Americans Pigot, Alberico and Eidson Lead the Way to Indianapolis
All Three Levels of the Mazda Road to Indy Will Support the Grand Prix of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – No fewer than 16 different nationalities will be represented when all three levels of the acclaimed Mazda Road to Indy development ladder continue their campaigns this week in support of the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Perhaps it is appropriate as they head for the premier open-wheel auto racing venue in North America that home-grown drivers currently hold the points lead in all three championships.

Spencer Pigot, who hails from Orlando, Fla., but now makes his home in Indianapolis, took control of the top-tier Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires title-chase by virtue of a commanding double victory two weeks ago at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Ala. Neil Alberico, from Los Gatos, Calif., furthered his claim to the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires by winning also at Barber, while Jake Eidson, from Littleton, Colo., heads the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda standings on the heels of podium finishes in each of the six races held to date.

Coincidentally, fellow rising American star and 2011 Indy Lights champion Josef Newgarden broke through in Alabama by securing his first-ever Verizon IndyCar Series victory for Indianapolis-based CFH Racing. All four drivers will be looking toward the top step of the podium again this weekend at the 2.439-mile road circuit which uses portions of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval.

The Mazda Road to Indy is a proven driver development "ladder" which guides drivers all the way from the grassroots of the sport to the Verizon IndyCar Series and the Indianapolis 500, with scholarship packages to assist in the graduation between each level.

Pigot Aims to Cement his Authority at Indy
Pigot has developed into a poster boy for the Mazda Road to Indy. An accomplished karter, Pigot made the step into cars via a Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shootout in 2009, followed by victory in the following year’s BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda which earned him another MAZDASPEED Driver Development scholarship award to move into USF2000. He narrowly missed out on the USF2000 title in each of the following two years but, after snagging one race win in his rookie year of Pro Mazda, went on to earn another championship and scholarship prize in 2014 to facilitate his graduation into Indy Lights for 2015.

Remaining with Brownsburg, Ind.-based Juncos Racing, Pigot finished a strong third in the first two races of the season at St. Petersburg, Fla. He impressed again at Long Beach, rising to second after being relegated to fifth from his front row starting position while avoiding an incident at Turn One. One week later at Barber he was untouchable, winning both races from the pole. The wins enabled 21-year-old Pigot to grasp the points lead from Dubai-based Briton Ed Jones, who, along with the European open-wheel powerhouse Carlin team, had begun his North American career in style with three consecutive victories.

Jones, 20, has every intention of working his way back to the front at Indianapolis, along with teammate and ex-F1 driver Max Chilton, who was delighted to claim his first podium result last time out in Alabama.

Fellow Englishman Jack Harvey also is sure to be a prominent force for seven-time Indy Lights championship-winning team Schmidt Peterson Motorsports with Curb-Agajanian. The former British Formula 3 champion finished second in the 2014 Indy Lights championship, losing out only on a tie-breaker of second-place finishes, and has finished second again in four of the five races run so far this season. Harvey, who finished on the podium in both races on the Indy road course last year, is now aiming for the top step.

Rookies Felix Serralles (Belardi Auto Racing), from Ponce, Puerto Rico, and RC Enerson (Schmidt Peterson), from New Port Richey, Fla., already have podium finishes to their credit this year, while Pigot’s Juncos Racing teammate Kyle Kaiser, from Santa Clara, Calif., has displayed prodigious pace without yet achieving commensurate results. He intends to set that record straight during Rounds Six and Seven this week.

Watch out too for former Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship Powered by Mazda title-winner Sean Rayhall, from Winston, Ga., who made an impressive Indy Lights debut at Barber for 8Star Motorsports.

The Mazda Grand Prix of Indianapolis Presented by Cooper Tires will commence with a pair of 60-minute promoter test sessions today (Wednesday, May 5), followed by two 45-minute practices tomorrow. The "official" portion of the weekend continues with qualifying at 12:00 noon East Coast time on Friday, May 7, and the first of two races later in the afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Following a 15-minute warmup at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, Round Seven of the 16-race season will start at 1:25 p.m., immediately before the Verizon IndyCar Series headline event. Live timing and commentary for all sessions will be available on the new Mazda Road to Indy App and at indylights.com.

Alberico and Urrutia Head 22-Strong Pro Mazda Field
The Pro Mazda competitors will contest a triple-header on the Indianapolis Grand Prix circuit, including a make-up race following postponement of the scheduled second race last month at NOLA Motorsports Park in Louisiana due to severe weather.

Californian Alberico concluded his deal to remain with Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing only a few weeks before the start of the Pro Mazda season, but he didn’t allow the lack of preparation to hinder his progress. Alberico, who finished a strong third in his rookie campaign in 2014, romped to a pair of victories on the streets of St. Petersburg to claim the early championship lead. The team struggled for pace at NOLA, where Alberico finished a disappointing sixth in an extremely competitive field, but bounced back two weeks ago at Barber Motorsports Park to claim a fourth and another race win which allowed him to maintain a slender eight-point lead as the expanded 22-car field heads to Indy. Alberico, in particular, is looking forward to his return to Indianapolis after securing two podium finishes last year.

The next five positions in the points table currently are held by Pro Mazda rookies, headed by the Team Pelfrey pair of Santiago "Santi" Urrutia, from Uruguay, and Patricio "Pato" O’Ward, who hails originally from Monterrey, Mexico, but now is based and attends school in San Antonio, Texas. O’Ward, incidentally, celebrates his 16th birthday today.

Urrutia, who has competed in Europe for the past four seasons, has been a revelation since switching his attention to North America, winning once at NOLA and adding three more podium finishes. O’Ward, meanwhile, made his debut for the team during last fall’s Chris Griffis Memorial Mazda Road to Indy test, in which he impressed by posting the fastest time.

O’Ward, with three top-five finishes to his name, heads a group of five drivers who are separated by just six points: Frenchmen Florian Latorre (Cape Motorsports), who won the 2014 USF2000 championship; Timothe Buret (Juncos Racing), who took a second at Barber; Malaysian Weiron Tan (Andretti Autosport), the polesitter at NOLA and winner of Race One at Barber; and Canadian Garett Grist (Juncos Racing), who won twice during his rookie campaign in 2014.

Jose Gutierrez (Juncos Racing), from Monterrey, Mexico, and Daniel Burkett (Cape Motorsports), from Winnipeg, Man., Canada, also have podium finishes to their credit already in what is proving to be an extremely competitive season. Indeed, the level will rise still further for this weekend’s Cooper Tires Pro Mazda Grand Prix of Indianapolis with the late addition of Scott Hargrove. The talented Canadian, who won the 2013 USF2000 championship and finished a close second in the 2014 Pro Mazda title-chase, including a pair of wins at Indianapolis, had intended to step up this year into Indy Lights, in which he ran well in the first two races in Florida, but has been obliged to reset his sights and now has joined JDC MotorSports for this weekend’s trio of races. An influx of entries for Indianapolis also includes USF2000 race winner Victor Franzoni, who will make his debut with M1 Racing.

The Pro Mazda contingent will begin their weekend with a pair of one-hour promoter test sessions today (May 6), followed by two official practice sessions at 9:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. on Friday, and the first of three races – the grid for which was set last month at NOLA, prior to the rain-out – at 5:55 p.m. Qualifying for the second race will take place at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, May 8, with the green flag at 2:00 p.m. The final race will start at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday. All times are local. Live timing and commentary for all sessions will be available on the new Mazda Road to Indy App and at promazda.com.

Consistent Pace the Key for USF2000 Points Leader Jake Eidson
The old adage "To finish first, first you have to finish" has been followed to a tee by championship leader Jake Eidson. The youngster from Littleton, Colo., previously a champion in both the Skip Barber Racing Series and the F1600 Championship Series, won the opening two races of the season on the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., and since then has notched a quartet of third-place finishes to ensure he holds the series points lead prior to the two 30-minute races which will comprise the Mazda USF2000 Grand Prix of Indianapolis.

The Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing pair of Nico Jamin, from Rouen, France, and Aaron Telitz, from Birchwood, Wis., have combined to win three of the last four races, but haven’t been able to match Eidson’s consistency. They currently trail by 11 and 21 points, respectively.

Fourth place in the standings is held by the best-placed rookie, Anthony Martin, from Perth, Western Australia. The Aussie, whose Van Diemen-Mazda is fielded by veteran IndyCar crew chief/team manager John Cummiskey, has impressed with a handful of top-five runs, capped by a fine second last time out in the rain at Barber Motorsports Park.

Fellow rookie Parker Thompson, from Red Deer, Alb., Canada, also has impressed with a sequence of three top-five finishes for JDC MotorSports, and seems to be improving with every outing under the expert guidance of 2004 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice.

Others to watch this week include another young Australian, Luke Gabin (Team Pelfrey), who has moved into USF2000 on the strength of a MAZDASPEED scholarship after winning the 2014 Skip Barber Racing Championship Shootout, and Noblesville, Ind., native Sam Chastain, who is making his USF2000 debut with JDC MotorSports after showing well in last year’s F1600 Championship series.

After two 60-minute test sessions today, the USF2000 contingent will benefit from another pair of 30-minute practice periods tomorrow, May 7. Qualifying will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 8, followed by the first of two races at 1:00 p.m. Race Two will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 9. All times are local. Live timing and commentary for all sessions will be available on the new Mazda Road to Indy App and at usf2000.com.

John Pew Takes Best-Ever Qualifying Effort for Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

3e16af30-aabd-4e27-9afb-a70e142780c4.jpgMonterey, Calif. (2 May 2015) – It was a big day for Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian on Saturday when John Pew took the No. 60 Honda-powered Ligier JS P2 to fourth on the grid for the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The result marks Pew’s career-best qualifying position since his 2007 prototype debut with Michael Shank Racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Pew continually improved his lap times on each lap of the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship 15-minute qualifying session and set his quickest lap time of 1:19.651-seconds on his 10th lap of the 11 lap run.

“I was just pushing it as hard as I could,” said Pew following the session. “This Honda Ligier and this track go really well together. I’m not quite at the limit although I found the limit in a couple of corners! It was good. It’s a great car, and a great track. Ozz (Negri, co-driver) has been a great friend, a great coach, and a mentor and a guy I look up to in many ways. He’s very helpful. We don’t really know what will happen tomorrow. With all of these classes there could be many yellows. Our car tends to start out a little bit slower because it’s light but we’ll see what happens in the race.”

Pew’s co-driver Ozz Negri was beaming from pit lane when Pew leapt to fourth in the grid order. 32f00fa4-41e2-456a-88b4-dd46bfe06bab.jpg

“I am just so super happy for John,” smiled Negri. “We had an early morning practice session and we worked all the way up until just before qualifying looking at video, looking at data, and notes and John did exactly what we wanted him to do today!”

The No. 60 machine returned to pit lane following the run and when Pew climbed out of the car, he was welcomed with high-fives, hugs, and smiles from everyone on the Michael Shank Racing team.

“I’m really pleased, it’s the best he’s ever done and he deserves it,” said Team Owner Mike Shank. “We think the car is pretty good. It takes a little while for our tires to come in but that’s the only downside compared to a Daytona Prototype. We are managing our expectations for tomorrow but I’m really happy for John (Pew) today. He puts in as much effort as anybody I know. He has come so far, worked so hard, and one of the reasons we went to a P2 car was so that we could have a car that’s a little easier to manage and it is certainly designed for a track like this so it matches up well. It also speaks to the potential for John and I’m excited to see where it goes this season.”

Pew will take the green flag for the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix at 1:00 PM local time (4:00 PM ET). FOX Sports 1 will carry live coverage of the race.

6f4b072d-5fef-444a-8f6a-90750125ab19.jpgBased in Columbus, Ohio, Michael Shank Racing was formed in 1989 when Mike Shank first began driving racing cars professionally. Shank retired from the cockpit in 1997 to focus his efforts on running the team, which quickly found success in the Champ Car Toyota Atlantic Championship. With several race wins under his belt, Shank was named as Team Owner of the Year twice in four years. Michael Shank Racing joined the Rolex Sports Car Series in 2004 as the team proved as quick in endurance racing as in the sprint formula car format. Michael Shank Racing scored a debut Rolex Series win in 2006 at Miller Motorsports Park, and fans selected the victory as the 2007 Rolex “Moment of the Year.” After opening the 2008 season with a front-row sweep of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, the team closed out the year taking wins in the final two races of the year.

The team scored a dramatic victory in the 50th Anniversary Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2012, and backed that race-winning effort up with a run to third place with the second team entry.

Davis, Liddell Score Second Straight In Stevenson Camaro In Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge At Mazda Raceway

Davis, Liddell Score Second Straight In Stevenson Camaro

In Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge At Mazda Raceway

Carbonell, Dwyer Give Mazda Fifth Straight Home Track Victory With Last-Lap Pass

MONTEREY, Calif. (May 2, 2015) – Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis used an early strategic call and late-race muscle to give Stevenson Motorsports its second consecutive Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge victory Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Liddell prevailed in a three-car, 13-minute sprint to the finish, with the No. 6 Stevenson Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R winning over the Ford Mustang Boss 302R of Billy Johnson and the Nissan 370Z of BJ Zacharias by just .552 seconds.

It was the first of two thrilling finishes in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race, with Andrew Carbonell capping an improbable last-lap charge to take the ST victory. The win provided an emotional storybook win for teammate USMC Staff Sgt. Liam Dwyer. Dwyer’s second career win came with USMC Sgt. Aaron Denning – who saved Dwyer’s life after the explosion in Afghanistan and was on hand at the track with Dwyer for the first time – looking on.

The overall win by Liddell and Davis was decided by some strong driving and a savvy pit stop.

“The Mustang came out of nowhere – they were on new tires – and they were the strongest car at the end,” said Liddell, who scored his sixth career victory in the series. “I could see Billy was really strong under breaking, but I was able to defend my position and stay ahead of him at the end. This is a track where we traditionally struggle and didn’t come in with high expectations, but we kept the hammer down and stayed smart.”

A key call came only 25 minutes into the two and a half hour race, when Ray Mason in No. 76 Compass360 Subaru was stranded after contact with Charles Putman in the No. 09 Automatic Racing Aston Martin Vantage. Anticipating a caution, Stevenson Motorsports team manager Mike Johnson called Davis into the pits.

“That changed our strategy vs. everybody else,” Davis said. “It put me in a frustrating position – having to come from way in the back – but it was a lot of fun working clean but hard against a great bunch of drivers. I was able to get us back to the front, and Robin did a tremendous job to hang on and win.”

The two Stevenson Camaros were running 1-2 following a restart with 36 minutes remaining. Lawson Aschenbach led in the No. 9 Camaro started on the pole by Matt Bell, which had dominated the race up until that point. With the Zacharias Nissan closing in, and Johnson also gaining ground after taking on tires during the caution, Liddell passed his teammate for the lead with 22 minutes remaining.

Glenn Nixon then went off course and got stuck in the gravel in the LAP No. 51 MINI John Cooper Works, bringing out the fourth and final caution.

“I didn’t have power for him, but Multimatic called perfect race strategy, getting me tires near the end,” Johnson said. “We were able to charge to the front, and we were there on the brakes and the corners, but not quite enough to get it done on the straights. Who knows? Maybe another lap or two, I could have got him, but not today.”

Zacharias held on for third, .836 seconds back, in the Nissan 370Z started by teammate Brad Jaeger.

“I felt if the race stayed green the rest of the way we had something for the Camaro,” said Zacharias. “We didn’t need that last yellow. It was good to get some points and get back into the championship.”

The victory enabled Davis and Liddell to unofficially open a nine-point lead in the standings (102-93) over Matt and Hugh Plumb, who finished fourth in the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Porsche 911.

Carbonell Scores Storybook Finish For Dwyer With Last-Lap Pass

It would be hard to top the script of Dwyer’s first ST victory, when he teamed with Tom Long to win at Lime Rock Park on Memorial Day weekend in 2014 on the third anniversary of his near-fatal injuries sustained while serving in Afghanistan.

But Dwyer did just that on Saturday. Co-driver Carbonell passed Long for the lead on the final lap with only two turns remaining with Dwyer and Denning – who waved the green flag to start the race – cheering from the team’s pit box.

“I didn’t think the emotions from Memorial Day could be matched,” Dwyer said. “But to have Sgt. Denning here – and see me win like this, to see what this has done for my recovery – is hard to describe. It seems too good to be true.”

Dwyer was running 12th when he pitted to turn the No. 26 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 over to Carbonell. Rejoining the race in 22nd, Carbonell then went to work.

He was running fourth but behind the lead trio when the final caution waved with 18 minutes remaining. Carbonell closed in at the restart. He got around Christian Szymczak to take second racing to the white flag, and then passed Long for the lead in Turn 10 on the final lap, holding off his teammate by .247 seconds.

Carbonell scored his third consecutive victory at Mazda Raceway – and fourth in five years – while Mazda recorded its fifth straight triumph at its home track.

“At the end of the day, it was no easy job catching up to that lead pack,” Carbonell said. “Once I did, it was all a matter of putting it all together. It was fair, clean racing. Tom made a little mistake, and I was able to get by. It’s good, hard racing in the Continental Tire Challenge.”

Long held on for second in the No. 25 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 started by Britt Casey Jr., a 17-year-old racing for the second time in the series. Szymczak took third in the No. 34 Alara Racing Mazda MX-5 started from the pole by Justin Piscitell.

“I slid a little coming out of Turn 9 on the last lap, and that enabled Andrew to get a run on me and get by in Turn 10,” Long said. “Overall, it was a 1-2 for the team and a podium sweep for Mazda. It was also a great race for Britt, running here for the first time.”

Unofficially, Greg Liefooghe and Eric Zimmerman – who finished 13th in the No. 83 Next Level European Porsche Cayman – are tied for the ST points lead with Ted Giovanis and David Murry – 12th in the No. 64 Team TGM BMW 328i – with 81 points each. Entering the race sixth in the standings, 20 points behind, Carbonell and Dwyer are now third but only three points back with 78.

TUDOR Championship Classes Combined At Mazda Raceway

All four TUDOR United SportsCar Championship classes will race together at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for this weekend’s Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by Mazda.
Unlike last year’s event, which had a pair of two-hour races for the two prototype and GT classes, the two-hour, 40-minute race on Sunday at 4 p.m. ET combines the four classes – Prototype (P), Prototype Challenge (PC), GT Le Mans (GTLM) and GT Daytona (GTD).
This will be the TUDOR Championship’s second visit to California over a three-weekend span. The recent Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at Long Beach highlighted the P and GTLM classes in a 100-minute race.

Sacramento’s Pruett, Hand To Co-Drive In Home Race

Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates features a pair of Sacramento-area drivers, Scott Pruett and Joey Hand, in the No. 01 Ford EcoBoost/Riley.
Pruett, who hails from Auburn, California and recently turned 55, is a 10-time champion and leads all drivers with 59 major sports car victories. He also is an award-winning wine maker; Wine Spectator recently scored his Syrah at 96 – the highest-rated Syrah in the nation. Pruett personally operates and oversees the winery, Pruett Vineyards in Auburn. Pruett finished third in last year’s race at Mazda Raceway, co-driving with Memo Rojas.
Hand, who makes his home in the California capital city, joined Pruett in winning the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona (one of Pruett’s five overall victories in the event). Hand comes to the team after being the lone American driver to compete in the German DTM championship. Pruett and Hand are coming off their best finish of the season, taking second at Long Beach, and are third in the Prototype point standings.

Hometown Hero: Jonathan Bomarito, a native of Monterey, joins Tristan Nunez in the No. 70 Mazda Prototype, powered by a SKYACTIV Diesel engine. The team’s No. 07 entry features Joel Miller of Hesperia, California, co-driving with Tom Long. Bomarito had his best finish of the season – eighth – at Long Beach.

Brotherly Love: Ricky and Jordan Taylor dominated the race at Long Beach in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP owned by their father, Wayne Taylor. Ricky won the TOTAL Pole Award and joined his brother in leading all but two laps in the 100-minute event.

Cameron’s Firsts at Home Track: Dane Cameron, a native of Glen Ellen, California, has recorded two major career firsts at Mazda Raceway. He won his first TUDOR Championship race at the circuit in 2014, winning the GTD class for Turner Motorsport en route to capturing the GTD championship.
He also scored his first GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series victory there in 2012, winning the GT class for Team Sahlen. Cameron will be looking for his first Prototype triumph this weekend, joining Eric Curran in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering/Team Fox Corvette DP.

Threes Are Wild: The No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Corvette DP team comes to Mazda Raceway with three consecutive third-place finishes for Michael Valiante and Richard Westbrook at Daytona, Sebring and Long Beach.

Risi Competizione Ferrari Back-To-Back Winner Of DEKRA Green Challenge

The No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari F458 Italia of Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer take a pair of streaks into the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by Mazda. The team finished second in the GTLM class at both Sebring and Long Beach, while winning the DEKRA Green Challenge Award at both races.
The DEKRA Green Challenge Award is presented to the most environmentally clean, fast and efficient GTLM competitor at each TUDOR Championship race. The DEKRA Green Challenge award is determined through Green Racing protocols established by the United States Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International as part of an overarching strategic alliance with IMSA.
The Green Challenge scores are calculated each lap of the race from “clean, fast and efficient” data provided by the timing and scoring system plus the observed energy consumption – or fuel used – of each car’s pit refueling tank sensors.
“The DEKRA Green Challenge Award is all about efficiency with the pit stops, fuel consumption and the amount of time you’re in the pits,” said Risi team manager David Sims. “Basically, if you spend a lot of time in the pits, you’re never ever going to win the award. Your stops have to be fast and quick, so the less time you spend with every pit stop, the better it is. It’s down to the crew and the engineering on the fuel consumption, as well. They have a meter on the fuel tanks and it registers how much you put in and how much fuel you use during the event.”

After 14 Different Pole Winners, Is It Time For The First Repeat In GTLM?

Bill Auberlen captured the pole for the recent Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at Long Beach, keeping alive a streak of 14 different pole winners since the class debuted at the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona.
Auberlen won the pole in the No. 25 IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4 GTLM, and then joined Dirk Werner in giving BMW Team RLL its first TUDOR Championship victory, ending a winless streak for the team dating back to mid-2013 when it raced in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.
GTLM drivers entered in Sunday’s race yet to win a pole are Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner; Team Falken Tire’s Bryan Sellers and Wolf Henzler; BMW Team RLL’s Lucas Luhr; and Porsche North America’s Patrick Pilet and Joerg Bergmeister.
Defending Winners Have Points Lead: Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen opened up the season with back-to-back victories in the No. 3 Corvette C7.R. A year ago, the pair won at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as part of a four-race winning streak. Garcia and Magnussen maintained a 10-point lead in the GTLM standings following a third-place finish at Long Beach. Class winners Auberlen and Werner are second in the points (103-93), while Ferrari drivers Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer are third with 89 points.

TUDOR Championship, Etc.

Porsche Driver Doing Double Duty: Michael Christensen is set for a busy weekend, entered in both of the Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSRs. The Danish driver will team with Pilet in the No. 911 entry, and will partner with Bergmeister in the No. 912. Pilet gave the team its best finish this season at Long Beach, placing fourth with Frederic Makowiecki.

Top of the Charts: Luhr is the leading sports car winner at Mazda Raceway, winning seven races in three ALMS classes. He won in GT in 2002 and 2003; P2 in 2005 and 2006, and P1 in 2008, 2012 and 2013. Luhr now shares the No. 24 IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4 GTLM with John Edwards – a three-time Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge winner at the circuit.

Still Perfect: Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi hold a three-point lead atop the Prototype point standings in defense of the title they won in 2014. The drivers of the Action Express Racing No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP have completed every possible lap since the TUDOR Championship debuted in 2014, logging 20,569 miles.

Bay Area’s Guasch Seeks Third Straight Prototype Challenge Victory

Mike Guasch quickly shook off any rust that accumulated after a year’s sabbatical from racing. The businessman/driver from Pleasant Hill, California opened up the season with back-to-back Prototype Challenge (PC) victories in the Florida endurance classics at Daytona and Sebring.
Guasch returns to his home track with the PC points lead, joining Tom Kimber-Smith in the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports ORECA FLM09.
“Molecule Mike” took a hiatus from racing to concentrate on business after winning the 2013 ALMS PC title. He owns a specialty chemical manufacturer company, Molecule Labs. In the past, he built a national brand of protective chemicals for the outdoor market, which he sold to DuPont in 2005.
Guasch and Kimber-Smith enter Sunday’s race with a six-point lead (72-66) over defending PC champs Jon Bennett and Colin Braun, who opened the year with a pair of runner-up finishes in the No. 54 CORE autosport ORECA FLM09.

Starworks Defends Victory: Renger van der Zande and Mirco Schultis scored their first career PC victories at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. They went on to win three races for Starworks Motorsport, with van der Zande finishing second in the final point standings.
The pair return in the No. 8 Starworks ORECA FLM09, carrying the classic Martini livery.

Vegas Drivers Seek Jackpot: Todd Slusher and John Falb will be testing their skill at Mazda Raceway, with the Las Vegas duo making their TUDOR Championship debut in the No. 16 BAR1 Motorsports Edvisors.com/Jet Suite ORECA FLM09.
Falb is the reigning Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda Lites 1 Masters champion. The ONE Motorsports teammates finishing 1-2 in Lites 2 in the series’ most recent race at NOLA Motorsports Park.

2014 Pole Winner Returns: Bruno Junqueira claimed three TOTAL Pole Awards in PC last season, including setting fast time at Mazda Raceway. He returns in the No. 11 RSR Racing AutoMaxUSA ORECA FLM09, co-driving with Chris Cumming.

CJ Wilson Racing Set For Grand Sport Debut

C.J. Wilson is expected to visit Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on Friday – the same day that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim lefty is scheduled to take to the mound against the San Francisco Giants. CJ Wilson Racing will compete in the Grand Sport (GS) class for the first time this weekend.
Marc Miller and Tyler McQuarrie will drive the Fantasy Garage/Alpinestars Porsche 911 carrying No. 33 – Wilson’s jersey number. The pair raced a No. 3 Mazda MX-5 in the Street Tuner (ST) class for the team in the past, with McQuarrie finishing second in ST at Mazda Raceway in 2014. Chad McCumbee and Stevan McAleer will continue to drive the No. 5 Modspace Mazda in ST this weekend. They finished third at Mazda Raceway in 2014.
“This partnership is the first stage in an exciting new phase for the team,” Wilson said. “Discussions with a number of potential customers have led us to look at a wider number of competition options and we feel there are a several exciting areas for expansion.”

Tight Battles In GS, ST Point Standings

There’s no margin for error atop both the GS and ST standings entering Saturday’s event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Sebring winners Andrew Davis and Robin Liddell hold a two-point lead in GS over Daytona winners Matt and Hugh Plumb, 67-65. Davis and Liddell pilot the No. 6 Stevenson Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R, while the Plumb brothers are in the No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Porsche 911.
Third in GS – another three points back – are Lawson Aschenbach and Matt Bell, who have a pair of podiums in the No. 9 Stevenson Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R.
ST is even closer, where Greg Liefooghe and Eric Zimmerman lead David Murry and Ted Giovanis by one point, 63-62. Liefooghe and Zimmerman won at Sebring in the No. 83 Porsche Cayman to give Next Level European its first victory. After a career-best third at Daytona in the No. 64 Team MGM BMW 328i, Giovanis did even better at Sebring, joining Murry in finishing second.

Carbonell A Three-Time Winner At Mazda Raceway

Andrew Carbonell definitely knows his way around Mazda Raceway. The driver of the No. 26 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 has won three times in the past four years, including the last two. He has podium finishes in all five of his races at the circuit, finishing second in 2012 and third in 2009.
Carbonell will co-drive with USMC Staff Sgt. Liam Dwyer, who made his series debut last year at Mazda Raceway. The pair have top-10 finishes at Daytona and Sebring and are sixth in the ST points.

Continental Tire Challenge, Etc.

The MINI John Cooper Works team will have three new drivers. Indy Lights driver Zack Meyer joins Remo Ruscitti in the No. 37 MINI John Cooper Works, while Wei Lu and Glenn Nixon pilot the No. 52. Ruscitti finished 18th in the team’s debut at Sebring.
Defending GS champion Trent Hindman won last year’s race from the pole for Fall-Line Motorsports. He returns with Ashley Freiberg in the No. 46 BMW M3.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 29, 2015) – After posting their third consecutive podium in as many races, Visit Florida Racing is looking for a victory at the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on May 3. The Daytona Beach based Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype team has put the rest of the competition on notice after their third place effort in the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase in Long Beach.

The NO. 90 VISITFLORIDA.COM Corvette DP is the lone entry in the prototype class to have finished on the podium in each of the first three events of the 2015 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. The team now sits second in the championship standings, trailing the Action Express Racing NO. 5 Corvette DP by only three points as the series makes the second and final stop on the west coast swing.

Michael Valiante made a daring pass on defending series champion Christian Fittipaldi on the opening lap of the Patrón Showcase, positioning the NO. 90 in third position on a track where passing is extremely difficult. Co-driver Richard Westbrook took the wheel just past halfway and turned lap times as fast, or faster than the leaders, and brought the car home on the podium.

While the team is in an excellent position to contend for the 2015 championship, driver Michael Valiante knows the team must stay on top of their game to continue the title march.

"We’ve had three solid runs," said Valiante. "Daytona and Sebring were not without their struggles, but the team was able to persevere and we came out on the podium each time. Long Beach went well, we were able to advance from our starting position which is something not many teams were able to do. We have to keep getting faster and keep fighting and the wins will come."

Valiante’s co-driver Richard Westbrook knows the team is in a much better position a this point in the season than they were one-year ago, however, he is always mindful that the competition will improve throughout the season, and his team must do the same.

"You can never sit back and be comfortable," said Westbrook. "We’re in a great position right now, but we have to continue improving and finding additional speed in our Chevrolet Corvette DP. The second we take our eyes off the challenge of getting better, the competition is going to blow past us.

"We all know the task at hand going to Laguna Seca. It’s a tough track but one that we qualified extremely well for last year and we hope to do the same again this year."

While Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca offers a few more passing opportunities than the streets of Long Beach, teams must still qualify well to consider themselves contenders for the victory.

"Track position is going to be important everywhere this season," said team owner Troy Flis. "The competition is so close, lap times are hundredths of a second apart throughout these races so getting a strong starting position is going to be vital for success. Our team is off to a strong start right now, and we want to maintain that momentum at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca."

The Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix will feature a new format this season. In 2014, there were two, two-hour events. This season, the race will feature all four classes of competition (GTD, PC, GTLM, P) on the track at the same time for one, two-hour and forty-minute race.

The IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship competitors are on track Friday, May 1 at 11:30 a.m. PT for the first of three practice sessions in preparation for the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix. Qualifying for the prototype class will take place Saturday, May 2 at 5:30 p.m. PT.

DRIVER QUOTES NO. 90 VISITFLORIDA.COM CHEVROLET CORVETTE DP

RICHARD WESTBROOK

On racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca…
"Racing at Laguna Seca is great. The track has a rich history in all forms of racing, so it’s great to be able to compete there in our VISITFLORIDA.COM Chevrolet Corvette DP."

On the challenges of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca… "You have a lot of passing opportunities which is great, but it also means that you have opportunities to be passed, or sometimes people think they can get position on you and pass, but they really can’t. You have to stay alert, take advantage of opportunities to pass when they present themselves, and push the car hard for two hours and forty minutes."

On being second in the TUDOR Championship points… "It’s a great position to be in at this stage of the season. We would still like to find some additional speed with our Corvette DP, but we’ve had solid results and we’re the only team to be on the podium in each event. If we can continue that and find a little more speed we’ll be the team to beat for the championship."

MICHAEL VALIANTE

On racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca… "The racing is incredible no matter what series is competing at Laguna Seca. I’ve competed in a different classes and it’s just a track that really lends itself to the driver. It features quick speeds, fast corners, tight corners, blind spots, everything a road course should have, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has." On the challenges of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca… "The track has a tendency to be really dusty. Guys will run off and add to that, so there is a huge premium on mechanical grip. Fortunately for us, our team has been getting better and better each race at finding ways to improve mechanical grip and keep the speed in our Chevrolet Corvette DP so we should be in a great position on Sunday afternoon."

On being second in the TUDOR Championship points… "Being in second, trailing the leaders by only three points is a great position to be in. At this point last year we were playing catch up, and we still finished third at seasons end. If we keep executing at the level we have been so far this year, keep scoring podiums and win a couple races, we will control our own destiny. Regardless, its been great this year having everyone on the same page and I think that comes from the familiarity of a second year with the entire team intact."

Taylor Brothers Hang On To Win On Streets Of Long Beach

Taylor Brothers Hang On To Win On Streets Of Long Beach

Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP Scores Victory In Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase

LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 18, 2015) – After flirting with victory in the first two races on the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship calendar, brothers Jordan and Ricky Taylor broke through in a big way Saturday, winning the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at the Long Beach street circuit.

In a classic Chevrolet vs. Ford battle, Jordan Taylor held off a hard-charging Joey Hand in the No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Ford EcoBoost/Riley to win by 3.3 seconds in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP owned by father Wayne Taylor.

It was a rewarding victory for the team after a heartbreaking defeat in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and a runner-up finish in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida.

“I felt confidence the entire weekend,” said Ricky Taylor. “It was nice to have a nice package underneath us, and to be fighting between Corvette and Ford was nice to see. We also got first place points, so it’s the best we could get.”

It was a dominant weekend for Wayne Taylor Racing with Ricky Taylor also winning the TOTAL Pole Award in qualifying Friday. Ricky started the race from the pole and led throughout his opening stint, giving way to Jordan Taylor with 47 minutes remaining in the 100-minute sprint race. Running in the second position, Scott Pruett pitted the No. 01 Ford EcoBoost/Riley one lap later and Hand took over.

Hand inherited the lead on the pit stop exchange, but Jordan Taylor quickly pounced and took the top spot in Turn 1 with 44 minutes remaining. He led the rest of the way, although Hand closed the gap to within one second several times over the final 30 minutes.

The No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Racing Corvette DP team finished third, the third consecutive third-place finish to start the season for co-drivers Richard Westbrook and Michael Valiante. Action Express Racing’s pair of Corvette DPs rounded out the top five with the team’s No. 31 Whelen Corvette DP of Dane Cameron and Eric Curran fourth and the points-leading No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP of Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi fifth.

The entire TUDOR Championship event was run under the green flag – including the race, qualifying and Friday’s two practice sessions.

The Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at Long Beach will be televised on FOX Sports 1 on Sunday, April 19, beginning at 4 p.m. ET.

NEWS AND NOTES

· A drive-time violation in the season-opening Rolex 24 put the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP team in a hole to start the season, but a runner-up finish at Sebring and a win at Long Beach puts the Wayne Taylor Racing team back in the thick of the Prototype championship. The team is tied for fourth in the standings with the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Corvette DP of Cameron and Curran, 11 points behind the series-leading No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP of Fittipaldi and Barbosa (96-85). The No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Racing Corvette DP is second, three points out, with the No. 01 Ford EcoBoost/Riley third, eight points back.

· The No. 0 Claro / TracFone DeltaWing Racing team made its debut at the Long Beach street circuit, but mechanical issues forced the team to retire after 20 laps. The revolutionary prototype co-driven by Katherine Legge and Memo Rojas showed speed much of the weekend, but struggled with an electrical issue shortly after the green flag of Saturday’s race.

· The No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP team completed all 78 laps of the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase, continuing its impressive reliability streak. The team has successfully run every mile of TUDOR Championship competition dating back to the series’ inaugural event, the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

· The next race for the TUDOR Championship will be the Continental Tire Monterey Grand Prix powered by Mazda, on May 3 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

QUOTEBOARD

Jordan Taylor, Driver – No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP

“I knew we’d only have one shot so I went for it; and then from there we were able to evenly pace. I could see him approaching in the fountain, but then pull away on the front straight. I knew what my lap times were and could watch the gap every lap. I knew everything was a tenth here and a tenth there. Thankfully in the final laps we got some separation with some GT cars there and it was more comfortable.”

Scott Pruett, Driver – No. 01 Chip Ganassi Racing w/ Felix Sabates Ford EcoBoost/Riley

“We’re coming off two tough endurances races, a 24 (hour) and a 12 (hour), so your mindset going into this race is completely different. You have to pull it hard right from the green flag and run it hard and try to stay up at the front and do the right things.”

Catherine Crawford, Race Engineer – No. 0 Claro / TracFone DeltaWing Racing

“We’re investigating the cause of the electrical problem. We’re methodically going through everything and fixing things one at a time and unfortunately, something new came up today. That’s why the DeltaWing program is here, to do something different, to think outside of the box. We will find a way to stop the issues that are reoccurring. I’ve come into a new situation and I don’t know all the issues, but I’m going to come in with enthusiasm to fix them. We’ll keep on working until we get it all fixed.”

Troy Flis, Team Owner – No. 90 VisitFlorida.com Racing Corvette DP

“It’s what we need to do, that’s what our goal was. It’s not our day (for a win), yet. We rolled off the truck pretty well with the Visit Florida car, but we just didn’t have the raw speed that we needed to fight for a win. I’m happy with our weekend. That’s what we need to do to win a championship, just keep finishing on the podium and be consistent.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 15, 2015) – Momentum is a word in racing that can carry a significant number of meanings. While the physics definition is certainly applicable, Visit Florida Racing has a different kind of momentum as the 2015 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship invades the challenging streets of Long Beach for the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase.

After posting their second consecutive podium finish in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida, Visit Florida Racing is off to a great start in their championship quest. The strong start was something team owner Troy Flis knew his team could accomplish, and something they had to do to make a serious run at the 2015 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

"When we sat down after Petit Le Mans last year and evaluated our season we had some key areas we wanted to improve," said Flis. "The Twelve Hours of Sebring didn’t go our way last year and as a result we put ourselves in an early season hole.

"This year we went to Daytona and improved our finishing position and we went to Sebring and backed that finish up with another third place result. A fast start was something we wanted to accomplish and hats off to our guys, we’ve done that and we’re headed to Long Beach in a great position."

The NO. 90 VISITFLORIDA.COM Racing Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype ranks second in the team standings as the series moves to one of the more difficult events on the calendar, a challenge that driver Michael Valiante knows the team is ready to face.

"Long Beach is a really tough race," said Valiante. "You have to have speed, which after Sebring we know that we’ve got. Qualifying is really important because of the difficulty in passing. Long Beach is extremely unforgiving with the temporary barriers and walls that they bring in so you have to be sharp and focused and you can’t make any mistakes or your day is going to be cut really short.

"As a team this year, we’ve done a great job overcoming in-race struggles and scoring two podiums, now it’s time to adjust our focus to sprint races and keeping the positive momentum rolling."

Flis echoed the confidence of his driver, while understanding the challenges the entire team will face at Long Beach.

"The strong start to the year is exactly what we wanted to achieve," said Flis. "Now we have to focus on putting the best car possible under Richard and Michael and making sure that we execute flawlessly in the pits. We are only going to have one opportunity to get it right in Long Beach so we have to nail it.

"The Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase is our shortest race of the year but its one of our biggest events in terms of the attention it receives and the history of racing on the streets of Long Beach. We are in an excellent position to get our first win of the season."

Visit Florida Racing is part of a top-three sweep of the team prototype standings for the Corvette DP’s and Coyote Cars heading into the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase.

Prototypes, GTLM Classes Headline Return To Long Beach

The TUDOR United SportsCar Championship returns to the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach for Round 3 of the 2015 season, the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase on Saturday, April 18.
The 100-minute event will showcase two TUDOR Championship classes – Prototype (P) and GT Le Mans (GTLM) — as part of the 41st Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.
A year ago, the event was part of the inaugural TUDOR Championship season. Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas took their second P class victory of the season for Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, while Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen scored the first GTLM triumph for the new Corvette C7.R.
Rojas now drives for DeltaWing Racing, sharing the No. 0 Claro Video/TracFone DWC13 with Katherine Legge in what will be the unique prototype’s first event on a street course.
Pruett returns in the No. 01 Ford EcoBoost/Riley with a new co-driver Joey Hand. The Chip Ganassi Racing sports car team is a perfect two-for-two at Long Beach. Pruett won with Luis Diaz in a GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series race in 2006.
Garcia and Magnussen return to Long Beach riding a three-race TUDOR Championship win streak after taking the GTLM class in both the Rolex 24 At Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida to open the 2015 season.

Action Express Maintains Perfect TUDOR Championship Reliability Record

Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa continued their perfect record when they joined Sebastien Bourdais in winning the recent Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida. The pair have completed every possible racing lap in TUDOR United SportsCar Championship competition, beginning with their victory in the debut event – the 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona.
Since then, the drivers of the Action Express Racing No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP have racked up four victories, logged more than 10,000 racing miles, and won both the TUDOR Championship and Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup in 2014. Barbosa and Fittipaldi enter Long Beach leading the Prototype (P) standings, leading non-entered IndyCar star Scott Dixon by four points and VisitFlorida.com Racing drivers Richard Westbrook and Michael Valiante by seven points.
Brothers Ricky and Jordan Taylor finished second at Long Beach in 2014, coming up short by 0.759 seconds. They return in Wayne Taylor Racing’s No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP.
Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian will be in the spotlight in Friday’s qualifying (8:30 p.m. ET, live on IMSA.com). Ozz Negri qualified second for the team at Long Beach in 2014. Negri opened the season by capturing the pole for the Rolex 24 At Daytona in the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian Ligier JS P2/Honda. With the qualifying driver also starting the race, look for co-driver John Pew to qualify on Friday.

Corvette Returns To Scene Of First Victory For C7.R; Luhr Seeks Fifth Win In BMW

Corvette Racing brought a brand-new car and plenty of history to last year’s Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase. Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen went on to record the first victory for the Corvette C7.R, giving the team its fifth victory in eight races at Long Beach since 2007.
Last year’s triumph opened the floodgates for the yellow No. 3 C7.R, with Garcia and Magnussen rolling off four consecutive victories.
The team has a strong heritage at Long Beach, with five victories in the lead GT category since the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón made its debut on the circuit in 2007. The team reeled off three consecutive GT1 victories from 2007-09, with Magnussen winning in 2008. Oliver Gavin – who shares the team’s No. 4 Corvette C7.R with Tommy Milner – won in 2008. Gavin and Milner also won in ALMS GT in 2012.
The addition of Lucas Luhr to the BMW Team RLL lineup boosts that team’s winning heritage at Long Beach. Luhr is the event’s leading overall sports car winner in the event with four victories. Luhr – who now drives the No. 24 IHG Rewards Club BMW Z4 GTLM with John Edwards – won with Audi in 2008 and with Pickett Racing from 2011 through 2013.
BMW has a pair of GT victories at the circuit. Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller triumphed in 2011, while Bill Auberlen and Maxime Martin were the 2013 winners. Auberlen lives in Redondo Beach, less than 15 miles from Long Beach.
Porsche North America has shifted its lineup. Patrick Pilet will join Frederic Makowiecki in the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR, while Richard Lietz will co-drive the team’s No. 912 with Joerg Bergmeister. Lietz is the team’s lone returnee from the 2014 Long Beach event, finishing fourth.
Bergmeister is a two-time winner for Flying Lizard Motorsports at Long Beach. After winning with Patrick Long in the ALMS GT2 class in 2009, the pair won in GT the following year in a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR.
Risi Competizione, which fields the No. 62 Ferrari F458 Italia for Giancarlo Fisichella and Pierre Kaffer, won the GT2 class at Long Beach in 2007.

Can ‘No-Repeat’ Pole Streak Continue In GTLM Qualifying?

When Porsche North America driver Frederic Makowiecki set the fastest time in qualifying for the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida, he became the 13th different pole winner in 13 TUDOR Championship GT Le Mans (GTLM) races.
Can that streak continue through the Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at Long Beach in the highly competitive class?
Porsche North America’s Patrick Pilet, Richard Lietz and Joerg Bergmeister have yet to win a pole in GTLM competition, joined by BMW Team RLL’s Lucas Luhr, Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner; Team Falken Tire’s Bryan Sellers and Wolf Henzler; and Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner.
Corvette Racing won both the pole and race in the class in 2014 at Long Beach. Fast qualifier Jan Magnussen also won the GT1 pole for the team in 2008, while teammate Oliver Gavin led GT1 qualifying in 2007. Henzler was the GT2 pole winner in 2009.
In addition to Magnussen and Gavin, other GTLM pole winners entered at Long Beach are Risi Competizione Ferrari F458 Italia drivers Pierre Kaffer and Giancarlo Fisichella; Corvette Racing’s Antonio Garcia; and BMW Team RLL’s John Edwards.
The Prototype Challenge (PC) and GT Daytona (GTD) classes will return to action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, joining their P and GTLM counterparts at the Continental Tire Grand Prix of Monterey powered by Mazda.
This year’s race will feature all four classes competing in a single two-hour, 40-minute event (Sunday, May 3, live on FOX Sports 1 at 4 p.m. ET). The P/GTLM and PC/GTD classes ran separate, two-hour races at Mazda Raceway last year.
