Ford GT Takes Lone Star Le Mans GTLM Pole,

First In WeatherTech Championship For Briscoe

Porsche Takes Sixth GTD Pole, Fourth TOTAL Pole Award For Riberas

AUSTIN, Texas (Sept. 16, 2016) – As difficult as it may be to believe, given his record of success, it wasn’t until Friday’s qualifying session for Saturday’s two-hour, 40-minute Lone Star Le Mans that Ryan Briscoe earned his first career pole position in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition.

The Aussie checked that accomplishment off the list courtesy of a best qualifying lap of 2 minutes, 4.188 seconds (98.5 mph) in the No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT in the 15-minute GT Le Mans (GTLM) class qualifying session.

While it was Briscoe’s first, it was the third for the No. 67 team, as teammate Richard Westbrook took poles at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in May and the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen in July. And it was the fourth pole of the year for the new Ford GT program, as Dirk Mueller put the team’s No. 66 entry on pole at Road America last month.

Briscoe and Westbrook head into the race trailing GTLM points leaders Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner by seven points, 287-280, with two races remaining. Gavin struggled in qualifying, taking sixth on the GTLM grid in the No. 4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R.

“We need to keep doing our jobs,” Briscoe said. “Our cars have been good. It’s been consistent, but it’s a long race tomorrow. A lot is going to happen. If it’s like other races in this series, anything can happen. There are a lot of guys pushing hard for their result as well. It’s going to be a good race. This track lends itself to a lot of passing zones, but it’s going to be hot. And it’s good to be on the pole, we’re going to try and run strong all day and stay out front.”

Starting second in GTLM will be the No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE in the hands of Toni Vilander. The Finnish driver posted a time of 2:04.694 (98.1 mph) for the Houston-based team. He and co-driver Giancarlo Fisichella enter the race looking for their first victory of the season.

Patrick Pilet qualified third in GTLM with a best lap of 2:04.874 (98.0 mph) in the No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR. He and co-driver Nick Tandy are looking for their first victory since winning the BUBBA Burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach in April.

Fourth GTD TOTAL Pole Award Of Season For Riberas, Sixth For Porsche

No driver or manufacturer in the WeatherTech Championship GT Daytona (GTD) class has more pole positions this season than Alex Riberas and Porsche.

Riberas earned his fourth TOTAL Pole Award of the season and Porsche’s sixth GTD pole during a hot afternoon qualifying session at Circuit of The Americas. Riberas posted a best lap of 2 minutes, 8.568 seconds (95.2 mph) in the No. 23 Heart of Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R he shares with co-driver Mario Farnbacher.

It was the sixth pole of the season for Porsche in the GTD class and was the car’s fifth pole, as Farnbacher added one at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen in July. The No. 23 teammates look for their second victory of the season in Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans.

“We really appreciate what the Heart of Racing crew and Alex Job did today,” Riberas said. “It was a magnificent effort from the team to get the car set up for qualifying today. We were struggling with the pace yesterday. Today, we were happy. I set the fastest pace in free practice, but we knew it was going to be hot and I didn’t really know what to expect. The guys did a great job preparing for that and now we are in a great position for tomorrow with the race.”

Lawson Aschenbach qualified second in GTD with a best lap of 2:08.944 (94.9 mph) in the No. 9 Stevenson Automotive Group Audi R8 LMS GT3 he shares with co-driver Matt Bell. Aschenbach and Bell are in search of their first victory of the season, but head into the race carrying the momentum of a season-best second-place result in last month’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway.

Patrick Lindsey made it two Porsches in the top-three starting positions in GTD, clocking a best lap of 2:09.009 (94.8 mph) in the No. 73 Park Place Porsche / Justice Brothers Inc. Porsche 911 GT3 R for Dallas-based Park Place Motorsports. Lindsey will co-drive in Saturday’s race with Joerg Bergmeister.

Corvette Daytona Prototype Wins Third TOTAL Pole Award Of 2016, Taylor Leads Qualifying For Lone Star Le Mans By Slim Margin

Corvette Daytona Prototype Wins Third TOTAL Pole Award Of 2016,

Taylor Leads Qualifying For Lone Star Le Mans By Slim Margin

Alon Wins Third PC Pole Of Season For PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports

AUSTIN, Texas (Sept. 16, 2016) – By less than a blink of an eye, Ricky Taylor captured his first TOTAL Pole Award of the season, leading IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship qualifying for Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of The Americas (live, FS2, 12:30 p.m. ET).

Taylor ran a lap of 1:58.712 (103.1 mph) in the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette Daytona Prototype co-driven by his brother Jordan. He beat out Tristan Nunez by a scant 0.003 seconds in a session that saw the top five Prototypes separated by just 0.709 seconds.

“It was very hot and slippery, and the track changes in the heat,” said Taylor of his qualifying run in 90-plus degree heat. “It hasn’t been like this all weekend, so it was all about adapting to the track. This was as close as we’re going to get to conditions for tomorrow’s race, so hopefully this is a good read on how it’s going to stack up. It’s going to be a tough race.”

Nunez briefly led in the 15-minute session in an attempt to give Mazda its fourth pole of the season, but had to settle for second. His best lap was 1:58.715 (103.1 mph) in the No. 55 Castrol/ModSpace Mazda Prototype co-driven by Jonathan Bomarito.

Joel Miller was third in the No. 70 Mazda co-driven by Tom Long, running 1:59.120 (102.7 mph), followed by the two Action Express Racing teammates battling for the championship. Eric Curran – seeking his third straight victory in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Corvette DP co-driven by Dane Cameron – was fourth fastest at 1:59.199 (102.6 mph). Fifth was Christian Fittipaldi, a two-time 2016 pole winner running 1:59.421 (102.4 mph) in the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP co-driven by Joao Barbosa.

Entering the event, Fittipaldi and Barbosa lead Curran and Cameron by one point, 253-252, with only two races remaining.

Alon Wins Third PC Pole Of Season For PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports

Making a late-season charge into Prototype Challenge (PC) championship contention, Robert Alon won his third TOTAL Pole Award of 2016 in the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Professional Security Consultants/Westfield ORECA FLM09. Alon tamed the 20-turn, 3.4-mile circuit in 2:01.847 (100.4 mph), leading a session that saw the four fastest cars separated by only 0.458 seconds.

“I think the biggest thing is coming out and testing beforehand so we had a bit of a leg up,” said Alon, a two-time winner this season co-driving with Tom Kimber-Smith. “Keeping the car within the limits was key today. It was very easy to overdrive the car with the heat. It was also about keeping a clean lap.”

Alon and Kimber-Smith have a streak of three podium finishes. Their victory in the most recent event at Road America enabled them to close to within seven points of leaders Alex Popow and Renger van der Zande, 293-286.

Jose Gutierrez was second, with a lap of 2:02.271 (100.1 mph) in the No. 7 Starworks Motorsport Aviation Gin ORECA co-driven by Gustavo Yacaman, followed by teammate Popow, 2:02.274 (100.1 mph) in the No. 8 entry co-driven by van der Zande.

Matt McMurry was fourth with a lap of 2:02.305 (100.0 mph) in the No. 20 BAR1 Motorsports Gas Monkey Energy/Southwest Funding/Top1 Oil ORECA co-driven by Bruno Junqueira.

  • While Ricky Taylor scored his 13th career pole, it was his first since Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in July 2015.
  • The PC session was red-flagged and checkered with four minutes remaining when the No. 88 Starworks Motorsport Popcorn Sutton ORECA of Mark Kvamme went off course into a gravel trap at Turn 15.
  • Joel Miller posted the fastest practice time of the weekend in Friday morning’s final practice, running a lap of 1:58.033 (103.6 mph) in the No. 70 Mazda Prototype.

TRANSCRIPT: GoPro Grand Prix Day 1 Press Conference

GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma

Friday, Sept. 16, 2016

An Interview with Alexander Rossi and Helio Castroneves

THE MODERATOR: We’ll get started with today’s post practice press conference. Joined now by the driver of the No. 98 Honda for Andretti Autosport, Alexander Rossi.

I know probably not the finish you wanted for the practice session, but things were going pretty well throughout the afternoon, and of course you’re here in essentially your home race. How are things going for you so far this weekend and how does it feel to be home?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: I think so far things are going pretty well. You know, this morning we had a few issues. I think we resolved maybe 70% of them this afternoon, so that was positive. But still quite a bit to work on.

We got to the front, which we like to see. Overall, I know it’s our most positive Friday outside of an oval this year. Couldn’t have come at a better time. As you said, this is the home race. There’s been kind of a lot of activities leading up to this in my hometown, which has been great, but very busy. Happy to be back in a racecar at a racetrack so I don’t have to think about that.

Having said that, there’s quite a few friends and family that have never seen me race before that are all here this weekend, so that’s pretty special.

THE MODERATOR: It’s been an epic season for you obviously with the win at the hundredth running of the Indianapolis 500. You’re here wrapping up the final race of the 2016 season. Looking back at your season, did you ever imagine your first season in IndyCar would result the way it has?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: Well, the answer is no. In some ways I thought it would be better. In some ways I didn’t think I was going to win the Indy 500. I think it’s gone both directions and I just feel very fortunate that I have an opportunity to be a part of it this year.

It’s a championship that I really, really started to enjoy a lot for a multitude of reasons. I’m very happy that I’m here this year.

THE MODERATOR: What are your thoughts on the Sonoma Raceway racetrack?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: It’s awesome. It’s pretty tricky because it’s low grip. Some of that is the asphalt, some of that is the fact that the wind picks up in the afternoon. A lot of guys like to go through the dirt, myself included at times. It makes the track pretty dirty.

It’s a challenge. I think the race is the most difficult session just because you’re dealing with the tire life. It’s something that we’ve put a lot more emphasis on in the test last week and in practice today in terms of doing long runs to see where our car goes after not just a three-lap run.

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Alexander.

Q. What occurred at the end? Did you run out of gas?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: No, I’ve done that enough this year. I don’t know. Hopefully nothing (indiscernible) engine-wise.

Q. We talked about coming to the track and trying to come to a brand-new track. You said you adapt pretty fast. In your first two laps you were already in the top five in speed. You learned the track pretty fast.

ALEXANDER ROSSI: Helps to have the test last week. It wasn’t entirely new for me today. But having said that, we do a lot of prep kind of leading into a new track. It’s something that I feel very prepared for coming into new tracks this year.

Q. As an organization, y’all had a really standout Friday today. What did y’all learn from the test you had here last week?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: We learned that we were quick. I’d love to tell you that we found the solutions to our problems. I think we’ve made small steps forward, but not as big as it appears at the moment. I think this track is just suited to us. I think Ryan’s results the past two years here kind of proved that.

Q. You’re one-for-one in double points races this year. What’s it going to take to go two-for-two?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: Being quicker than we are. I mean, almost a half-second gap is too much. I think we have a good package. As you said, it’s the best Friday as a group we’ve had all year. If we can continue that progression, continue with the pace that we’ve kind of shown a little bit today, then hopefully it can be a positive thing come Sunday.

Q. How much have you liked the permanent road courses here where there’s not a lot of runoff?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: I enjoy it a lot. I think one of the, for lack of a better word, issues with new tracks in Europe and such is that there’s a lot of runoff. There’s no penalty whatsoever for kind of overdriving, overpushing the boundaries. I think this is a much more kind of classic way of doing things and the way racing should be.

Q. Nearly four months have passed since your big success in Indianapolis. Can you give some information on what is the reaction of the Formula One world after your win? Are you planning to attend at the end of the year a couple of races to renew the contacts?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: Yes, there’s six races left post Sonoma. I will be at those in a non-driving capacity. The reaction was positive, especially from the team that I’m associated with, Manor F1. But aside from that there’s been nothing else. I got a cake. That was cool.

Q. As we wrap up the season, is there any one thing that kind of stands out as the thing that happened that you didn’t expect coming into this series? What is the biggest surprise you found throughout the year?

ALEXANDER ROSSI: Aside from the entire month of May, the competitiveness and how good everyone in this championship is. I had quite a bit of naïveté from the fact I’d never been to an IndyCar race or had any kind of experience in the paddock. But it blows my mind every single time we’re out on track how good everyone is and how on top of your game you have to be in order to be in front.

THE MODERATOR: Alexander, thank you very much.

ALEXANDER ROSSI: Thank you.

THE MODERATOR: We’re also joined by Helio Castroneves, driving the No. 3 Team Penske Chevrolet.

Fastest in practice today. You’ve had success here at the track before, winning pole in 2008. Your thoughts on this morning and afternoon’s practice?

HELIO CASTRONEVES: I have to thank Team Penske. The Hitachi car has been dialed in. When we left here last Thursday practice, we felt really confident. We try a lot of bits. I guess that paid off.

So today was just a continuation of what we finished that day. It seemed to be working really well.

THE MODERATOR: I know you’re focused on your race, but I’m sure you’re also cognizant of the fact that two of your teammates are going for a championship, your team. What has your role as a teammate been in that process?

HELIO CASTRONEVES: Well, the good news is the team already clinched the championship. In my role, it’s just to cheer, Yes, good job.

I feel I did contribute a little bit with that. As far as who is going to win, if it’s Will or Simon, hmm, the best man wins. It’s up to them. For us it’s great because whatever happens now, we don’t need to be involved in the situation, you know, trying to help out each other. At this point it’s just between them.

Whoever be nicer to me, I might be able to help out. It’s just the way it works, you know what I mean?

THE MODERATOR: They’re not bribing you under the table?

HELIO CASTRONEVES: Right now Simon is being very good. I like the way his attitude has been. Will better watch out. No, just kidding (laughter).

All jokes aside, like I said, for the 50th anniversary of Team Penske, having Roger get the championship, having the championship on the 50th anniversary is just a perfect situation for Roger. We’re extremely happy, especially after last year, being so close and losing on the last one. Great recovery from the team.

As far as my position, I actually talked to my two other drivers to see if they can sort it out, whatever happens, but if it can help out so we can finish 1-2-3 in the championship. That would be a phenomenal year, even that I don’t have the chance to win the championship.

You know, looking good so far. But practice doesn’t pay anything. We just got to keep digging. You just heard Alex saying how on top of the game you got to be. That’s what we’re going to do. So far so good.

THE MODERATOR: Slightly out of championship contention. But looking back on 2016, you have several podium finishes. You’re en route to possibly finishing third in the championship. How would you rate or describe your season?

HELIO CASTRONEVES: Well, I have to be honest. You always want to be battling for the championship. Sometimes you wish things that doesn’t happen. But one thing, I keep pushing, I keep giving the best out of my guys and myself. We keep working together so that we can achieve our goals, which is not only win races but win the championship, and helping the team win the season.

As far as that, we were able to do it once with the championship. But we want to make sure that the party at Team Penske will be even more complete. The competition was really cool. You see that every race in and out we’re able to be really competitive.

Unfortunately you can only control things in ourselves, not control things outside ourselves. That’s probably what happened most of 2016. Cars on top of us, yellows coming at a time definitely not helping us out. Things like that definitely hurt us.

But we never lost the sight. We kept focus. We have two more days to complete the season.

THE MODERATOR: Questions for Helio.

Q. When you look back at your career, looking for another top-five finish in the championship, pretty much the same for 17 years, how have you been able to maintain that high level of consistency for such a long period of time?

HELIO CASTRONEVES: How do they say that saying? Bridesmaid but never a bride.

THE MODERATOR: Always a bridesmaid.

HELIO CASTRONEVES: I want to make sure next year we change that.

To answer your question, every year we don’t get it, it gives us motivation to do it next year and do better and try to get it. I always say and repeat, I going to say it again, it wasn’t meant to be.

But as far as giving everything we got, I’ve been doing that. While I still have the helmet, got the fire inside, I’m still going to do that.

Q. Can you give some information concerning the test last week. The weather conditions are very similar or identical.

HELIO CASTRONEVES: When we rolled out here last week, the wind was in the opposite direction. When we came here, to be honest, it caught a little bit of surprise all of us.

But I have to praise the setup of my car because Team Penske, my car was pretty much similar to what we finish here. So I’m very happy that all the modifications we did in the test, it shows that we have a consistency.

On a track that is very abrasive, it helps tremendously for the race. So with that, it was definitely different. We did roll out the way we thought was the best way as possible. The good news, the test from last weekend, we were able to gather, to get all the four data from the guys, put it together, try to develop an even better situation for this weekend. So far it’s been on the right track.

Q. The chance to have a dual celebration for Team Penske by one of the non-championship guys not winning the race, then you winning the race…

HELIO CASTRONEVES: That’s our goal. We all know that it’s been kind of like a long time that we haven’t captured a win. Again, not just because we’re on top of the board that we got to lose focus. It’s the opposite. We got to increase that. When you’re number one, you become a target.

I feel that it could be a good moment. But we still got to execute. Again, can’t wait for Sunday because sounds like whatever happens Team Penske is going to celebrate no matter what.

Q. You keep mentioning the wind. Detail what that does setup-wise. Seems like it’s extreme here.

HELIO CASTRONEVES: In Watkins Glen, for example, everything is kind of like pushing down. When you go into the corners, even there is a little banking, it makes the cars push down.

Here, because of the way the track is, a lot of elevation, when you go into turn three, when you go to the back of the S’s, it’s a rise. It’s completely different than Watkins Glen.

So when you add that element factor, you put the wind on it, whew, man, it’s becoming more tricky.

Now, before qualifying the wind went one direction, and in qualifying the wind went a different direction. When it happen like that, it throw another curve ball on you. And the temperature, by the way. In the morning, it’s cooler temperature. When you come to the afternoon, it’s a rise in temperature, which means you lose downforce.

I mentioned that to a friend of mine. There is so many variables in this place. And the tire degradation, you’ve got to get really right in one lap, I mean really right in one lap. If you’re lucky, you can get a second one. That’s why it’s so important to have a consistent car because whatever happens in those conditions, if you can really be confident on the first one, you have a very good chance to do well in qualifying.

Again, qualifying is one thing, the race is another.

Q. About Simon and Will, if you had to describe them on the track and then off.

HELIO CASTRONEVES: I don’t think we have enough time.

Q. What do you think about them as drivers if you’re nose to nose with them, then also off the track? Will has the dry sense of humor, Simon is larger-than-life.

HELIO CASTRONEVES: I only have good things to talk about those two guys, the entire team. Those two guys are really fun.

First of all, let’s talk about talent. Simon has a unique and different talent. Reminds me of a friend of mine, Gil de Ferran, which is interesting, very particular. But strong mind, know what he wants, and he delivers as well.

I’m happy for the season he had in the first year with us, and this year was like a 180 degrees, and shows that he’s a true champion.

Will, what can talk about Will? I always play the W. He’s a winner, but he’s weird, too. He’s a double W. He’s an incredible talent, as well. Super fast not only in qualifying but also in the race.

What a comeback this year. To not even start the first race, then come back and battle for the championship. It shows how incredible he is.

Even before Simon joined the team, we was already talking about Simon. It’s great. I feel that Team Penske has a great team, no question. Juan Pablo, as well. Unfortunately Juan Pablo got the same bug as Simon the first year. He didn’t have some of the lucks that any of us had.

I really enjoy working with those guys. It’s definitely a team that today finishing 1-2, hopefully 3, it shows everybody work together.

THE MODERATOR: Helio, thank you very much. Good luck this weekend.

Chevrolet Vs. Ford Battle For IMSA GTLM Supremacy

Heads To Texas For Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans

Viper Returns As GTD Winner, Looks To Close On Ferrari In Points Race

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2016) – Chevrolet and Ford take their battle for the coveted GT Le Mans (GTLM) manufacturer championship of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship to Austin’s Circuit of The Americas for Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans (live, FS2, 12:30 p.m. ET).

With only two races remaining, Chevrolet holds a 16-point advantage over Ford, 297-281. The GTLM team and driver championship fight is even closer. Corvette Racing opened the season with victories by Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner at Daytona and Sebring in the No. 4 Corvette C7.R, and added triumphs at Lime Rock and Road America to open a seven-point lead over the three-time winning No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT of Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook, 287-280.

“We got behind and could never catch up,” said Gavin following a season-worst ninth in the most recent round at VIRginia International Raceway. “That’s how difficult it is in this championship. We are still thankful to maintain the points lead and will do whatever we can to protect that lead over the final two races.”

Corvette Racing teammates Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen went on to win their first race of the season at VIR and are third in the standings with 259 points. Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller matched their best finish of the year by placing second at VIR in the No. 66 Ford GT. While winless in WeatherTech Championship competition, the pair won the GTE Pro class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

BMW, Ferrari and Porsche will also provide strong challenges at the state-of-the-art 20-turn, 3.4-mile road course in the two-hour, 40-minute race.

BMW Team RLL’s Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner won at Circuit of The Americas in 2016 in a BMW Z4, and return this year in a new car, the No. 25 IHG Rewards Club BMW M6 GTLM. Teammates John Edwards and Lucas Luhr share the team’s No. 100 entry.

Ferrari – also winless in 2016 – finished second at Circuit of The Americas in 2015. Houston-based Risi Competizione also has a new car this season, with Giancarlo Fisichella joined by Toni Vilander in the No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTE.

Third at COTA last year, Porsche North America has Nick Tandy and 2015 GTLM champion Patrick Pilet returning in the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR. They have one victory this season, at Long Beach. Teammates Earl Bamber and Frederic Makowiecki in the No. 912 Porsche are fourth in the driver standings with 250 points.

Dodge Viper Seeks Third Straight At COTA, Looks To Challenge Ferrari In GTD Standings

Looking for its third consecutive victory at Circuit of The Americas, the No. 33 ViperExchange.com/Cruising with the Monkey Dodge Viper GT3-R of Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen is looking to gain ground in the GT Daytona (GTD) championship hunt. Keating, of nearby Tomball, Texas, and Bleekemolen were 2016 winners at Detroit and Road America, and are second in the standings, trailing the Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3 of Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan by 20 points, 268-248.

Keating is undefeated at his home circuit with GTD class victories in each of the past two years, along with a GTC class win in the 2013 American Le Mans Series event. Adding to the Dodge threat is another Texas-based team, Lone Star Racing of Dallas, fielding the No. 80 ACS Manufacturing Viper for Dan Knox of Dallas and Mike Skeen.

Championship leaders Nielsen and Balzan have won at Sebring and Watkins Glen among five podium finishes this season, but finished seventh at VIR.

Turner Motorsport placed second at COTA last year in a BMW Z4. Michael Marsal and Markus Palttala return in a new car, the No. 97 Alvarez & Marsal/IHG Rewards Club BMW M6 GT3. They will be joined by Canadian Tire Motorsport Park winners Bret Curtis and Jens Klingmann in the No. 96 Spectra Resources/United Steel/Valspar Paint/IHG Rewards Club BMW M6.

Magnus Racing’s two-time winning No. 44 Audi Tire Center/Auric Solar Audi R8 LMS GT3 of John Potter and Andy Lally enters as part of Audi’s three-car lineup. Stevenson Motorsports fields two cars, the No. 6 Stevenson Automotive Group Audi R8 LMS GT3 of Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis, joined by the No. 9 Audi of Lawson Aschenbach and Matt Bell.

Lamborghini makes its WeatherTech Championship debut at COTA. Starworks Holds Lead, PR1/Mathiasen Carries Momentum In PC Race

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 12, 2016) – A pair of Corvette Daytona Prototypes from Action Express Racing is separated by only one point heading into this Saturday’s Lone Star Le Mans at Circuit of The Americas, the second-to-last round of the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (live, FS2, 12:30 p.m. ET).

Two-time and defending Prototype champions Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi, drivers of the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette DP, lead teammates Dane Cameron and Eric Curran in the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Corvette DP, 253-252. The team is riding a streak of three consecutive 1-2 finishes, with Barbosa and Fittipaldi winning at Watkins Glen while Cameron and Curran triumphed at both Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Road America.

“With only two races to go, and Action Express Racing one-two, it’s going to be a fun ending for the championship,” Barbosa said. “You only need to win by one point. We go to COTA next, and then a lot can happen in the 10-hour Petit Le Mans. We’re looking forward to the end of the championship.”

Brothers Ricky and Jordan Taylor, drivers of the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP, are a close third in the standings with 242 points. They are followed by Marc Goossens, who joins Ryan Dalziel in the No. 90 Visit Florida Racing Corvette DP, with 223 points.

Other challengers include the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Curb Records/AERO Honda Ligier JS P2 of Ozz Negri and John Pew, the No. 0 Panoz DeltaWing Racing Coupe of Katherine Legge and Sean Rayhall and a pair of Mazda Prototypes, the No. 55 Castrol/ModSpace Mazda for Jonathan Bomarito and Tristan Nunez, as well as the No. 70 of Tom Long and Joel Miller.

PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Takes Winning Momentum To Austin

Robert Alon and Tom Kimber-Smith won at Road America in the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Professional Security Consultants/Westfield ORECA FLM09, ending Starworks Motorsport’s seven-race podium streak and closing to within seven points of the lead in the Prototype Challenge (PC) standings.

With two victories and three runner-up finishes this season, Alon and Kimber-Smith have 286 points, trailing only Alex Popow and Renger van der Zande with 293 points. Alon and Kimber-Smith also won at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, placing on the podium in seven of the nine races.

“We’re definitely pushing for the championship,” said Alon, who will be racing at Circuit of The Americas for the first time. “We’re a little bit behind, but I think it’s definitely within our grasp. We just have to keep our heads down. COTA is pretty big with a lot of corners, but I’ve raced it on the simulator and I think it should be a fun place to race and pretty good for our team.”

Popow and van der Zande won three of the four races leading up to Road America, but a sixth-place finish cut the leading margin for the drivers of the No. 8 ORECA. Starworks also fields the No. 7 Aviation Gin ORECA of Gustavo Yacaman and Jose Gutierrez, along with the No. 88 Popcorn Sutton entry of Mark Kvamme and Richard Bradley.

Winning two races this season were Misha Goikhberg and Stephen Simpson, drivers of the No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports LaModerna/Hi-Tide Boat Lifts/Red Line Oil ORECA, who triumphed in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and at Long Beach. No. 54 CORE autosport ORECA co-drivers Jon Bennett and Colin Braun currently sit fourth in the standings.

BAR1 Motorsports has a two-car entry for Austin. Bruno Junqueira joins Matt McMurry in the No. 20 Gas Monkey Energy/Southwest Funding/Top 1 Oil ORECA, while John Falb joins Don Yount in the No. 26 ORECA. Rounding out the PC entry is the Performance Tech Motorsports No. 38 Ric-Man Construction / Children’s Miracle Network / NeuroSpine Institute ORECA of James French.

Practice for the Lone Star Le Mans begins at 10:25 a.m. CT on Thursday, with qualifying on Friday at 3:45 p.m. CT. The weekend also includes the penultimate round for the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, racing Friday at 12:40 p.m. CT.

Austin Hatcher Foundation To Benefit From Four Fundraising Auctions
During IMSA Race Weekend At Circuit Of The Americas

· AHF Partnering With Action Express Racing, Three Acclaimed Artists For Sept. 17 Auctions
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. (Sept. 12, 2016) – The Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer (AHF) will have a strong presence at one of the crown jewels of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) season on Sept. 17, benefiting from four fundraising auctions during the Lone Star Le Mans weekend at the fabulous Circuit of the America’s (COTA) road course in Austin, Texas.
The Austin Hatcher Foundation is a proud partner of Daytona Beach, Florida-based IMSA, North America’s premier sports car racing sanctioning body. The COTA connection will continue a year-long series of fundraising partnerships at IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship events. The AHF, founded in 2006, is an organization committed to erasing the effects of pediatric cancer. It has a long-running link to high-end professional sports car racing. Prior to its status with IMSA, it was the official charity of the American Le Mans Series. These links have resulted in a presence at North America’s premier road racing facilities, aided by various partnerships with race teams – such as the upcoming foundation showcase at COTA
The series of fundraisers will begin with a live auction from 9:45-10:15 a.m. (CT) at the Action Express Racing team transporter in the race track’s paddock area. Auctions hosted by race teams typically feature photography, used race parts and other sports car memorabilia up for bid. Denver-based Action Express has won both the driver and team championships the last two seasons in the WeatherTech Championship’s headlining Prototype class, with drivers Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa. That duo currently leads this season’s championship standings going into the Lone Star le Mans.
“We have the champs in our corner at COTA,” said AHF President Amy Jo Osborn, “and we could not be more thrilled – or more grateful for Action Express’s support.”
In addition to the Action Express auction, three noted artists will provide paintings on Sept. 17 that will be put up for auction to benefit the AHF. That lineup:
· Throughout the day on Sept. 17, works in digital expressionism by Detroit native Karen Barrow will be available at the Lamborghini Corral;
· At 1 p.m., Roger Warrick – known as “Sebring’s artist” for his poster and program cover artwork for that famous endurance race — will be producing a new work “live” at the Corvette Corral;
· And at 2 p.m., another “live painting” will be produced by Bill Patterson, a world-class “motionsports” artist who is the “official artist” at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca at the Porsche and again at 6 p.m. at the Audi Corral.

About the Austin Hatcher Foundation:

Circuit Of The Americas Hosts The Lone Star Le Mans

With WeatherTech Championship Battles On The Line

One Point Separates Top Two Prototypes, GTLM Features Chevrolet Vs. Ford Showdown

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2016) – With only two races remaining on the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship schedule, teams in all four classes will have an eye on their respective championships in the Lone Star Le Mans at Austin’s Circuit of The Americas on Saturday, Sept. 17 (live, FS2, 12:30 p.m. ET).

IMSA today released the entry list for Round 11 of the WeatherTech Championship. The Prototype and Prototype Challenge (PC) classes – which sat out the recent event at VIRginia International Raceway – return to action, joining the GT Le Mans (GTLM) and GT Daytona (GTD) classes in the two-hour, 40-minute race.

Action Express Racing is in the driver’s seat for the Prototype title, scoring 1-2 finishes in its last three races. Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi seek their third consecutive title in the No. 5 Mustang Sampling Corvette Daytona Prototype, although their teammates Dane Cameron and Eric Curran won at both Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and Road America to close the gap to one point in the standings, 253-252.

“It’s hard to believe there’s only two rounds to go,” said Cameron, who joined Curran on the podium in six of the eight races this season. “We’ve won the last two races and Action Express have been 1-2 in the last three, so certainly we have a lot of confidence and a lot of momentum within our car and our organization. We’re looking to taking that forward into COTA and to Petit Le Mans after that. Everything’s where we want it to be and firing on all cylinders, and we’re ready to make a run at the championship with the No. 31 car.”

Also within striking distance of the Prototype lead with 242 points is the No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP of brothers Ricky and Jordan Taylor.

The Prototype class also includes Visit Florida Racing’s No. 90 Corvette DP of Marc Goossens and Ryan Dalziel, the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Curb Records/AERO Honda Ligier JS P2 of Ozz Negri and John Pew, the two Mazda Prototypes driven by Tristan Nunez, Jonathan Bomarito, Tom Long and Joel Miller and the No. 0 Panoz DeltaWing Racing Coupe of Katherine Legge and Sean Rayhall.

The GTLM championship battle has turned into a showdown of Chevrolet vs. Ford. Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner – four-time winners this season in the No. 4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R – enter Texas with a seven-point lead (287-280) over Richard Westbrook and Ryan Briscoe, who have won three races in the No. 67 Ford Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GT. Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia won the most recent round at VIRginia International Raceway in the No. 3 Corvette Racing Corvette C7.R, while 24 Hours of Le Mans GTE Pro class winners Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller finished second at VIR in the No. 66 Ford GT.

BMW Team RLL is the defending GTLM winner at Circuit of The Americas, with Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner returning in the No. 25 IHG Rewards Club BMW M6 GTLM. The team also fields the No. 100 BMW for John Edwards and Lucas Luhr. Porsche North America fields the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR for Patrick Pilet and Nick Tandy, plus the No. 912 for Earl Bamber and Frederic Makowiecki. Ferrari is represented by the Houston-based No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari 488 GTE of Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander.

A pair of Texas-based Dodge Vipers headline the 17-car GTD lineup. Ben Keating of Tomball, Texas and Jeroen Bleekemolen are seeking their third consecutive Circuit of The Americas victory in the Houston-based No. 33 ViperExchange.com/Cruising with the Monkey Dodge Viper GT3-R. Dallas-based Lone Star Racing fields the No. 80 ACS Manufacturing Viper for Dan Knox, also of Dallas, and Mike Skeen.

Scuderia Corsa drivers Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan enter the event with a 20-point lead over Keating and Bleekemolen, 268-248. The drivers of the No. 63 Ferrari 488 GT3 won two races and have scored five podium finishes this season.

Audi’s three car lineup includes Magnus Racing’s two-time winning No. 44 Audi Tire Center/Auric Solar Audi R8 LMS GT3 of John Potter and Andy Lally, and Stevenson Motorsports’ two-car entry, the No. 6 Stevenson Automotive Group Audi of Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis, joined by the No. 9 Audi of Lawson Aschenbach and Matt Bell.

Lamborghini makes its WeatherTech Championship debut at COTA with Paul Miller Racing, with the VIR-winning No. 48 Castrol Edge/Universal Auto Sales Lamborghini Huracán GT3 of Madison Snow and Bryan Sellers; Change Racing, led by the No. 16 Pertamina/Monster Energy of Spencer Pumpelly and Corey Lewis; and Dream Racing with the No. 27 of Luca Persiani and Cedric Sbirrazzuoli.

Porsche’s entry includes the Dallas-based No. 73 Park Place Motorsports/Justice Brothers Porsche 911 GT3 R of Patrick Lindsey and Joerg Bergmeister, joining the Alex Job Racing No. 23 Team Seattle/Heart of Racing Porsche of Mario Farnbacher and Alex Riberas.

Turner Motorsport returns with a pair of BMW M6 GT3s for drivers Bret Curtis, Jens Klingmann, Michael Marsal and Markus Palttala, while Aston Martin returns to GTD competition with the No. 007 TRG-AMR Godstone Ranch Aston Martin Vantage GT3.

Alex Popow and Renger van der Zande, drivers of the No. 8 Starworks Motorsport ORECA FLM09, finished sixth in the most recent PC round at Road America, seeing their lead trimmed to seven points, 293-286, over the No. 52 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports car with drivers Robert Alon and Tom Kimber-Smith, with two wins. In addition to the No. 8 machine, Starworks will field two more cars at the event, with the No. 7 of Gustavo Yacaman and Jose Gutierrez joining the No. 88 Popcorn Sutton entry of Mark Kvamme and Richard Bradley.

CORE autosport is the defending PC winner at Austin, with Jon Bennett and Colin Braun returning in the No. 54 Flex-Box/Composite Resources/Crowdstrike ORECA. BAR1 Motorsports will race two cars. Bruno Junqueira joins Matt McMurry in the No. 20 Gas Monkey Energy/Southwest Funding/Top 1 Oil ORECA, while John Falb joins Don Yount in the No. 26 entry. Other PC entries include James French in the No. 38 Performance Tech Motorsports ORECA, and Misha Goikhberg and Stephen Simpson in the No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports ORECA.

Mikey Martin Joins Richie Morris Racing

Mikey Martin Joins Richie Morris Racing

Springfield, IL- (1 September 2016) – Richie Morris Racing will feature a new rider line-up for this weekend’s Springfield Mile as Mikey Martin will join Shayna Texter as AMA Pro Flat Track makes an encore visit to the one-mile oval circuit.

Sunday’s action will kick off with a 12:00 PM rider autograph session, with the Harley-Davidson GNC1 presented by Vance & Hines main event set to go green at 3:50 PM.

Martin won the 2011 GNC2 championship and has multiple main event appearances to his credit. He will help the team continue to develop the in-house built chassis by providing added data and feedback for the squad. Martin steps in as Corey Texter, who made four AMA Pro starts with RMR this season, returns to focus on his eponymous team full-time.

“Corey did an awesome job for us on the bike,” said team principle Richie Morris. “Having a second rider doubles how much feedback we can get about the bike and I am glad to have Mikey (Martin) help us continue that this weekend. We are focused on what data we can generate to apply to our 2017 program, and we are looking forward to sharing some news about that after this weekend!”

The visit to the Springfield Mile, a long-held Labor Day tradition for the AMA Pro Flat Track ranks, is one that Shayna Texter has been looking forward to. The high-speed track has been the site of some strong runs for the rider, who carries support from McElroy Packaging, Tucker Rocky and Roland Sands Design.

“Shayna had her best-ever GNC1 finish here at Springfield (8th in the final), so we are hoping we can have that kind of day again on Sunday,” said Morris. “We are looking forward to having Mikey join us and having a really productive run this weekend.”

Martin has scored a GNC1 Dash for Cash win and sat on the pole in the 2015 AMA Pro Flat Track visit to his home Sacramento track, and is eager for his opportunity to return to AMA Pro action.

“I want to thank Richie Morris for the opportunity to ride for him and RMR,” said Martin. “I went from having nothing to ride to riding for a top team overnight, so I couldn’t be happier! I am also excited to have Willie McCoy (multi-time Springfield Mile race winner) with me as a mentor and mechanic—hopefully his knowledge will help us get to the front.”

The race is slated to be streamed live at fanschoice.tv.

Ferrari’s Nielsen and Balzan Hold GTD Points Lead, Prepare To

Defend Scuderia Corsa Victory At VIR In Michelin GT Challenge

Audi’s Lally, Potter 15 Points Behind With Three Races Remaining

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 23, 2016) – Scuderia Corsa will defend its GT Daytona (GTD) class victory in Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway with a new Ferrari and a new driver lineup.

Christina Nielsen and Alessandro Balzan have won two races in 2016 GTD competition in the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 GT3, and hold a 15-point lead with only three races remaining entering Round 10 of the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (live, FS1, 1:30 p.m. ET).

The GTD competitors will join the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class in the two-hour, 40-minute race, the lone WeatherTech Championship event exclusively showcasing the GT classes.
“I really like VIR,” said Denmark’s Nielsen, who joined Balzan in winning GTD races at Sebring and Watkins Glen in 2016. “I think it’s a classic, old-school American circuit. There are quick corners and a quick flow, so you have to be really precise.”

While Townsend Bell and Bill Sweedler won the 2015 Michelin GT Challenge in a Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia, Nielsen finished second in an Aston Martin Vantage. Teaming with Scuderia Corsa in 2016, she and Balzan have scored five podium finishes and placed in the top 10 in seven of eight races.

“We had a good result at VIR last year – it was a lot about strategy,” Nielsen said. “It will be interesting to see how our strategy will play out this year.”

Second in the standings, trailing 243-228, is the Magnus Racing tandem of Andy Lally and John Potter, who were class winners in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and at Lime Rock Park in the No. 44 Audi Tire Center/Auric Solar Audi R8 LMS GT3. Audi also has a pair of Stevenson Motorsports entries, with Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis scoring a pair of runner-up finishes in the No. 6 Stevenson Automotive Group Audi R8 LMS GT3, joined by Lawson Aschenbach and Matt Bell in the No. 9 Audi.

Alex Job Racing finished on the VIR podium last year. Mario Farnbacher returns in a new car – the No. 23 Team Seattle/Heart of Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R. He and co-driver Alex Riberas have combined to capture a series-leading four TOTAL Pole Awards and were winners at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen are two-time GTD winners in 2016, coming home first at Detroit and the most recent race at Road America in the No. 33 Riley Motorsports ViperExchange.com/Cruising with the Monkey Dodge Viper GT3-R. Also competing in a Dodge Viper, Lone Star Racing returns with Dan Knox and Mike Skeen co-driving the No. 80 ACS Manufacturing entry.

Lamborghini will be making its WeatherTech Championship debut at VIR this weekend. Paul Miller Racing’s Bryan Sellers and Change Racing’s Spencer Pumpelly are TOTAL Pole Award winners this season. Sellers and Madison Snow gave the manufacturer its first podium finish by taking third at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the No. 48 Castrol Edge/Universal Industrial Sales Lamborghini Huracán GT3. Pumpelly co-drives with Corey Lewis in the No. 16 Pertamina/Monster Energy Lamborghini, while Dream Racing fields the No. 27 Lamborghini for Lawrence DeGeorge and Cedric Sbirrazzuoli.

BMW and Turner Motorsport came home victorious in 2016 from Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, with Jens Klingmann and Bret Curtis winning in the new No. 96 Spectra Resources/United Steel/Valspar Paint/IHG Rewards Club BMW M6 GT3. Michael Marsal and Markus Palttala – fourth at VIR last year – share the No. 97 Alvarez & Marsal/IHG Rewards Club BMW M6 GT3.

Practice for the Michelin GT Challenge begins at 11:30 a.m. ET on Friday, August 26, with qualifying at 11:55 a.m. on Saturday. The weekend also includes the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, racing on Saturday at 1:55 p.m. ET, plus the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.

Corvette Racing Takes Two-Race Winning Streak, Points Lead To Michelin GT Challenge At VIRginia International Raceway

Corvette Racing Takes Two-Race Winning Streak, Points Lead

To Michelin GT Challenge At VIRginia International Raceway

Virginia Driver Milner Joins Gavin In Championship-Leading Winning No. 4 Corvette

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 22, 2016) – Corvette Racing takes a two-race winning streak and the points lead in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class into Sunday’s Michelin GT Challenge at VIRginia International Raceway, Round 10 of the 2016 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (live, FS1, 1:30 p.m. ET).

Virginia’s Tommy Milner looks to continue momentum from Road America, where he charged from fifth to first in the closing five minutes of the race to give the No. 4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R co-driven by Oliver Gavin its fourth victory of the season.

“I have lot of great racing memories at VIR, and it would be great to add another with our fifth win of the season in the No. 4 Chevrolet Corvette,” said Milner, a native of Leesburg who now resides in Ashburn. “This is a track that is really fun to drive. It’s incredibly fast, it’s flowing and has a couple of really good elevation changes. A GT-only race is a nice dynamic for us, where we have a chance for an overall win. The most important thing we can do, though, is score as many points as possible.”

After opening the season with GTLM victories in the Rolex 24 At Daytona and Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh From Florida, Milner and Gavin saw their lead trimmed during a midseason three-race winning streak by Ford Chip Ganassi Racing drivers Ryan Briscoe and Richard Westbrook. The Corvette returned to the top of the victory podium at Lime Rock Park, and now leads Ford by 13 points, 264-251. Third in the points is the No. 3 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R of Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen, which has three podium finishes this season.

Ford Chip Ganassi Racing will be looking to rebound from the late-race disappointment at Road America in the VIR debut of the exciting Ford GT. In addition to winning three races, Westbrook and Briscoe have scored five consecutive podium finishes in the No. 67 Ford GT. Teammates Joey Hand and Dirk Mueller – seventh in the points in the No. 66 Ford GT – were GTE Pro class winners at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June.

Porsche North America is looking to repeat its 1-2 finish in last year’s Michelin GT Challenge. Patrick Pilet and Nick Tandy return in the winning No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR, while Earl Bamber will be joined by Frederic Makowiecki in the No. 912 entry.

“Last year, Porsche celebrated a commanding double victory in Virginia, and there is no greater incentive than that,” said Pilet, who went on to capture the 2015 GTLM championship. “VIR is one of those traditional racetracks deep in the heart of America that I particularly look forward to. It’s fast and demanding, and if you make a mistake as a driver, you pay the price immediately.”

Ferrari also has a solid track record at VIR. Risi Competizione followed up an ALMS victory in 2013 by scoring a last-turn, last-lap victory in the inaugural WeatherTech Championship race in 2014. Last year, the team placed third behind the Porsches with a Ferrari 458 Italia. This year, Giancarlo Fisichella and Toni Vilander will co-drive the No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTE, which will race at VIR for the first time.

BMW Team RLL has new cars for the Michelin GT Challenge as well, fielding a pair of BMW M6 GTLMs. Bill Auberlen and Dirk Werner are fifth in the championship in the No. 25 IHG Rewards Club M6. John Edwards and Lucas Luhr share the No. 100 BMW, and are coming off their first podium finish of the season at Road America.
