Rum Bum Wrap: Thursday at Barber
TV Info: SPEED, April 16, 2:00 PM ET
7 April 2011 (Birmingham, Ala.) – Rum Bum Racing drivers Matt Plumb and Nick Longhi are back in action this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park for round three of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship season. Rum Bum Racing is coming off a fifth place finish in the team’s home race at Homestead-Miami Speedway last month, and will look to recapture the championship points lead this weekend.
The Barber event opened with a promoter test day on Wednesday, with GRAND-AM staging two official practice sessions on Thursday afternoon. The No. 13 Rum Bum Racing has run flawlessly through the opening two days, setting the 7th-fastest time in the opening session before improving to net the 2nd-quickest time overall, closing out Thursday’s running as the fastest BMW.
“It’s gone pretty much to plan so far,” said Longhi, who will qualify the car on Friday. “We are really concentrating on how this car will be on the long run. This has always been a track that favored the Mustangs, so we’re working hard to have a car that is going to race well. Barber sometimes can be a tough race, with a lot of yellows making it a matter of survival. But hopefully we’ll just stay out of any trouble and Matt can be there at the end.”
“We had a pretty comprehensive plan for the weekend and so far we’ve come out and executed it,” said Plumb. “We tested here before the event and so we showed up ready to go. But with the strength that the Mustangs have here, we have really been pushing the envelope and trying a lot of new things with this car. I think we’ve made more changes to the car this weekend than we did all year long last year! So the Rum Bum crew guys have been putting in a lot of work but I think it’s going to pay off. We’re encouraged about the progress we’ve made and hopefully we can keep moving in the right direction. I think we’ll have a good car for qualifying, and hopefully an even better one for the race on Saturday.”
Friday’s qualifying will set the grid, with the race set for a Saturday (11:30 AM local). SPEED will broadcast the race on April 16th at 2:00 PM ET.
