AJ Allmendinger Says “Thank You” Ahead of Veterans Day

AJ Allmendinger Says "Thank You" Ahead of Veterans Day

November 8, 2011 (Charlotte, NC)– With just two races to go in the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, AJ Allmendinger has a lot on his mind as he hopes to once again close the year out on a high note with strong finishes in his No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Ford Fusion.

But between his testing duties at Las Vegas Motor Speedway this week and his return to Phoenix International Raceway this weekend for the 500-mile race, Allmendinger took some time out to say thank you as the nation prepared to celebrate Veterans Day this Friday.

Allmendinger, who has carried the colors for both the Air Force and the Paralyzed Veterans of America on his Richard Petty No. 43 this year, counts himself lucky to get to know some of the amazing individuals who have served the United States in the past, and countless others that still do today.

“I don’t really have a history of military in my family, so getting to meet so many good people in the armed forces has been really cool for me,” said Allmendinger. “What they all do every day, as a team, for our country is so important. The more I learn about what they do, and the more people I met, the more impressed I am. It’s humbling to have so many people with such talent out there representing and protecting me. It’s important for us to think of all the sacrifices that our veterans and their families have made through the years. Not just on Veterans Day, but every day.”

AJ Allmendinger started both rounds of competition at Phoenix from the front row in 2010, and will look to make the most of the recent test on the repaved surface as NASCAR heads west for the penultimate round of the 2011 season. The Best Buy Racing driver will sport the WIX Filters paint scheme this weekend as he looks to build on his run to 10th place at Texas last weekend.

About Walldinger Racing, Inc.: Walldinger Racing was formed in 2006 to support AJ Allmendinger’s motorsports career by developing commercial opportunities and partnership programs.

Highway To Help: Philanthropic Spinoff Of Brian Johnson Driving Role At Daytona To Benefit Battle Against Pediatric Cancer

AC/DC Lead Singer Announces Unique Partnership With Austin Hatcher Foundation

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 5, 2011) – Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Fifty Plus Racing, in tandem with Predator Performance and Alegra Motorsports, announced tonight a unique partnership with the Austin Hatcher Foundation, allowing fans the opportunity to donate money to help children with pediatric cancer throughout the 50th anniversary running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Jan. 28-29 at Daytona International Speedway.

The aptly titled “Highway to Help” program will be driven by AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson, who will make his Rolex Series debut in January alongside Byron DeFoor, former Rolex 24 overall winners Elliott Forbes-Robinson and Jim Pace, and former Rolex 24 class winner Carlos DeQuesada.

Throughout the race, fans can text “ACDC” to 501501 to donate $10 to the Austin Hatcher Foundation. In addition there will be a 24-hour “radioathon” throughout the event with two PSAs every hour and a live DJ promoting the event. The goal is to raise $1 million for families affected by pediatric cancer.

“This is real, this is going to happen, and we’re all happy to have the opportunity to do this,” said Johnson at the Saturday night announcement. “AC/DC fans all over the world are now rooting for the Austin Hatcher Foundation.

Texts to the “Highway to Help” campaign will be $10, but fans can also contribute by going towww.hatcherfoundation.org/highwaytohelp.

Johnson has been the front man and lead singer for powerhouse rock band AC/DC since 1980. The band’s first album with him as lead singer, “Back in Black,” became the best-selling album by any band, selling 22 million albums in the United States and 49 million worldwide.

DeFoor, a Chattanooga, Tenn., businessman, owns and races numerous high-horsepower Can-Am race cars and BMW GT cars.

The Fifth Plus team will compete with the No. 50 Dinan-prepared BMW/Riley and will take part in a Nov. 16-17 test session at Daytona International Speedway. Johnson does as many Historic Sportscar Racing events as his touring schedule allows, racing a Royale RP4 and a Can-Am Lola among other vintage cars.

“Everywhere you look in GRAND-AM right now there’s excitement and anticipation for the 2012 season and beyond,” said GRAND-AM Managing Director of Communications Herb Branham. “This latest entry into the Daytona Prototype ranks is an important component to that excitement. The involvement of an international entertainment star like Brian Johnson speaks volumes about GRAND-AM’s growth and stature.”

In addition to its Rolex 24 entry, Fifty Plus Racing expects to compete in GRAND-AM’s possible three-race endurance competition also featuring the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen and the new three-hour event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

“We’re committed to running in all three events,” said Johnson. “If we have to cancel something or move something, we will.”

Forbes-Robinson – better known as “EFR” – scored overall victories in the Rolex 24 with Dyson Racing in 1997 and 1999, and won the SR class for the team in 2000. His 22 starts in the Rolex 24 include finishing fifth in the 1977 classic, co-driving a Ferrari 365 Daytona with Paul Newman. He has four Rolex Series victories, including three Daytona Prototype triumphs co-driving with Butch Leitzinger in 2004 and 2005.

Pace shared the overall victory with Wayne Taylor and Scott Sharp in 1996. The 13-time Rolex 24 competitor also won the GTU class in his first outing, running in Peter Uria’s Mazda RX-7 in 1990.

DeQuesada won GT honors in the 2007 Rolex 24, sharing the Alegra Motorsports/Fiorano Racing Porsche GT3 with Scooter Gabel, Jean-Francois Dumoulin and Marc Basseng.

Daniel, Dan, Danny Boy

I remember talking about his name, which at the time, was Daniel Wheldon. Here we were, a group of marketing types, shaking our heads that “Daniel” would just not work as an Indianapolis 500 champion.

I remember trying to rectify that name with other Indy 500 winners, and we joked about calling him “Danny,” which seemed so off for a guy going by Daniel with the accent to back it up. But then again, it had worked for Sullivan…

At the time, he was slugging his way up the open wheel ladder, and I met him in the race shop the week before the trip to Mexico. So it seemed completely improbable , and not just because he was racing on a path that would seemingly never get him to the 500, that this guy who making jokes and hanging about the shop, was going to be some kind of star, much less Indianapolis 500 winner or Series champion.

I remember meeting him up with a bunch of team folks (PacWest) to go karting with him. There was a new place downtown that had this cool new karts, asphalt surface and individual lap timers right on the steering wheel.

When we got there, Dan (Daniel) was already there, waiting for us at the entry way. He immediately started excitedly asking us, “…whats the story with this place? are the karts good? whats a good time here? Which track are we racing on?” clearly setting a foundation for the idea that he’d never been there.

His cover was blown all of twenty seconds later when we walked into where the folks were taking tickets/selling seats…and the guy running the place greeted the entire group by lighting up and recognizing our “rookie,” “hey, Dan!”

He was having us on, from the very get go… this was far from his first visit to the track.

I remember the next year when I was at Walker Racing, and here was Daniel again, shaking the bushes, and keeping in touch with as many folks as he could, trying to make things happen. And it seemed he spent just as much time hanging with the guys in marketing as he did with the folks who had their names on the doors. No dummy, he always knew it took a whole race team to be behind you.

At that point, he had made his move to focus on IRL. “It’s where I have an opportunity” he’d say. And he couldn’t have been more right, as he proved down the road.

I remember when he pulled his helmet off in victory lane in his first Indy 500, and I happened to be standing right there and make eye contact with him. Of course, it’s Dan, so he’s going to give you a nod of recognition, even if he happened to have just won the biggest race in the world, right then.

He went well past Daniel, to just Dan. A household freaking name. An Indy 500 champ, two times over.

But a house hold name that would never stop having you on, no matter if you raced against him or wrote about him, it was easy to see why he’d also respond to “Danny Boy,” especially if you were having a turn at ribbing him, as many of his fellow drivers clearly enjoyed doing. And he, right back.

It’s just incredible that so quickly, he’s now gone. And once again a household name, this time for the wrong reason.

What is not at all incredible is that what people are talking about today is not what he did on the track–not that it wasn’t impressive–but who he was off of it.

RIP Daniel, Dan, Danny Boy.

Prayers for Suzie.

“Chevrolet has a long, storied history in Indy car racing,” said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. “This year we celebrated the shared centennial of Chevrolet and the Indianapolis 500. We’re excited to see that history continue with the help of Penske Corporation and INDYCAR bringing back open-wheel racing to Detroit in 2012. “Chevrolet has been instrumental in bringing motorsports back to Detroit,” said Penske Corp. Chairman Roger Penske. “The Grand Prix will draw international attention and visitors to Belle Isle – which is one of the most-scenic race venues in the United States. We believe the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix will be one of the most-popular races in the IZOD IndyCar Series and will play a major role in continuing the renaissance of Detroit.”

Indy car racing has developed a global audience. The 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series, which concludes Oct. 16, includes 17 events in the United States, Canada, Brazil, and Japan, reaching an estimated television audience of 191 million people in 200 countries.

The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix was last held in 2007 and 2008. Based on estimates from the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau, those two events combined attracted more than 200,000 visitors, and brought more than $100 million to the Detroit Metro economy.

“We are thrilled to be able to bring the Detroit Grand Prix back to Belle Isle,” said Detroit Mayor Dave Bing. “Thanks to the support of INDYCAR, Penske Corporation and Chevrolet we will once again host one of the world’s most prestigious motorsports events.”

RICHARD PETTY MOTORSPORTS DRIVERS POST FASTEST SPEEDS BY FORDS IN PHOENIX

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (October 4, 2011) – The Richard Petty Motorsports machines posted Ford’s quickest speeds of the day during today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series test session at Phoenix International Raceway. Marcos Ambrose, driver of the No. 9 Stanley Ford Fusion, posted the eighth quickest speed of the day and teammate AJ Allmendinger, pilot of the No. 43 Best Buy Ford, sat 11th on the charts at the conclusion of the first day of the two-day test.

“The track started off really, really slichttps://sundaygroupblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=872&action=editk and as more cars ran it rubbered in,” commented Allmendinger. “It felt like maybe there was a groove and a quarter or a groove and a half that built up. I think the layout of the racetrack seems fun. There’s a lot more room and a lot more grip off of Turn 2. My biggest question is how much it will widen out when there are three Series’ here because if it doesn’t it will make passing kind of tough. I think they did a good job on the racetrack and for us today it was just about trying all kinds of different stuff. We ran a lot of laps and I felt like we learned some things, so overall it was a good day for the Best Buy Racing team.”

“There’s definitely a big difference in the track,” said Ambrose. “The shape is different and I really like Turns 1 and 2 and the back kink. Turns 3 and 4 feel about the same as they used to. The track still has to groove in and I think all of us hope that the line fattens up a little bit so we put on a good race. Right now it’s a bit of a single groove track, but it is getting better and I think it’s really going to help the quality of racing here.”

“Coming in here we had some ideas and some thoughts based on the tire test and some information and data that we had and were able to look at, but until we really got on the racetrack and made laps, we weren’t really sure what to look for,” said Todd Parrott, crew chief of the No. 9 Ford. “Our cars unloaded off the truck pretty close to what we needed and had good speed. We tweaked on the front end settings today and the shocks and bump stops and just kept finding speed and Marcos was comfortable with the car. I think the No. 43 team did a lot of the same things we did today. We worked through a bunch of stuff and different combinations and we were pretty happy at the end of the day. Both of the RPM cars had good speed and drove well. Read more of this post
