Elkhart Lake, Wis (26 June 2011)— Riley Technologies was once again in Victory Lane this weekend, this time adding a new name to the list of its winning designs as the No. 9 Stevenson Auto Group Riley-built Camaro won the Road America 200. Stevenson Motorsports drivers Matt Bell and John Edwards led 27 laps to bring the Camaro its first-ever race victory in GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge competition.
Appropriately enough, it was the same team that first committed to the Riley-built Camaro program, Stevenson Motorsports, that brought the breakthrough win for the machine.
The Camaro, which is also raced in Europe, first entered GRAND-AM competition in the season-ending 2009 race at Virginia International Raceway. Stevenson drivers Bell and Jeff Bucknum scored the machine’s first podium finish at VIR in April, 2010. Bell went on to net the first ever pole position for the Camaro as he set a new track record in qualifying at Mid-Ohio before leading the first-ever laps for the machine.
The Road America race didn’t just see Stevenson Motorsports enjoying success with the Camaro, as Mitchum Motorsports driver Robert Stout netted his first-ever front row starting position in qualifying, with the sister No. 62 Camaro of Joey Atterbury starting just behind in fourth.
Stout pounced to take the lead at the green flag before ceding the lead to Bell, who started the race from 12th on the grid. Bell turned the car over to co-driver Edwards during a well-timed stop, setting the stage for Edwards to fight to the front and hold on for the win. Between Atterbury, Stout, Bell, and Edwards, the Camaro led all but 8 of the race’s 44 laps.
“It is tremendously gratifying to see this Camaro in victory lane,” said Riley Technologies Vice-President Bill Riley. “Our teams have been pushing very hard, and we were confident that the results would show that. It is important for us to provide everything we can to support our teams, and the partnership with Chevrolet has been very productive. Hopefully we can have a few more races like this and show some strength in the championship as the season moves forward. Congratulations to the entire Stevenson Motorsports group. This (Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge) is a very competitive championship and you have to get everything right to win here so we are very proud of the results this weekend.”
The Camaro contingent will look to keep the positive momentum going in the next round as the series returns to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on July 6.
