for success, and we are adhering to that plan and this group of drivers is precisely the mix of talent, speed, experience, and professionalism that we were looking for to achieve our objectives.”

Aerovault Trailer Joint Venture: Brock Racing Enterprises and Riley Technologies

Press Release from Brock Racing Enterprises:

Aerovault Trailer Joint Venture: Brock Racing Enterprises and Riley Technologies

For immediate release: "Our customers love their aerodynamic, full-feature Aerovault trailers. The only issue we’ve ever had is not being able to build enough to satisfy demand. By March of this year, we had sold out our entire 2011 build capacity", said Peter Brock, well-known automotive designer and CEO of Brock Racing Enterprises.

The challenge with increasing production lies at the very heart of the Aerovault’s advantage, it’s unique construction. The Aerovault doesn’t use conventional motor home construction techniques like other trailers and being truly aerodynamic, results in a dramatic increase in fuel efficiency and handling. "Those sharp-nosed Vs on so-called aero trailers do little to improve aerodynamics and the undersides are all turbulence with exposed axles and even loading ramps hanging down in some cases", exclaims Brock who made his reputation proving his aerodynamic theories with the Cobra Daytona Coupe which won the FIA World GT Championship in 1965.

Brock goes on to ponder; "Why don’t trailer manufacturers understand aerodynamics?" The Aerovault is not only efficient but it leverages a semi-monocoque design whereby its 1/8" thick aluminum skin is its structure. It’s no surprise that when Brock went to design a trailer for his own needs, he designed one that has more in common with a race car than a traditional trailer.

"For those reasons, no U.S. trailer manufacturers we approached were interested in building it" explains Brock. "From every perspective it’s a far superior trailer for users but it takes more time, requires more craftsmanship and consequently, costs much more to build. They didn’t have the skills nor understand the value. It was frustrating. Then a light bulb went off in my head when I saw Bill Riley at the Sebring race in March."

The skills at Riley Technologies go back to the 1990s with noted success in chassis development, car construction and race team wins. BRE became familiar with Bob Riley’s company in 1999 when they campaigned the Corvette C5 R and developed the Cadillac Northstar LMP car for the Le Mans series in 2000. As Brock delved into the details of their program, as a photojournalist reporting on the state of the industry for numerous news outlets, he liked what he saw.

"BRE approached us about building their trailers and we saw some good synergy", said Bill Riley, Vice President of Riley Technologies. Ron McMahon, Vice President and CFO, went on to state: "We’re an engineering company and it’s a well-engineered trailer. Where other manufacturers must have scratched their heads at the thought of fully skinning the underside of a trailer, we get it. I’ve towed trailers thousands of miles and as I went over every square inch of this trailer, I was impressed with all the well thought out details. We’re very pleased to be able to join BRE in satisfying the demand of car enthusiasts with yet another quality, well-engineered product."

Brock designed the Aerovault to satisfy the needs of the "weekend warrior". A person who wants to take their car to the track and maybe have a set of spare wheels and tires, fuel, a jack and some basic necessities on board. More than 50% of current Aerovault owners race vintage Porsches.

Common use also includes those who take their cars to Concours events. "I’m trying to start a Concours for trailers. I’d be a hands-down winner with my Aerovault", says Jay of Utah, who frequently takes home the prize with his collection of Ferraris and Lamborghinis which he hauls in his Aerovault.

One of the first things most notice is that with the trailer’s aerodynamic efficiency and superb handling, a super-sized tow vehicle is not required. Common tow vehicles include BMW X5s, Porsche Cayenne’s and Ford F150s. "I don’t want a dedicated tow vehicle. I want my tow vehicle to also serve as my daily driver", shared Brian from Long Island.

Of course a primary concern today is fuel efficiency. "Why tow around all this dead air space", says Brock of traditional trailers. Super road warrior Fred, from Arizona, keeps meticulous records. "When towing my previous trailer I couldn’t go faster than 65 mph or my truck would kick down from 6th gear to 5th. With the Aerovault these last two years I can go posted 75mph speeds with the truck in cruise control AND I get 35% better fuel mileage than with my previous trailer. If I go the same speed I did with my old trailer, at 65mph, I get 54% better fuel mileage!"

Production of the all aluminum Aerovault has begun at Riley’s 40,000 sq foot facility in Mooresville, NC with trailers being delivered to their new owners starting the end of January… just in time for the 2012 season!

For more information, view the Aerovault brochure at http://www.bre2.net with detailed specifications and floor plans or contact BRE or Riley Technologies below.

AJ Allmendinger Facebook Page Launches with Ford Champions Weekend Contest

AJ Allmendinger Facebook Page Launches with Ford Champions Weekend Contest

November 12, 2011 (Charlotte, NC)– AJ Allmendinger fans have a new way to keep up on all things “Dinger” as his Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ajallmendinger) has now gone live. The site, which will be a destination location on the web and provide fans of the Ford Racing driver an interactive source of news, videos, and contests on a recurring basis, was developed in conjunction with Serendipity Interactive (http://serendipityinteractive.com).

The site has gone live after a rapid development cycle, and will host the first-ever AJ Allmendinger Facebook give-away this week thanks to Ford. Two lucky fans will win the full sweep of tickets for the NASCAR season-finale Ford Champions weekend.

Fans can enter to win by “Like”-ing Allmendinger’s Facebook page. The winner will receive tickets for themselves and one guest to every race of the Ford Championship weekend at Homestead Miami Speedway.

For the winners, the weekend starts off with two tickets to the Ford 200 on Friday night for the NASCAR Camping World Series finale, then again on Saturday for the Ford 300 and the NASCAR Nationwide Series finale, and then one final race of the year with two tickets to the Ford 400 on Sunday. The two winners and their guests will also get the chance to take in some pre-race hospitality courtesy of Ford.

But before they hit the track, the winners will also get the chance to gear up thanks to Best Buy, who will provide $100 gift cards to each set of winners.

“It’s cool to finally have an official Facebook site,” said Allmendinger, who will target another front row start at Phoenix this weekend. “Having a sponsor like Best Buy helps me keep on the sharp end of technology and it’s always fun to get the chance to interact with fans, even if they are not right there at the track. I’ll admit to being a little hooked on Twitter already, so hopefully this is just as much fun–for me, and for the fans!”
