Allmendinger Q and A

AJ Allmendinger, driver of the No. 43 Best Buy Ford Fusion met with members of the media as part of the top-12 driver availability at Dover International Speedway Friday afternoon.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS TRACK THAT SUITS YOUR STYLE BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN GOOD HERE OVER THE YEARS?  “I don’t know. I think it is a fun race track to drive and I think there are a lot of things you can do on this race track to get around it and run pretty fast. The way I look at it there are different driving options of how you drive this race track to be fast. I have always had a fairly good car here, especially the last couple of years which makes it easier. To me, I just show up to this race track and I am excited to be here. I like this race track. I think when you are able to do that you can come here and have a good attitude about it and be pretty fast.”

WITH THE FORECAST OF RAIN FROM TONIGHT ON, HOW MUCH WILL THAT PLAY A FACTOR FOR YOU GUYS?  “Well you are kind of a downer aren’t you?  Way to get me excited. You know, it is weather. If it is going to rain then it will and if not then we will go run these two practices and focus on what we always focus on, making the car good in race trim and work on qualifying trim when we are ready. Once it rains, it rains and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. My first year I was here many times when it would rain and I wasn’t high enough in points to race. I have been on the bad end of it. Now I know that whenever it does stop raining, I will be racing. That is all that matters.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE DROPPING OFF THE STRAIGHTAWAY, DOWN INTO THE CORNER AND GETTING BACK INTO THE GAS?  “It is pretty insane, especially to go into turn one. It feels like the bottom drops out from under you. It seems like it disappears when you take off and once it lands it is like a punch to the guy. When it compresses, it compresses so hard. It feels like you honestly drop 50 feet in the air and land. The biggest thing is around this place to have a good balance when it does land that the car isn’t moving around at all and isn’t tight or loose. You want it to land nice and smooth and have the confidence to get it turned and get back to throttle, especially in qualifying. In the race you lay the corner back so much that the bottom, when it lands, is not as critical. In qualifying you are so fast that once you land you have to be back in the throttle. That is what makes it so much fun. I remember the first time I came here was in trucks in 2007 before Cup practice. We were standing on pit road and my crew chief told me not to look at any of the trucks coming off turn for and I said, “Why, I need to learn.’ Me, being done said I was going to look and Hornaday came off turn four the first time and it looked like the tires weren’t even touching the ground and he was sideways and I was like, ‘I am not doing that. I am leaving.’ It is an insane race track but it is all those characteristics that make it so much fun.”

Michael Marsal Returns to site of debut victory at VIR

Targets return to podium to kick-start 2011 Championship

13 May, 2011–You never forget your first, and for Turner Motorsport racer Michael Marsal, his first-ever win in the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge last year was particularly rewarding, as it came at Virginia International Raceway, one of the most challenging tracks on the schedule. The victory set off a back to back win streak among a string of podium appearances for Marsal and his Turner Motorsport co-driver Joey Hand that saw the duo fighting for the championship all the way to the last lap of the year.

Fast forward one season, and Marsal is back at VIR with a familiar car, co-driver, and goal this weekend as GRAND-AM stages round four of the ten-race championship with Saturday’s Bosch Engineering 200. Entering the weekend sixth in the team championship standings, Marsal and Hand have not got off to the fast start of the year that they had been hoping for with finishes of eleventh, seventh, and sixth in the opening three rounds.

Rum Bum Racing Thursday Wrap Up From VIR

Loose Bolt Gets in the Way of Rum Bum’s Progress

ALTON, Va, 12 May – Pre-testing for the GRAND-AM Continental Sports Car Challenge Bosch 200 at Virginia International Raceway turned out to be an exercise in frustration for the Rum Bum Racing squad, but the team will bounce back when it counts. Despite finishing the day among the fast 10, the No. 13 BMW M3 was a handful to drive on the twists, turns, ups and downs of VIR’s 3.27-mile natural terrain road course.

Drivers Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi, in collaboration with crew chief Joe Varde, worked meticulously through three hours of testing to overcome a handling deficit that made the M3 loose in the corners. Yet, their better efforts were stymied after each change, forcing the team to take the car back under the tent to track down the problem. Eventually, a damaged suspension nut causing the whole assembly to be loose was identified as the culprit. By the time the replacement and repair was effected, the day was essentially over, and as a result, the team’s bid to use the test day to dial in the car’s set up was lost.

“Better that this happened today, which doesn’t count for anything than tomorrow or Saturday when it really matters. Still we now find ourselves a bit behind on our plan, but it’s certainly not an insurmountable problem,” said Plumb, who grew up in Virginia.

A strong thunderstorm followed by periods of heavy rain dominated the last hour and half of the test. The weather pattern is expected to continue through the weekend meaning that racing in mixed conditions is inevitable.

“It would have been nice to run a few wet laps this afternoon to get a feel for the car under those conditions, but it’s not going to be significant issue for us,” said Longhi. “I’m glad that we’ve identified and solved the problem, and the fact that, all things considered, we were not horrifically off the pace means that we are not in panic mode. We know the car is fast here, so we’ll pick where we started off today and go from there to get back to where we should be.”

The Rum Bum squad will have 90 minutes to practice tomorrow split between two sessions before qualifying for the Bosch 200 gets underway at 4:20 EDT. Follow the action live at

Virginia International Raceway Preview: Insight Racing

Virginia International Raceway Preview: Insight Racing

*Back home to Virginia for several team members
*Continued progress as team builds on best finish to date in most recent race
*Busy times as after multi-week break, GRAND-AM staging three races in next four weeks

DANVILLE, VA 12 May 2011– As the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge moves from the sculpted and manicured green layout at Barber Motorsports Park on to the decades-old but recently rejuvenated 3.27-mile natural terrain road course at Virginia International Raceway, the challenge remains the same for Insight Racing.

Running its first season of GRAND-AM competition, Insight Racing will take on a field of over sixty cars in the combined-class event, which will be staged on one of the most daunting tracks on the continent.

The Bosch 200 weekend is a sort of homecoming for the rookie organization, which opened the year based in Dulles, Virginia. The team has now fully integrated into its new headquarters in Hilliard, Ohio as round four of the ten-race championship beckons.

The team will once again have a competitive presence in both the Street Tuner (ST) and Grand Sports (GS) class field. Fabled motorsports innovator Steve Dinan will oversee the engineering progress for the team during the three day event for both the ST entry (No. 18 Insight Racing BMW 328i) co-driven by Nico Rondet and Tyler McQuarrie, and the GS class machine (No. 19 Insight Racing BMW M3 GS) piloted by Paul Gerrard and Martin Jenson.

Adding to the anticipation ahead of the event, beyond all the normal variables in play when over 100 drivers take to the track to vie for champagne honors, Saturday’s 2.5-hour endurance event could well see a new factor take effect this weekend as rain is a high probability for the race.

The top-ten finish at Barber Motorsports Park with the No.18 entry was a promising one for the team, and reflected the continually-improving results for both cars from the rookie squad. But mere top tens are not the ambition for Insight Racing, and the time between the races has given the team the opportunity to continue to develop and prepare for not only the Bosch 200 this weekend, but also the intense schedule of races that follow, as three rounds of GRAND-AM competition are set over the next four weeks.

“I was very happy with the team performance at Barber, and even though the results were not really reflective of the podium potential that we had, it was a good weekend for us to continue to build on,” said Insight Racing Team Principal & Director Gilbert Lynagh.

“As a new team, we’ve worked hard to make the most of the break that we’ve had since Barber, and we are ready to continue to move up over the course of these next three races in the weeks ahead. It’s a special weekend for some of our team members to be racing back in Virginia again, and hopefully it will be one to remember as we expect to deliver better and better results.”

Can Matt Bell Get Back to the Podium at VIR?

Can Matt Bell Get Back to the Podium at VIR?

Danville, Va (11 May 2011) – As the final moments of last year’s Bosch Engineering 200 clicked off, there was a lot of pacing and fingernail chewing on pit lane. The Stevenson Motorsports Camaro walked the tightrope of speed and fuel performance perfectly to take a debut GRAND-AM podium result for the Riley Technologies-built Chevrolet Camaro at Virginia International Raceway.

That result kicked-off an uptick in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge performance for Stevenson Motorsports as Matt Bell went on to score a debut pole position and led the first laps with the Chevy Camaro.

Fast forward one year and Bell is back at VIR, this year teaming in the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R with another young hard charger in the form of John Edwards. The duo arrive in rural Virginia after netting their season-best result of fifth in the most recent round of racing.

“We’ve definitely put the race in Daytona out of our memory, and have just been working on getting better every weekend,” said Bell, who will likely qualify and handle the starting duties this weekend. “The Camaro continues to develop, and even though we have more confidence about our qualifying pace than we do about the entire race, we’ll hopefully be mixing it up at the front again.”

With finishes of 28th, 11th, and 5th on the record sheet, there is a clear trend heading into the event, which marks round four of the 2011 championship.

“I’m really happy with some of the solutions that Stevenson has come up with from an engineering point of view — there have been sessions where we found the sweet spot perfectly,” said Bell, who also is trending in qualifying with starts of fourth, third, and second in the first three races. “It could also be a race where we are dealing with the rain, but we won’t know until race day. That will keep the engineers busy! In the mean time, we have a plan in place for the test day and the practice sessions so we’ll hopefully be in good shape not just in qualifying, but also for the race. This is a really fun track to race on, and hopefully we can bring the Camaro home on the podium again.”

Bell returns to on-track action at VIR for a promoter test day on Thursday, May 12 followed by official practice and qualifying on Friday. The Bosch Engineering 200 will begin at 11:15 AM (ET) on Saturday, May 14. The race will broadcast May 22 at 1:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Brian Frisselle Looks ahead to VIR

Brian Frisselle Looks ahead to VIR

Gelling Well with Doran Racing and New Teammate, Frisselle Looking to Crack Top 5 at VIR

http://frisselleracing.com/

ALTON, Va, 11 May – Last year, after a strong qualifying effort was thwarted at race time by some bad racing luck, Brian Frisselle finished in seventh place at the Bosch Engineering 250, one of his nine Top 10 finishes on the year. Now hired to partner with Henri Richard to drive Doran Racing’s No. 77 Office Depot machine, Frisselle will look to go even better this year.

Frisselle and Richard, who currently leads the MESCO Rookie of the Year standings, finished in 10th place at the last GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series round in Barber Motorsports Park. That top 10 marked progress on the season, and is their best result together after a trying start to the year in the first two races at Daytona International Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

It’s a positive sign, but for Frisselle, there still remains a feeling that the final result from Barber Motorsports Park was not indicative of their real pace.

“Barber (Motorsports Park) is a very technical circuit and totally new for Henri. We both had very good pace there, but the timing of our pit stops didn’t work out as well as we hoped it would,” said Frisselle, who got his first-ever laps in a Daytona Prototype at VIR. “10th place, while still being very good, didn’t really show what we can do.”

VIR, a natural terrain road course, should suit both Frisselle and Richard. And with a tweak to the rules that have reduced fuel capacity size, adding new strategy options to the mix with the additional fuel stops, could well play into the hands of the experienced Doran Racing squad.

“I think we are better suited to a track like VIR,” Frisselle said. “Doran Racing has always run well here and Henri (Richard) and I are gelling well as a driver line up, and with the team as well. As always pit stops and luck with yellows will be crucial, and of course the new fuel regulations will be a big unknown in terms of how it will play out strategically. I think having a team like Doran Racing is going to be an advantage as far as how everyone works to find the best strategy, because Kevin (Doran) and Gary (Grossenbacher) have seen and experienced so many rules changes, hopefully that experience will help us this weekend. ”

Should Frisselle crack the Top-5 this weekend, it would mark a career best finish at VIR with his previous best, a sixth place, back in 2008.

“I’ve driven for a fair number of teams, including some with a pretty good history, and I can say that I’m feeling good about here at Doran and driving with Henri,” said Frisselle, who owns four Rolex Series victories. “It’s a new situation for me, to be trying to help him do well in the Pro-Am standings and in the Rookie rankings. So, given our result at Barber, I’m hoping that our season really starts here, at VIR and then we can keep building through the next few events and make up some ground in the championship.”

The Bosch Engineering 250 takes place May 14th with television coverage on SPEED at 5:00 PM EDT.

Big Payoff Possible For Bosch Engineering 250 Winner

A combination of factors has led to a possible first-place payoff of $83,750 for Saturday’s winners of the Bosch Engineering 250 at Virginia International Raceway.

In addition to the first-place prize money of $40,000, GRAND-AM has posted a $25,000 ―bounty‖ if a DP team can stop the ―Ganassi Gang‖ by ending the six-race winning streak of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas in the No. 01 TELMEX BMW/Riley. The team won the final three races of 2010 and has continued that streak by winning all three races this year.

Seven DP teams are also eligible for the Continental Horsepower bonus for first-time 2011 winners, which is now up to $18,750 since being claimed by the Ganassi team at the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona. Both Action Express Racing DPs are eligible for the bonus, in addition to the SunTrust Racing, GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, Michael Shank Racing, Doran Racing and Spirit of Daytona Racing teams.

New Track and a New Challenge For Tim Bell at Virginia International Raceway

New Track and a New Challenge For Tim Bell at Virginia International Raceway

Podium Momentum as Bell adds to racing resume this weekend (SPEED, MAY 22 1:00 PM)

Danville, Va. (11 May 2011) – To look at Tim Bell’s race results, one would be hard-pressed to know that the young Californian is but a rookie, running his first season of GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition. So far this season, Bell’s 2011 racing resume — already credited with a podium finish and a top-15 result in just three starts in the pro ranks to date — seems to reflect the results of a much more experienced driver.

Bell travels to Virginia this weekend for the Bosch Engineering 200 at Virginia International Raceway, carrying the momentum of his first-ever pro podium result. The Bosch 200 will mark Bell’s debut race visit to the track, and he wants to make it just as memorable as his breakthrough run at Barber Motorsports Park, where he and co-driver BJ Zacharias combined for a strong run to second place with the Office Depot No. 14 BMW 128i.

Burt Frisselle Targets the Top at VIR with GAMMA88

Burt Frisselle Targets the Top at VIR with GAMMA88

Danville, Va. (11 May 2011) – This weekend, Burt Frisselle will climb behind the wheel of the No. 61 GAMMA88 Daytona Prototype for the Bosch Engineering 250 at Virginia International Raceway with one clear goal in mind: a podium result at the 17-turn, 3.27-mile natural terrain road course. A champagne –scoring breakthrough would break the streak of fourth-place finishes the AIM Autosport squad has garnered since rejoining the series in the second round at Homestead Miami Speedway.

There are several reasons for confidence ahead of round four for Frisselle and AIM Autosport co-driver Mark Wilkins, who recently celebrated a birthday.

Speed and experience come to mind, and with this weekend marking Frisselle’s eighth Daytona Prototype start at the challenging track, he knows the place well. And his GAMMA88 squad will be another potent and speedy part of the equation. Last year’s VIR event saw Frisselle match his career best finish of second as he qualified on the front row before the entry fought to finish just .293 seconds behind the No. 01 machine.
