Daytona Beach, Fla. (23 January 2014) – Burton Racing got a solid start to the team championship defense on Thursday and made fast work of a busy 15-minute qualifying session this afternoon at the Daytona International Speedway.

As the 35-car grid was set for Friday’s BMW Performance 200, Greg Strelzoff piloted the No. 22 Gold Eagle BMW 128i to 13th position with Mike LaMarra locking 14th on the grid with the BMW Chemicals/Excelda No. 22 128i.

The team plan was to make the most of an aerodynamic “tow” by running in tandem, but just like what can happen when driving on the street, traffic thwarted those plans. But even without the help, both cars were within two seconds of the pole-setting time on the 3.56-mile circuit.

“We kind of ran into some traffic that didn’t really allow us to work together with the No. 22 car and it was hard to get momentum behind some of the traffic we ended up catching,” said LaMarra. “But we are happy to be where we are at, I think it is okay. I think it is very indicative of the difficulty and traffic with us getting our fastest lap on the last lap when really it should be when the tire is maximized on the third or fourth lap.”

With an even more traffic-laden field of 64 total cars between two classes for the race tomorrow, the champion team, led by Keith Burton, heads into the 2.5-hour race looking to steer clear of trouble at the beginning of the race and work up the field to be in contention at the end.

“I’m really happy with the times that both Mike (LaMarra) and Greg (Strelzoff) put up,” said Burton. “I think it’s a great spot to be in. Tomorrow we need to just have a nice and clean start to the race and then have a good pit stop before we turn the cars over to Terry (Borcheller) and Connor (Bloum).”

The new Burton duo of Greg Strelzoff and Connor Bloum in the No. 22 machine are especially excited for the season opener tomorrow. The pair hit the ground running for the busy week, posting a quick 2:06.738-seconds in their very first practice session on Wednesday, and remaining consistent from there while working on becoming more comfortable in the car.

“13th is a good position so we are very happy about that,” said Strelzoff of his qualifying effort. “We have had great support from the team, so I’m just really excited for the race tomorrow. I want to continue to work on my performance and ability to maximize all the car can do and work with my teammate, Connor (Bloum) to drive to the front of the pack.”

The team knows that every lap is important, and every race is key so the goal will be to kick off the season with a strong finish for both cars as the team looks to make a first step forward towards another successful year.

Make sure to tune in to Fox Sports 2 at 6:00 PM ET as IMSA brings same-day coverage for the Daytona round.

Daytona Beach, Fla. (23 January 2014) – The 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona will be a race for the history books, and for Riley Technologies, it could well be a race for the record books as the firm pursues a tenth consecutive overall victory.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona marks the first-ever race staged by the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship following the off-season merger of the American Le Mans Series and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series. There are four classes set to take to the high banks this Saturday (Fox will air the opening two hours live starting at 2:00 PM ET), and the Mooresville, North Carolina-based firm has products competing in three of the four classes in the classic endurance challenge.

Riley Technologies first debuted its Daytona Prototype design at the 2004 Rolex 24 At Daytona, setting the stage for what was to come as the all-new machine locked out the front row in qualifying. In 2005, the Riley Motorsports-run Suntrust Racing team scored an overall victory after 710 laps of the 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway.

Since that first champagne-soaked slow roll into Daytona’s victory lane in 2005, Riley Technologies has won the event overall every year.

This remarkable performance has been consistent even through three different generations of Daytona Prototype regulations, as the DP from the Bob Riley-led design team has amassed 92 victories and ten consecutive Manufacturer Championships. The 2014 race will see a fourth iteration of regulations for the Daytona Prototypes that should produce even more speed.

Six entries from five teams (Chip Ganassi Racing, Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian, GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racings, Starworks Motorsport, and Highway to Help) will all utilize Riley Technologies design in their pursuit of the Rolex pyramid trophy. With a strong stable of familiar and well-prepared customer teams, Riley could once again take the top spot on Sunday afternoon.

But all the attention won’t just be on the top of the scoring pylon for Riley Technologies, as the firm also serves as a partner with SRT Motorsports, and will do battle in the top GT Class (“GTLM”) with the impressive SRT Viper GTS-R. The 2014 Rolex marks the first chapter in a titanic GTLM battle that will wage from Daytona to Long Beach to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The No. 91 SRT Motorsports Viper GTS-R will be shared by Domink Farnbacher, Marc Goossens, and Ryan Hunter-Reay, while the No. 93 SRT Motorsports Viper GTS-R will see Robert Bell, Jonathan Bomarito, and Kuno Wittmer serve as co-drivers as the factory effort continues to impress. Since making a debut late in the 2012 season, the SRT Motorsports effort broke through for a victory in 2013 and continues to gather momentum in the highly contested class.

The 2014 edition of the 24 will also mark the competition debut for the all-new Riley Technologies SRT Viper GT3-R. The machine will compete in the GT Daytona (“GTD”) class, which boasts 29 entries for the 2014 IMSA opener.

As has often been the case with Riley Technologies designs, the all new GT3-R has attracted international interest, and the driving line up reflects that as the No. 33 Viper Exchange-liveried SRT Viper GT3-R will be co-driven by Ben Keating (US), Jeroen Bleekmolen (Monaco), Sebastiaan Bleekmolen (Netherlands), and Emmanuel Collard (France), who was part of the driving line up that took the 2005 overall victory with Suntrust.

“The Rolex 24 is always an exciting event, but with a new championship and so much on the line, this is unlike any 24 I can ever remember and it should be great for the fans,” said Riley Technologies Vice-President Bill Riley. “For us as a company, it is a really big weekend and is the result of a lot of planning and hard work from everyone. I think it reflects on the depth of talent at Riley Technologies that we have designs that are competitive in three completely different classes. As always, our customer teams are key to our success and we will be doing everything we can to support them this weekend and all year long. Hopefully we can start the new IMSA era with a very big weekend here at Daytona.”

Practice and qualifying will open the weekend on Thursday, with Saturday’s 2:10 PM ET Green Flag being carried by Fox Channel as well as MRN Radio. Additional updates will be available via www.imsa.comwww.rileytechno.com and www.twitter.com/rileytechno.

Burton Racing Partners with Gold Eagle, makers of STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer and BMW Automotive Chemicals for 2014 IMSA Campaign

*2013 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge Team and Driver Champions
*Returning partnerships with Automotive Chemicals BMW Group and Excelda, as new relationship with Gold Eagle STA-BIL brand opens 2014
*Opening race on Friday, January 24 (same-day Fox Sports 2 broadcast starting at 6:00 PM ET)

Indianapolis, Ind. (21 January 2014)- Burton Racing will return to IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge competition in 2014, and the two-car team will look to stage a successful championship defense with the support of two key partnerships.

2014 Driver Champions Mike LaMarra and Terry Borcheller will once again team in the No. 23 BMW Automotive Chemicals/Excelda Manufacturing BMW 128i, as the successful business to business engagement between BMW Automotive Chemicals and Excelda Manufacturing continues to generate positive results.

“We are proud to continue our program with the BMW Automotive Chemicals and Excelda because it is a great case study of how business to business partnerships can work in motorsports,” said team owner Keith Burton. “There is real value to how those companies work with each other and it is gratifying that Burton Racing plays an important role in that process.”

The sister No. 22 BMW 128i is sporting a new and promising driver line up for 2014, as Greg Strelzoff and Connor Bloum join the squad after scoring ST class podiums together for BMW in 2013. The duo will carry branding from the Gold Eagle STA-BIL line of products. STA-BIL is familiar to many, as the product has emerged as America’s top selling fuel stabilizer.

With a new partner in STA-BIL, the two will look to build on their strong start together in the Roar test earlier this month as the duo aim to return to the IMSA podium on a regular basis in 2014.

“There is a great fit between IMSA fans and the STA-BIL line of products,” said Burton. “It has so many applications—almost everything that has an engine can benefit. There are a lot of enthusiasts that are aware of STA-BIL because they are already customers, and we are looking forward to helping Gold Eagle and the STA-BIL brand continue to grow in the marketplace with this partnership.”

The opening round of the 12-race championship will take place at Daytona International Speedway as part of the big season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona event.

Top-Five Finish for Alberico in First of Three TRS Races at Timaru

For

Immediate Release:

Top-Five Finish for Alberico in First of Three TRS Races at Timaru

Timaru, New Zealand (January 18, 2014) – Team USA Scholarship driver Neil Alberico began his second weekend of Toyota Racing Series action with a flourish by finishing fifth in Race One at the Timaru International Motor Raceway on New Zealand’s South Island.

Alberico, 21, from Los Gatos, Calif., had qualified sixth in the first of two 15-minute sessions which determined the grids for both Race 1 and the weekend’s feature race for the Timaru Herald Trophy. The opening period was red-flagged twice, but Alberico managed to turn a representative lap in his Victory Motor Racing Team entry to secure a starting position on the outside of row three in the extremely competitive 23-car field. The top 20 cars were all blanketed by less than one second.

His good fortune continued when he narrowly escaped a huge pileup moments after the start. The incident was triggered by a lunge to the inside by seventh-place qualifier Matteo Ferrer, from Switzerland, who succeeded only in collecting fifth-place starter Macauley Jones, from Australia. Several others also were involved when the disabled cars of Ferrer and Jones careened into the path of the main pack.

Following a red flag and lengthy delay, the race was restarted in the original grid order, albeit in single-file formation and minus six cars which were beyond immediate repair. Alberico took full advantage by settling into fifth behind New Zealander James Munro, Dutchman Steijn Schothorst, Russian Egor Orudzhev and his local teammate Damon Leitch.

Munro, the reigning New Zealand Formula Ford champion, stretched his lead to score his maiden TRS win ahead of Schothorst and Orudzhev. Alberico put Leitch under some pressure in the middle portion of the 15-lap race before settling into fifth, well clear of Damon Leitch’s older brother, Brendon, and Estonian Martin Rump who led the points table following the first three races at Teretonga Park last week.

“With the single file restart there was a bit of dicing up front between the five of us at first, then we slowly separated ourselves from the rest of the field as the race progressed,” said Alberico. “It’s tough to pass here without heavy risk.

“Great job today by the Victory Motor Racing boys. They have worked very hard this past week to make vast improvements and they deserve this top-five finish.”

Alberico will start fourth for Race 2, which starts at 11:00 am local time on Sunday (plus 18 hours from the U.S. East Coast), and 14th for the 20-lap Timaru Herald Trophy feature race at 3:00 pm. Live timing and scoring will be available at http://www.nzracechamps.org.nz/pages/67/live-timing.htm.

Alberico Begins Toyota Racing Series Challenge at Teretonga

For Immediate Release:

Alberico Begins Toyota Racing Series Challenge at Teretonga

Invercargill, New Zealand (January 10, 2014) – After a shakedown and two rain-interrupted days of testing, Team USA Scholarship winner Neil Alberico will begin his Toyota Racing Series season in earnest on Saturday at the world’s most southerly permanent race track, Teretonga Park in Invercargill, New Zealand.

The series, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, has attracted an extremely strong field of 23 drivers – literally from around the world. Twelve different nations will be represented, including Australia, Brazil, Malaysia, Russia, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the United States. Contenders will include Pedro Piquet, the 15-year-old youngest son of former three-time F1 world champion Nelson Piquet, European Formula Renault 2.0 campaigners Egor Orudzhev (Russia) and Ryan Tveter (USA), as well as series veterans Englishman Jann Mardenborough, a product of the Nissan GT Academy, Dutchman Steijn Schothorst and favored local driver Damon Leitch.

Alberico, 21, from Los Gatos, Calif., has endured some challenges in becoming accustomed to the TRS car, especially since his team, Victory Motor Racing, is working with new engineers this season. The weather so far has been uncooperative, too, with cool conditions during the Southern Hemisphere summer and persistent showers leading to a multitude of red-flag interruptions.

Alberico, who finished second in the 2013 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, recording a series-high six race wins, has been running on old tires thus far. The team struggled initially to find a good balance for the car, which features a mono-shock suspension system, but Alberico has made good progress, especially in collaboration with veteran Kiwis Dave McMillan and Chris Schofield, who have worked extensively in North America.

“The team has worked very hard over the past few days to get the car where it’s at,” said Alberico, who posted the seventh fastest time in yesterday’s final practice session. “We still have some work to do, however I believe we are in good shape going into qualifying for tomorrow. The weather looks to be mostly dry in the morning, so it looks like we will get our first proper run on new tires. I think we have good pace in the wet as well. All the pieces of the puzzle are there, now we just have to put them all together.”

Qualifying will take place on Saturday morning at 11:00 local time (plus 18 hours from the U.S. East Coast), followed by the first of three 15-lap races at 3:00 pm. Races Two and Three will follow on Sunday. Live timing and scoring will bee available at http://www.toyotaracing.co.nz/calendar-results/live-timing/.

CORVETTE DPs AT DAYTONA: ’Roar’ Out of the Gates for 2014

CORVETTE DPs AT DAYTONA: ’Roar’ Out of the Gates for 2014
Start of TUDOR Championship sees strong contingent of Corvette Daytona Prototypes prep for Rolex 24

DETROIT (Dec. 31, 2013) – Chevrolet is ready for a landmark season of sports car racing in North America with a strong complement of Corvette Daytona Prototypes that will compete in the inaugural year of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship. Six Corvette DPs are set to compete this season at some of the continent’s top road courses starting with the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 25-26.

Prior to that however, Corvette DP teams will take part in the annual Roar Before the 24 three-day test at Daytona International Speedway from Jan. 3-5.

The sports car landscape has changed significantly since Wayne Taylor Racing’s Jordan Taylor and Max Angelelli won in September at Lime Rock Park to clinch the Rolex Series’ DP driver’s championship. The Rolex Series and American Le Mans Series officially merged with DPs in the new top-level prototype class. In order to balance the cars in the prototype category, the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has made a number of technical adjustments to Daytona Prototype cars including new aerodynamics and brake systems, and additional horsepower from 2013.

“This is one of the most highly anticipated and exciting starts to a season of sports car racing in many years,” said Mark Kent, Director of Chevrolet Racing. “We are looking forward to another year of close racing in the prototype class as our strong lineup of teams compete to defend Chevrolet’s Manufacturers Championship.”

Six Daytona Prototype entries from five teams will take to Daytona International Speedway for this week’s three-day test: Wayne Taylor Racing, Action Express Racing (with two Corvette DPs), GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing and newcomer Marsh Racing – stepping up from running a GT Corvette to the Corvette DP.

Those efforts will lead Chevrolet’s fight for additional victories and championships in the top level of North American sports car racing. Chevrolet ended Rolex Series competition with 20 Daytona Prototype victories – 16 by Corvette DPs since it debuted in 2011 – and nine in GT. The Bowtie brand also captured DP engine manufacturer championships in both 2012 and 2013, plus the 2011 GT title.

“There are been a huge amount of work and cooperation between our teams, IMSA and our technical partners in advance of this season,” said Jim Lutz, Chevrolet TUDOR Championship Daytona Prototype Program Manager. “Headed into the Roar Before the 24, we feel like our DP teams are good positions to make their final preparations for the start of the season. As always, Daytona International Speedway presents a significant challenge given the track’s banking and high speeds. Given the new technical regulations and adjustments for 2014, reliability will take on added importance. That will be a key focal point for this year’s Roar.”
