Millville, N.J. (12 May 2012) – After Compass360 Racing co-driver Andrew Novich notched a season-best qualifying result of sixth, his co-driver Adam Burrows was hoping that the strong qualifying result would translate to the best finish of the season for the driving duo.

Those ambitions were further fueled as Novich made a great start to the B+ Heroes NJMP 200, moving up to fight for a podium position in the early laps of the race. Unfortunately, the day came to a sudden and screeching halt as a dispute over third place at the entrance of high speed turn one saw Novich spinning and careening into the tire barriers after contact with a broad shouldered competitor.

Fortunately, the well-built Compass360 machine saw young Novich emerge unscathed, but the damage was done and the two will have to look ahead to Round 5 at Mid-Ohio for another bite at the apple.

“That was a big hit that Andrew took, so a huge thanks to the job the Compass guys do building these cars,” said Burrows. “It was a very good weekend for us, right up to that moment. I can’t say enough about the job Andrew has been doing this season. His maturity in approach has led to more speed and consistency at each race. The absolutely stellar job he did in qualifying is a perfect example of how his preparation has paid off. No question that today was a heartbreak, but there are a lot of positives to be taken with us to Mid-Ohio.”

Marsal and Said Score Best Finish of the Year

Run to 4th in New Jersey moves duo up to top ten in points

Millville, N.J. (12 May 2012) – Michael Marsal and Turner Motorsport co-driver Boris Said drove the No. 97 BMW M3 to a fourth place finish in the B+ Heroes 200 presented by BCKSTGR at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Round 4 of the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge championship. The fourth place effort netted the Turner duo their best finish of the year after having already scored two top-10 results at Daytona and Homestead.

As Marsal looked for a return to the podium at his home track, he was set to move forward early in the 2.5-hour race and made quick work of it by picking up two positions on the first lap to run 12th prior to the first full course caution period.

When the race returned to green flag action, Marsal began a charge to the front to run as high as seventh before pitting during the second race caution to hand the car over to Said.

Said returned to the track 18th in the order but wasted no time returning to the front of the field as he improved 11 positions within five laps. Said continued to run among the top-five until a late-race full course yellow set up a three-lap sprint to the finish.

Using all his skills and decades of experience, Said moved to the outside in a slick maneuver to move the No. 97 machine up to fourth in Turn 1 on the restart, contending for a podium finish all the way to the final stages of the race.

“Fourth place feels good – I think I ran a great race and I think Boris (Said) did too,” said Marsal, whose mother made the three hour drive to be in attendance for Marsal’s Mother’s Day race weekend event. “I think we did exactly what we were supposed to do. Obviously we didn’t have the car to win – the Subaru is way faster than us. Everybody else just kind of checked out which seems to be a common theme here. There’s not really a lot of passing at the end. Everybody kind of stretches out and holds their ground. I’ve always performed well at New Jersey but I’m not really sure why – I guess it just suits me. It’s fun, it’s a patience track and it’s a technical track. It was good to be in a position for a podium there at the end and I’m happy with fourth.”

In addition to his compact Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race schedule which saw a morning practice, qualifying, and the 2.5-hour race all in one day, Marsal doubled up on the day as he also took part in the ITC series driving for Auto Technic in a 40-minute race held prior to the start of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event.

That race would see him run at the front of the field as he raced ahead of his Turner Motorsport team owner Will Turner. But the day ended early as a car spun in Marsals path and he had no option but to make race-ending contact with the spinning machine.

The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge next travels to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Round 5 of the championship June 8-9.

“I’m really looking forward to Mid-Ohio,” said Marsal. “It’s probably my favorite track to go racing. It’s not the greatest track for pure driving but for some reason it just makes for some great dog fights. People are making passes for positions all throughout the race and it’s really just a track where you’re always working and driving and it’s a ton of fun.”

The B+ Heroes 200 presented by BCKSTGR will broadcast May 26 at 2:00 PM (ET) on SPEED.

Millville, N.J. (12 May 2012) – Michael Marsal turned his fastest lap of the weekend to put the No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 14th on the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge grid for the B+ Heroes 200 presented by BCKSTGR at New Jersey Motorsports Park.

With a quick time of 1:30.739-seconds around the 2.25-mile track, the effort earned Marsal his best starting position of the year, and he will grid for the 2.5-hour race from the seventh row as he and co-driver Boris Said look to move forward at Marsal’s home track located just a couple of hours south of where he resides in New York City.

“Qualifying was good – it’s the best start I’ve had this year so I’m happy about that,” said Marsal of the qualifying run. “We made a set-up change and it was the wrong way to go but we’re going to put it back and I think it should be good for the race. I burned off the tires in traffic and then by the time I got a clean lap it was only good enough for 14th. I perform well at this track and I’m happy to be starting in the top-15. I’m looking forward to working my way through the field.”

Prior to the start of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race, Marsal will have little time to spare as he competes in another race, driving a different BMW. Marsal has joined Auto Technic in the ITC series in a 40-minute race which will see him go up against Turner Motorsport team owner Will Turner. The run in a BMW will add to his BMW Trophy points count as the young racer continues to add more lines to his racing resume.

The B+ Heroes 200 presented by BCKSTGR will begin at 3:15 PM (ET). Live timing and scoring can be followed at www.grand-am.com.

Millville, N.J. (9 May 2012) – Between exams, post-graduation plans, and a full racing calendar, Michael Marsal is a young guy on the move. Fortunately for him, when he returns to race action this weekend, he will not have far to travel as the New York City resident heads just a couple of hours south to New Jersey Motorsports Park as the GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series stages Round 4 of the 2012 Championship – the B+ Heroes 200 presented by BCKSTGR.

Marsal will once again team with Boris Said in the No. 97 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 as he looks for a return to the New Jersey podium, having netted a run to third place in his 2010 debut at the New Jersey road course with co-driver Joey Hand.

Last year’s NJMP race weekend saw Marsal pull double race duty as he scored a 10th place finish in Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge with Turner co-driver Sam Schultz as well as take a career-best GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series result of 10th while driving the No. 93 Turner Motorsport Rolex Sports Car Series GT entry in the American Red Cross 250.

Marsal rebounded from getting spun into a massive crash in Round 2 of the 2012 championship at Barber Motorsports Park to score another top-10 result in the most recent round at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Despite having to start at the rear of the GS field due to a drive train issue, he and Said drove to a seventh place finish in a race that saw a mix of wet and dry conditions.

“I’m looking forward to returning to New Jersey especially since it’s not all that far from home,” said Marsal, who will graduate from nearby LaSalle University with a degree in Marketing next weekend. “Turner Motorsport is typically pretty strong at New Jersey and I’ve had a couple of good results there, so I’m excited to see what we can do. Boris (Said) and I have really been working well together this year and I think we can add another good result this weekend. Racing so close to home means there will be some extra friends and family on hand as well, so I’m just looking forward to the weekend getting going.”

The event opens on Thursday with a promoter test day followed by official practice on Friday. Saturday will see a busy morning of practice and qualifying prior to the 3:15 PM (ET) start of the 2.5-hour race.

Live timing and scoring can be followed at www.grand-am.com. SPEED will broadcast the event on May 26 at 2:00 PM (ET).

Wampum, PA (7 May 2012) – Walldinger Racing karter Kyle Kirkwood has three more trophies to add to his collection following another successful outing in Round 3 of the WKA Manufacturers Cup Series at Pittsburgh International Race Complex. The Shell-sponsored racer netted three podium finishes as he competed in multiple classes through the intense two-day race weekend.

It was a busy weekend for the Florida youngster. On Saturday, Kirkwood contested the Komet Junior Heavy and Yamaha Junior. Lite divisions before moving to race in the Komet Junior Lite and Yamaha Junior Heavy classes on Sunday.

Starting in Komet Jr. Heavy, Kirkwood qualified his No. 29 Arrow sixth among 35 karts to start the Pre-Final from the outside of Row 3.

As the field approached the green, the flagman waved off two attempts at a start and per WKA rules, each wave-off is scored as a green flag lap so the eight lap Pre-Final would only see six green flag laps.

With so many karters looking to get to the front early, Kirkwood got shuffled back to 10th position on the start, but made up one spot to take ninth at the finish in the short sprint. A fifth row start for the final saw Kirkwood move up at the start, jumping to sixth in the opening laps before moving up to finish fourth in the 13-lap Final to score his first podium of the weekend.

Jumping from kart to kart, Kirkwood shifted to the Yamaha Jr. Lite class, which featured one of the biggest fields of the weekend with 43 entries as he qualified the No. 29 Arrow sixth on the grid for the Pre-Final.

At the start of the Pre-Final, Kirkwood was forced off-track when several karts got together ahead of him on Lap 1, but he quickly gathered it back up and returned to the track 11th. He made quick work of moving back up the order to finish sixth. Kirkwood followed up that effort with a great run in the Final – moving into the fifth position and staging a race-long battle for fourth, ultimately taking fifth at the finish.

Sunday saw Kirkwood once again in dual-class action, campaigning the Komet Jr. Lite and Yamaha Junior Heavy classes.

The 13-year-old karter lined up 15th of 42 karts for Komet Jr. Lite and with the start of the Pre-Final waved off three times, the class would only have five laps of green flag racing. Kirkwood used the limited amount of laps wisely and worked his way up to 13th. Unfortunately, the forward movement would come to an early end in the Final when Kirkwood was caught up in a Lap 1 pile-up in Turn 3 leaving him to watch the race from off-track.

One final class for the weekend–Yamaha Jr. Heavy–brought promise as Kirkwood rebounded with a solid run in the Yamaha Jr. Heavy Final.

Starting from inside the second row, Kirkwood immediately slotted into second at the start and took over the lead by the end of Lap 1. In a tight battle for first, he would fall to second on Lap 2 but remained glued to the bumper of the first place kart throughout the entire 13-lap event to bring home his third podium result of the weekend in only his second WKA National appearance.

“Overall it was a good weekend,” said Kirkwood, who appeared with Allmendinger for media availability last weekend at the NASCAR Sprint Cup event at Richmond. “I obviously wasn’t happy with the outcome of the race in Komet Jr. Lite, but the rest of the weekend was good and I’m happy with second in Yamaha. I’ve improved a lot since the last time I raced here (at Pittsburgh International Race Complex) so I’m also really happy about that. I’ve got experience at South Bend, and I think the Arrow chassis will be good there, so I’m looking forward to it.”

The WKA Manufacturers Cup Series next heads to South Bend, Indiana for the MKP Nationals at Michiana Raceway Park July 6-8.

Wampum, PA (3 May 2012) – Walldinger Racing driver Kyle Kirkwood will be back in race action this weekend as the WKA Manufacturer’s Cup Series heads to Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, Pennsylvania for the CRG America Nationals.

Kirkwood, the recipient of the Shell-sponsored AJ Allmendinger Karting Scholarship, will look to follow-up his stellar WKA Manufacturer’s Cup debut performance at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina. Driving the No. 29 Arrow, he claimed victory in the Komet Jr. Heavy division and finished runner-up in the Yamaha Jr. Heavy class.

He also picked up top-10 finishes in Yamaha Jr. Lite and Komet Jr. Lite. Kirkwood will look to add to his winning-ways with a few more trips to the podium at the .82-mile, 17 turn Pennsylvania kart track.

In addition to his karting endeavors, Kirkwood traveled to Richmond International Raceway last weekend as he joined Allmendinger for an exciting announcement that Shell-Pennzoil, the primary sponsor of Allmendinger’s No. 22 Penske Racing Dodge, has also become a primary partner in the Allmendinger scholarship. Kirkwood was thrust on to the big stage as he met the press alongside Allmendinger during the NASCAR weekend. But he handled the spotlight with aplomb and is now looking forward to making some new headlines of his own this weekend.

In addition to his media exposure, Kirkwood spent time getting an up close view of the weekend’s NASCAR activities as a guest of Allmendinger.
The 13-year-old karter will remain busy this weekend as he again contests four classes throughout the weekend: Komet Jr. Heavy, Yamaha Jr. Lite, Komet Jr. Lite, and Yamaha Jr. Heavy.

“I’m excited to be back at the kart track this weekend,” said Kirkwood. “I’ve raced at Pittsburgh International Race Complex before so I’m already familiar with the track and I can’t wait to get going. These classes are very competitive but working with Tim Pappas and KartSport has been great and hopefully we will have a strong kart this weekend.”

The event kicks off with official practice on Friday from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Kirkwood will race Komet Jr. Heavy and Yamaha Jr. Lite on Saturday followed by Komet Jr. Lite and Yamaha Jr. Heavy on Sunday.

Each race day will see a format of morning practice followed by qualifying, a Pre-Final and Final.

Homestead, FL (29 April 2012) –For the second consecutive race, Adam Burrows brought Compass360 Racing a top ten finish as he teamed with Andrew Novich for a run to tenth in the No. 74 Dr. Kimberly Henry / Speed Secrets Honda Civic Si entry.

Novich opened the race from 23rd on the ST class grid, and worked his way forward during the opening half of the 2.5 hour race. That forward progress saw the No. 74 climb as high as second on the scoring pylon before he pitted to turn the controls over to Burrows. The exchange was a clean one, but as the field cycled through their respective pit stops, it left the former series champ deep in the field.

A final stop saw Burrows rejoin the field 21st in the order, good to go to the finish on fuel. As the field fought through three restarts in the last 30 laps of the race, he once again made the most of every opportunity to work his way up through the 66-car field to take a 10th place finish, matching the No. 74’s result in the previous race at Barber Motorsports Park.

“Track position is just so key with a field that is this large, and with cars that are so competitive, it is really hard to make that up,” said Burrows. “You had to fight for everything you could get out there. We were hoping for a better result but it was still a very positive weekend. Andrew continued his stellar work this season and had a perfect first stint. Ray (Lee-C360R Technical Director) had all the sums figured perfectly and the Honda Civics once again performed flawlessly this weekend. I thank we can look forward to building on this at New Jersey and hopefully picking up some momentum in the points.”

Burrows will be back in action May 11-13 close to home as the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge travels to New Jersey Motorsports Park for round four of the 2012 season.
