Road America Roller Coaster Not Much Fun For Marsal

Road America Roller Coaster Not Much Fun For Marsal

1 July 2011– Turner Motorsport racer Michael Marsal had a roller-coaster of a race weekend as the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge series made a debut appearance at Road America for round 7 of the 2011 championship. The event, held in conjunction with the NASCAR Nationwide Series and GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race weekend, was the first-ever visit to the 4-mile track for Marsal, who is contesting just his second full season of GRAND-AM competition.

Marsal and co-driver Joey Hand fought for the championship all the way to the final lap of the 2010 season, but have not had the start that they were looking for so far in 2011, with some bad luck conspiring to keep their best finish to just fifth, at Barber Motorsports Park.

Looking to make the most of the debut event for the series, Marsal was eager to make as many laps as he could on the track that features several high-speed corners as the track winds up and down through the scenic Wisconsin setting. But the college student was thwarted in that effort as his normally bullet proof Turner Motorsport BMW suffered some perplexing engine issues early in the weekend, keeping Marsal off-track through the early sessions.

The Net is Cast For the 2011 Team USA Scholarship Contenders

For Immediate Release:

The Net is Cast For the 2011 Team USA Scholarship Contenders

Program Now in its 22nd Year of Providing Opportunities for Talented Young American Drivers

Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. (June 30, 2011) – For the 22nd year, the Team USA Scholarship will provide opportunities for talented American youngsters to further their careers and follow in the footsteps of a virtual Who’s Who of American auto racing.

Both Jimmy Vasser, who secured the inaugural Scholarship in 1990, and Bryan Herta, the 1991 winner, are now successful car owners in the IZOD IndyCar Series. Other notable alumni include Buddy Rice, Paul Edwards, Andy Lally, Joey Hand, A.J. Allmendinger, Bryan Sellers, Charlie Kimball, J.R. Hildebrand, Dane Cameron, Josef Newgarden and Conor Daly who continue to display their talents in a variety of top-tier championships.

As usual, a list of candidates will be identified, from which two or more winners will be selected.

Eligible drivers will be drawn from a variety of disciplines, including the BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Powered by Mazda, the Bondurant Racing Series, SCCA, the F1600 Formula F Championship Series, the Pacific Formula F Super Series, Corsa Car Care Presents Pacific F2000, the F2000 Championship Series and the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda.

“For the first time in many years, there is now a natural progression of championships that will take youngsters from karting to the top levels of racing in North America – be that the IZOD IndyCar Series, American Le Mans Series, Rolex Grand-Am or NASCAR Sprint Cup,” says Team USA Scholarship founder and long-term auto racing writer and broadcaster Jeremy Shaw. “In particular, the Mazda Road to Indy offers funded opportunities for gifted drivers to progress through the Skip Barber program or the Bondurant Racing Series into USF2000, Star Mazda, Firestone Indy Lights and then the IZOD IndyCar Series. The overall prospects for young drivers have never been better.

“The Team USA Scholarship adds an extra dimension to that ladder of progression and is proud to have support from a wide variety of partners from within the North American racing community.”

The method by which this year’s Scholarship winners are determined will be announced in the near future, but the candidates will be selected over the course of the next six weeks.

“There is a rich vein of talented young drivers in North America,” says Shaw. “Our intention this year is to field cars in both the Formula Ford Kent Festival at Brands Hatch, England, and the Walter Hayes Trophy at Silverstone, as has become the norm in recent seasons, as well as an additional entry in the premier Duratec division of the Formula Ford Festival. We will be taking into account the candidates’ level of experience before deciding what is the most appropriate arena for them to be competing, in order to give them the best chance to shine.”

The Team USA Scholarship has been helping young American drivers since 1990 and is supported by Doug Mockett & Company, Road Racing Drivers Club, Cooper Tire & Rubber Company, Walldinger Racing, Robo-Pong, Highcroft Racing, INDYCAR’s Mazda Road to Indy, Mazda, Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, Honda Performance Development, Silicon Salvage, McMurry Inc., Robertson Racing, PitFit Training, Sparco USA, eFormulaCarNews.com, Speedstar Management, Styled Aesthetic and Manifest Group as well as numerous past Scholarship winners.

Championship Boost for Rum Bum Racing after Road America podium

Championship Boost for Rum Bum Racing after Road America podium

TV Reminder: SPEED – 1:00 PM ET Sunday, July 3

(30 June 2011) – After winning another pole position and setting a track record, Rum Bum Racing was hungry for a return to victory lane last weekend at Road America. But after a late-race caution period cost the team the chance to take the win, Rum Bum Racing drivers Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi had to settle for a third place finish in round 7 of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

While Rum Bum Racing had been looking to return to the top step of the podium and overcome a pair of costly points outings following contact from other cars, the third-place finish none the less put some solid points on the chart for the team.

Still ranked fifth in the Team Championship standings, Rum Bum Racing made some ground up to the championship leader by finishing some five places ahead of the fellow BMW entry.

In addition to targeting success in the Team Championship standings, Rum Bum Racing will look to once again help push BMW to the Manufacturer Championship in 2011. With a string of wins and podiums, Rum Bum helped BWM to win the 2010 Championship with a strong close to the season, something that is on everyone’s mind ahead of the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca round next weekend.

“It was of course great to be up on the podium again, particularly to be able to celebrate with Lu and Jennifer (Bacardi), but I’ll admit that our car was so strong that I was really frustrated after the race,” said Plumb. “Any time you have a car that is capable of winning, you want to make the most of that opportunity and we were right on track to do that before the yellow cut the race short. So, it was frustrating for me, but at least we put some points in the bank and now we’ll move on and just look to execute in the same way again next weekend at Laguna.”

The Road America race will be broadcast by SPEED this Sunday at 1:00 PM ET.

Chattanooga, TN (June 27, 2011): On Sunday, June 26, the world’s first ever professional bio-diesel touring car, a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta built by Chattanooga’s Chili Pepper Racing, was sold at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Orange County, California for $150,000. The sale tied with a 2005 Ford GT for fifth-highest price tag vehicle sold at this year’s event. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund services for families receiving care through the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer.

The car originally thrilled automotive enthusiasts at the inaugural Barrett-Jackson Orange County auction in 2010, where it sold for $35,000 and rapidly generated $45,000 in additional donations before being donated back to raise more funds for the Foundation. To the delight of the crowd and the Austin Hatcher Foundation, the Volkswagen Jetta again was generously donated back after being sold on Sunday. The Austin Hatcher Foundation will again benefit from the sale of the car at Barrett-Jackson’s September 22-24, 2011 event in Las Vegas.
